Very cool project! I had a 37’ JD “A”. Never rebuilt the engine but did replace the head gasket once. I was a little surprised to find out how big the pistons were. They reminded me of Folgers coffee cans…lol

Really interesting. I just about dumped my breakfast on the floor when you said you was reusing the rings! I thought I was the only guy that does that. I rebuilt an old 8N one time and the owner didn't want to pay for new sleeves and pistons after having to grind the crank and new bearings, so I checked the rings out, still had within specs end gaps, they looked good, so like you, I honed the cylinders good and reused the old rings. When I started working on the engine, it ran, smoked a lot and was puffing clouds of blow by. When I started it up for the first time, it never smoked and never smoked any during break in. The owner used this to mow about 10 acres with a finish mower every week or so. After 10 years, it is still running good, doesn't use any oil, not hardly any blow by! I think most important thing is to get the engine up to operating temperture on the break in to seat the rings good.

There is no better sound in the world than a poppin' Johnny pulling a hay wagon. Not much in the way of horsepower but it makes up for it with torque...and character. Can't wait to see them all spiffed up.

I love these tractor videos. Your dad did a great job on that exhaust. He has an eye for the details. Love how you explain what your doing and why. So cool the specs are” tight but not binding”. That’s great. Thanks for sharing bud!! Can’t wait until next one. You have the best projects going on.

My dad bought a brand new 730 Diesel in 1959 or 60 I was 4 years old, and it was regulated as a planting tractor around 1968. In 1971or 2 we were planting beans and for sone unknown reason the crankshaft broke and after talking with the dealer he tradeded for a new 4520 rather than a rebuild, I think he regretted it I know I do. That 4520 was a dog it never did as advertised, John Deere also replaced the 4520 by upgrade to the 4620 in 1972 it was basically the same tractor but with improved engine

I didn't see you check the ring position on the piston, hopefully you don't have a couple gaps inline & loose compression

I would of taken the time to check crankshaft to rod bearing clearance with plastigage strips.

Do you have any place that will re-babbitt those rods for you? I wish I had kept our first set of babbitted rods for our 1938 G. It's just about impossible to find good babbitted rods hereabouts, but I can get old rods re-babbitted (for a small fortune, but at least I can get them) "IF" you can find good rods to work with.

You should at least soak the oil ring in diesel over night to free all that old caked on oil that has built up over decades of use...
