On "My Car Story" we're in Geneva IL at The Geneva Concours d’Elegance on 8-22-21.
We're looking at a 1935 Packard 1207 Club Sedan in Alhambra Tan Paint. This car has the factory V12 engine.
The car's Owner is John McNabola. John’s had the car since 2011. John shares he knew the previous Care Taker, and he wanted this car to go to John who would be a good home who appreciates the car. The V12 engine is incredibly smooth and quite when and after this car started.

It was just a few short years later that Packard was consigned to build British Merlin engines for aircraft. Packard did so well shipping the engines that other aircraft adopted the Merlin engine into their airframes, turning the tide of the air war in Europe.

I had to imagine what it was like to take delivery of this car when it was brand new in 1935. All I can say is, I bet the original owners chauffer was very happy when he got to work the next morning!

The quality of the instruments and the internal fittings is just incredible . Senior Packards appear to have been built using only the very best of components that were available at the time - quite regardless of cost . I appreciate that so many survive to show us just how impressive they really were . Some of the technology may be out of date but it still works beautifully . The attention to detail and imposing appearance still command respect. Packards are special .

Sitting here watching on my tv while texting this from my phone, when the engine cranked up I didn't even hear it because it was so smooth and quiet. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this automobile is beautiful!!! This is such a stately and grand automobile from a golden age and it makes quite the presence. People have described this vehicle as rolling art and I totally agree, just look at the curves of the fenders, streamlined head lamps, and the grill alone is a piece of sculpture!!! The Packard name has always evoked luxury and quality and this automobile is a fine example of just that!!! Very, Very fine automobile Lou!!!

Lou my friend and you may not believe this but I was in the Minneapolis Minnesota area and managed to get up to Rogers Minnesota where the home of Ellingson motors is. Classic car dealer and museum. I was looking at a couple of other vehicles there but in the inventory on display was this very Packer game. Of which I was able to inspect and sit in. An awesome vehicle sitting in the back I felt as though I had been coronated. Certainly a vehicle fit for a king and queen. Awesome story my friend. I am sure you have been there before. What a wonderful place and awesome experience for me today.

The lines on this are just superb. There's really little more to do than stand and admire it. And then you experience (if you're lucky enough) the smoothness of that 12. I think the Pierce edged it in power, but it was pretty remarkable and a worthy competitor to the Cad V16. They didn't remark on the radio, which was of course optional - many cars, even in this class, had a blanking plate in 1935.

30's Packards are just peak American luxury cars...so refined, stylish, and regal. My 2 fav body styles are 2 door hardtops and close coupled 4 door sedans, esp when equipped with a prestigious and powerful engine, like this '35. Man is this breathtaking...such an unusual color too. a knockout. John is a lucky man.

....oooh, la, la...John is obviously quietly proud of his amazing '37 Series 12 Club Sedan...in a rather unfortunate muddy color called Havana Beige... ...but..." the car is the star"...and this one is a dazzler, for sure... ...that trunk setup was very common un premium British cars of the time, including Rolls, Bentley, Jaguar, Humber, Daimler, etc....each having a separate compartment for the spare... ...that absolutely massive 12 cylinder always amazes me...abd per the comments at the time...you could put a quarter atop the flathead , drive 50 miles, and the quarter wouldn't have moved... ...and, I don't know what John was thinkig, but this impressive set of foot pedals is flanked by the kick-down switch which would act to down-shift for additional pull when passing or on a steep incline... ...the fact that he has the back seat all provisioned for his beloved pooch speaks volumes as to John's character... ...king may he, his co-oilot, Sunshine ( a nice Wheaton Terrier or "Wheatie") and this exceptional '37 Series 12 Club Sedan roll... ...nice one, as always, Lou... P.S....this is the very first time that I understood the round conical appurtenances on ends of the bumper as "harmonic balancers" to reduce cowl shake...wow...who knew?? ...and I know you really enjoyed that dual trumpet horn...

Lou, Here is a little history for ya. If you know this already please forgive me. Packard and Lincoln were only two of the car stampers with V12 engines. But there were only two companies total that came out with 16 cylinder power plants... Marmon and Cadillac. Using aircraft designs, Marmon perfected V16s first, and Cadillac quickly followed and put theirs on the market before Marmon could. It was 1930 and the entire world was on the threshold of financial implosion. Marmon made very few of their stunning custom built "Sixteen" limousines at a price that today would be $170,000.00. The Depression forced them into bankruptcy in 1933. GM's flagship Cadillac would make V16s until 1938. They were like 495 cubic inches and ran smooth as a modern car at 90 mph

I knew Jim Simmons! I also sat in his at time his car which was that car! We met at Denver Masonic lodge #5, he was the tiler He sold me a 1974 Cadillac with 29,k miles special ordered by a Denver millionaire in 2002 . Exclaiming no one wants it! We joked About both car had 472 ci engines. I was told the packard sold for over 150,k? The caddy I bought for 750$. Here is a big shoutout for Jim!

Another great video Lou my grandpa had a 1937 Packard he bought used in 1943 and had it until sometime in the late 1950s. It had a V12 also my grandpa's was black I still have the hubcaps off of it. Not sure what happened to the car though.

Packard was licensed by rolls royce during WW2 to produce 55,000 V12 merlin engines for the british spitfire and the usa P51 mustang fighter aircraft producing 1380 hp with one stage and two stage super chargers.

I knew Jim Simmons . I sat in this car! The acorns on the ends of the bumper are shimmy dampers, filled with lead. The motor has matted finished painting. The car has no heater ,but the back of the front seat has a blanket rail. Jim had to get the starter motor rewound ,but it was the original one. Jim bought this car because he was born in 1935. It was at a garage station at 19 ave. And Josephine st. In Denver for 50 dollars! Or it was 500 dollars can’t remember which. As he said !” Nobody wanted it. In the 50s. I also bought a car from Jim’s collection. One in 2002 nobody wanted.a 74 Cadillac With 29,986 miles on it. A special order one with a label in the dash of the man whom ordered it. Maybe one day both cars can be reunited.? In memory of Jim!

Great video and a fantastic car! The owner should do a little more research on the terminology before making incorrect statements. The hood ornament was called: 'Goddess Pushing The Wheel', not 'Boy at the wheel'. Also, the extended wheelbase cars length was also toward the rear for extra room in the rear passenger compartment. How rare to see a vehicle of this caliber from this era. This country was in the very bottom of the depression and even if you had the money for a car like this, it was a very unpopular purchase. You wanted to lay low and not draw attention to yourself.

cars like duesenberg, cadillac, packard, cord, buick, lincoln, chrysler, auburn, ford, marmon, stutz, graham and pierce arrow and the other ones are the start of an wunderfull automobile history. if you stood in front of a v16 cadillac in 1930 what would you have said if someone told you what was coming in 1955, 57, 59 ???

Lou, long time subscriber here. Thanks for bringing us this beautiful Packard. Love you--love your videos! For some reason I'm compelled to bother you with something, if you have some free time to ponder. As follows: I'm wondering if using the term "Suicide Doors" has saved lives, as a result of those unfamiliar with them questioning the term? While a much more pleasant-sounding term is "Rear Hinged Doors", I suppose one saying that reference bypasses any forewarning to not open the doors when the car is underway. I'm thinking use of the suicide term might make a difference, as people that own cars with this door style could be inclined to forget in warning people not to open the doors when the car is underway. Another question that comes to mind is if people actually pay attention to that term, truly making a connection, or if they even have an understanding of why this style of door is so dangerous? Most vintage cars are owned and driven by men. Do most guys really know that the danger usually happens when someone realized a door isn't fully closed, and they usually have a knee-jerk reaction to open it and slam it shut? Do they know in doing that at speed, a strong wind will bang the door open with the force of a tornado? And that at the same moment, muscle memory will make someone's hand grab the door handle tightly to close the door, and the person is ejected out of the car? It all happens fast. Very, very fast. The subject becomes unpleasant to think about, horrifying if thinking of a loved one. And it seems like a problem of years and years ago, except these very same cars are still around and in use today. Understand, I hate the nanny brigade, but in all my years being a car-guy, along with those same years in perusing automotive catalogs, it seems somewhat strange that I've never seen labels available that state to the effect "Extremely High Risk If Door Is Opened While Underway." As well, this matter is yet another reason to install seat belts all-around in a vintage car.

Hi discerningmind, Thanks for being a long time Subscriber. My pleasure sharing this car with you. My opinion is the "suicide door" makes people stay away from them nicely seated in the center of the car. Seat belts seems to be the safety answer, and air bag too. Lou

It is a good looking car. I wonder if Packard was a brand similar to what Lucid is now. All extravagant but not much staying power during a period when cars were trying to be some great technology things. Lucid Air is gorgeous but not sure company will survive similar to Packard.

Did this belong to Burt Mills at one time? He documents his ownership of a car that seems identical to this in his book, Adventures in Restoring Antique Cars, written in the 1970's.

The only stupid question is the one that you do not ask. I thought that the foot rest to the right of the gas pedal was a starter button, but it was foot rest. I've seen a foot rest for the clutch pedal in cars before, but not the gas pedal. GREAT QUESTION Lou!!! Always ask a question, no matter how silly it may seem to do so. There are those that may laugh at your question, but you are the one that will have gained knowledge and those of us watching You will do so also. It's hard to believe that Packard stayed in business after the stock market crash of 1929 and stayed in business until 1956. Packard built High-End Cars. How many people had the money to buy such a car back then? Atwater Kent built High-End Radios, and the factory closed in 1936. This car has a Flat Head Engine. A Flat Head Engine is not as efficient as an Overhead Valve Engine. That being said, Indian Motorcycles used Flathead Engines up until 1953 when they went Out of Business. Indians Blew The Doors Off of Harley - Davidson Motorcycles, even when HD switched over to Overhead Valve Engines. On Paper it makes no sense, but it's true. Many Police Departments (that had the money in their budget) ordered Indian Motorcycles. With Radio's back they used Vacuum Tubes, Five Tubes were OK for receiving Stations. If you were to add a few more Tubes to a Radio, you would then have a High-End Radio that would receive even more Radio Stations. In closing, during WW2, Packard built Rolls Royce Engines for Airplanes, Better than Rolls Royce could. When someone with a Rolls Royce Car went back to The Dealership to complain about it leaking Oil, they would be told that a quart of oil didn't really cost all that much, and to take your silly little problem elsewhere. :) American Know How! That being said, My Dad who was a Mechanical Engineer, told me in my teens: The Japanese took everything we did right, And Threw Away The Rest! Most of my stereo equipment is Japanese Designed and Made In Japan along with my Car with a Variable Valve Timing Engine with Four Valves Per Cylinder and Dual Overhead cams with Electronic fuel Injection and My Motorcycle with A Single Pin Crankshaft with Dual Overhead Camshafts and 4 Valves Per Cylinder and Carbureted. My AM Radio? A 1932/1933 Atwater Kent Model 188 made with 8 Tubes. In a couple months time, Valentine's Day will arrive. Here are Two Pianists. One an American Male and The Other a Japanese Female performing on a Yamaha CFX $200,000 Piano... WITH THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF PEDALS Lou! Order the kind of Pizza Your Wife Likes and the kind of Pizza that You like Lou, and Sit Back and Have A Wonderful Valentine's Night!!! What a car but I really think the upholstery lets the rest of the thing down somewhat. That fabric doesn't look all that special or high end and that that's the way it came says something. I'm not sure what but it says something because clearly by every other parameter this thing was screwed together in a way where time wasn't a concern. It just had to be right. All that said it couldn't be too easy to procure any more of that cloth and replicating it exactly as is would have to be a daunting to impossible endeavor. Maybe someday some future restorer (assuming that there will even BE any more of them after a certain point) will set about trying to pull it off. Once again: what a car. In many ways superior to any new car.
