The Downtown Chicago footage was actually filmed in March, 1938. The movies on the State-Lake and Chicago marquees opened in December, 1937 in other markets (I'm assuming New York and Los Angeles); but both of the movies on the marquees didn't make it to Chicago until March, 1938.

Opening scene is at Fort Wayne, IN Union Station, used by the Pennsylvania and Wabash RRs. Station sign is visible at 00:00:47:06 top of frame. 00:01:32:10 - Scene is at Chicago Union Station, north side tracks, used by the Milwaukee Road. The train (probably on Track 17) is powered by 4-4-2 #3, built for Hiawatha service in 1935. My best guess is this is a special excursion train, judging by the way people (some with cameras) are milling around in areas you wouldn't expect folks to be in if waiting for a regular train. At 00:01:32:10 the people on the left are standing on or near the freight bypass tracks. Chuck Amstein

The burning of coal in those days dominated as a source of heat energy for homes and business buildings. Amazing how building facades became darkened because of this (Art Institute 3:35 ). Does not say much for the quality of the air. A buddy of mine who worked downtown and took the train in (Steam in the 1950s) told me his white shirt was dirty by the time he got home end of day. No air conditioning then, so you had to open the windows on the train and in came the ash from the engine!!

I agree with you. There's no respect in attire these days. The fashion trend today is super casual. The last era of sophisticated dressing was the 1980s and early 90s. But in the 1920s and 30s wow!! There was a rule to dressing. I think we stop wearing elegant hats because trend setters in the fashion industry set the standards for fashion and it's now a casual look. A young guy will pay $3000 for a pair of Nike Air Jordans and can resell them used for $4000. Young guys fashion start at their feet and not from the head down. But they are wearing hats; baseball caps ...lol..lol,.. oh and busted jeans ripped with holes. That's today's fashion. Awful!!!

Looking lousy is demoralizing and depressing. Ugly, sloppy, and fast fashion are subtle ways to gain control over people. If you look like a trillion bucks, you’ll feel like a trillion bucks. When you feel like a trillion bucks, you start to see you have self worth, with individualistic opinions etc. and you’ll be less inclined to submit to the dictates of those in power.

Yes, respectability in the manner of dressing while in public. Especially downtown, has fallen in the wayside.

Dear PeriscopeFilm: This footage is excellent! Is there any possibility of colorization of this black and white film?
@PeriscopeFilm3 жыл бұрын
It's a nice thought but we don't colorize material -- that's not historic preservation.
