As you can see from this video in 3 weeks I have -
Stripped 90% of the walls and ceilings
Removed the bathroom
Sold and removed the kitchen
Stripped out most of the rooms
Removed the old skirting and coving
Had a huge team in to clear the garden (the trees near the house sadly had to go for the extension, but we've saved dozens of beautiful plant clippings to re-plant for Spring 2021)
Cut back the front garden
Taken away the lean-to
Removed the old coal storage
Removed 2 fire places
Removed 2 half brick, half wood outbuildings (that were hidden in the jungle)
Removed all of the radiators

That back garden is huge! If I were lucky enough to have that much room I'd definitely divide it up into "rooms". Near the house I'd make a small patio for a table and chairs and maybe a grill. I'd also put in a kitchen garden for herbs and vegetables. Just beyond that a lawn down the middle with flower beds on each side, this will allow for children or pets to play. Toward the back I'd create a cozy space with shade and maybe some outside seating with cover, somewhere quiet for a read or just relaxing. If I had the money, I'd put in a small summer house, which could be used for any number of purposes. If it's expensive to run power out to it, I would install a small solar panel, battery, and led lights which don't require a lot of power.

I'm also glad you saved the apple tree, it's a shame more couldn't be saved but I get it... I have about ten smallish apple trees at the house I'm renovating so trying to dig them up to replant at my own house as I hate removing plants! It's nice to see that you care and are respectful to both the house and garden and not just focussed on doing what's easiest, like many doing this. Good job!

I would make a utilityroom where the old kitchen was. Very convinient to have a door out into the garden if You would hang your laundry out to dry. Also good to have cabinets to be able to store bedlinen, tablecloths, towels etc. As You Said, You always need storage...! 🤔😉

Wow what a fab back garden.. lovely bungalow as well. Love that you are trying to keep the character. I had a separate toilet and I knocked them together and I really wish I hadn’t. It’s so convenient if someone is in the bath or shower others can still use the toilet but I can see why you want to knock them together. Keep up the great work 👍👍😁 I see someone thought you were disrespectful to the old man.. I didn’t think you were at all. You said he was lovely and all the neighbours spoke kindly and fondly of him and you are trying to retain a lot of character where most builders would just rip the whole lot out.

I understand why you had to remove almost everything in the back garden. I know it would have been impractical to work around assorted shrubs (which workmen would probably crush anyway), but it's sad to see them gone. At least you saved the apple tree! I hope you will be able to save the transom windows over the interior doors. As for the garage, even if it had been in salvageable condition it was so narrow that it would only conveniently hold motorcycles and bikes.

@@nightwindswings In the UK , where land is in short supply, and nearly every adult family member has a car, front gardens are becoming a thing of the past and, as you say, being turned into car parks. One can see this up and down Britain in urban estates like this. It's a sad loss in my view.

I am glad the neighbours shared what a lovely man who lived there was. As a retired district nurse I was mortified at the way you pulled the house apart verbally. I know how hard it is for the old people when they become frail and unable to look after their surroundings. He was from a generation who were very proud something a lot of young people don’t understand anymore. I am glad you have back peddled a bit and stated what a lovely person he was. I also hope you have learned a lesson about respect from this on reflection. I am looking forward to following the renovation now xx

I can't wait to see the design for the extension and the garage rebuild/integration into the floor plan. It's very nice to see the garden cleared, I can't believe how huge it is. I think you should remove the original Art Deco lights you're saving and pack them away safely, so they don't get damaged during the renovation. I'm glad you're taking inspiration from the house's history in your redesign and renovation, I think a good renovation always takes the era and style of the house into consideration.

Wow. You've accomplished a lot already. Garden looks massive now too. Great that you could keep the apple tree. Cant understand why anybody thought that garage was salvageable, it's far too narrow, only good for storage and just not worth all the time and money that would have cost. Bad news re asbestos. Thanks for the run through REALLY looking forward to part 3 !!! Thanks for sharing this with us. Take care.

So glad you kept the apple tree. Hard luck on the woodchip wallpaper, it's tough going. Well done on keeping the loo - I have friends who proudly smashed up theirs on a similar project and put it in the skip. The workmen then arrived and pointed out that it would have been needed - luckily the foreman lived up the road so they all used his! Bamboo grows quickly if you wanted a quick green back screen.

Garden transformation is great. And I agree with you on keeping the cupboard next to bathroom as storage. I think the garage should be kept if you are making this a 2 or 3 bedroom bungalow for resale as families will always need that extra storage and it's a separate access from the front to the back of the house.
