One of the fastest and safest cars in the world? I'll agree that it is certainly one of the most beautiful ones in the world, but.............. While the body and suspension are state of the art for the time, Mercedes left a lot on the table as far as the engine utilized in this beauty is concerned. A rather small displacement - 5 liter, 300 cu. in., conventional push rod power plant with supercharger only developed a paltry 160 HP. Without the supercharger deployed, it was just 100 HP! Compare that to the American made 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ. That was powered by a 6.9 liter, 420 cu. in. double overhead cam straight eight hemi head engine that put out 320 HP - twice the Mercedes output! The 500K was good for 100 mph - the Duesenberg was good for 130 + mph. While the Duesenberg had a significantly superior, high tech engine, it had a very conventional suspension that was put to shame by the Mercedes fully independent, coil spring set up that improved comfort and handling greatly. I wish it was feasible to put the Duesenberg engine in the Mercedes chassis and you would have the complete package! While the price of this beauty was high, at around $11,000, the Duesenberg SSJ (only two were built) was double that amount! The late actor Gary Cooper's 1935 SSJ sold at auction in 2018 for $22,000,000 - the highest price ever paid for an American car at auction.

@@EssexRecordingStudios Thanks! When living in Florida in 1975, I built a 1:8 scale kit of the 1935 Mercedes 500 K roadster by Pocher of Italy. Just over 2' long with plastic body, but metal frame and many other metal parts - 2,368 if I remember correctly! Each wire wheel had to be built up on a jig, stainless steel spokes, metal rims and hub. I had to build the seats and upholster them. The convertible top was made of fabric that had to be seamed before assembling. I'll never forget that, as it was the very last nice thing my wife did for me before we went opposite ways!

@@TurbochargedV6 - I do. That was a $275 model which was big bucks in 1975. I just purchased the ultimate diecast model car kit in 1:8 scale from a company by the name of Agora, in the U.K. It is a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C with beautiful pre painted metal body, frame, suspension components, engine and transmission. It is assembled with 28 different sizes of machine screws, no gluing. It weighs 15 lbs. when completed! It took me a bit to decide whether I would purchase it.........about 10 minutes, as it is also quite expensive. Bottom line, I love the Shelby Cobra and when I read about this 1:8 scale all metal kit with great details, I had to have it. $1,500! Agora makes several different models in large scale, including a Porsche 917KH, Mustang Super Snake, Jaguar XKE and James Bond's Aston Martin.

I admit, in the 30’s the Europeans turned out some amazing Scotia automobiles. Just look at some of the gems from France. What an era!!
