Gruhn Season 3 Continues! In this brand new episode, George describes four (4) highly sought after & important models made by the iconic Martin Guitar Co.: 1) a 1912 Martin 00028, 2) a 1930 Martin OM28, 3) a 1934 Martin 00028 & 4) a 1938 Martin D18.
Each of these instruments were incredibly important in the production and development of the entire Martin guitar line as George discusses in this episode.
In addition, George describes some of the impacts to the vintage guitar business due to the Lacey Act & CITES government regulations on endangered species pertaining to guitars.

I actually got to play that '38 d-18 a few years back right after Gruhn got it in the store. That was hands down the best guitar I have ever played. That's saying something seeing as how I played almost every guitar in the store. While I was there I also played a '37 d-28 herringbone with a 90k price tag, and the '38 d-18 was better.

I bought a Washburn guitar around the year 1992.I still have it .Its a 14 fretter..I can't remember the exact model,,I think it was D9.It has a similar back inlay like an arrow just like the Martin guitars in this video.

I agree with the comment regarding the "banjo" sound and a lot of that might be down to the room and how it was recorded, giving a very bright almost "maple" type effect. I still prefer the sound of my 2013 Martin OM21 but I am biased in it's favour.

Honestly a side from the quality of sound these guitars could produce, what makes it more valuable and expensive is the history behind it. And try to consider we dont have aged trees as much as before.

I'm personally partial to Martin's (and not just because of my last name!) Other companies make great acoustics which I love...but when you hear a Martin you know it.

Matthew Martin Matthew, Thanks for Watching & for Your Comment! And, yes.....you are correct, Martin's have that 'old-school-straight-up-woody-tone" and the Taylor's etc (newer brands) have that "bright-super-glassy-pro-sheen-tone".....you know? What do you think about other brands? TMNtv

THE MUSICIAN NETWORK (TMNtv) I think that all companies make great guitars for the right player. I personally own an original 1972 Martin D-18 and a 2010 black Takamine guitar (forgot the model but around the 12-1,500 $ range) and several other guitars as well. I personally like the Martin better but the Takamine certainly holds its own. However, it does have a distinct "tinny" sound that older guitars simply don't have. It all depends on what kind of sound you are looking for and how dear your bank account is to you haha.

These are all great guitars but I think the ones they are building now sound and play incredibly and at a fraction of the price....intonation is much better....playability.....and even sometimes sound....if I had the money I would buy 10 great new guitars over one of these....just my opinion if course....to each his own....yes these are wonderful guitars....

I wonder what would happen if a blind type of study was done to compare Older Martins like these against some of the newer tone enhanced ones. Put people behind closed doors & evaluate different guitars...! My ear is not as keen as those of the industry icons, but I just wonder if there has ever been any blind testing or even electronic measuring to show a true measured difference in older verses new. Yeah, I know what the industry says. But......? Please, you hardliners take it easy on me! I'm just the kid who likes to see the inside of a engine, rather than take someone's word about what's inside. If we can hear a difference, then we should be able to measure it. Right / Wrong?

Yes, and play with Blue Chip picks instead of turtle shell! I have a guitar built by luthier Kipp Krusa (check out his website) that has fossilized woolly mammoth tusk for the nut, saddle, and bridge pins. I look at it and think, "20,000 years ago a big furry elephant was digging up grass with this!"

Appreciate the video, wonderful history and respect how these guitars have survived. Aside from being way out of reach to purchase one, I still prefer a newer guitar over an old / very old guitar. Also, is it me ,.... or do all these old guitars sound somewhat like a "banjo" ??? .....not that there's anything wrong with that . LOL ! ! Anyway, thanks for posting the video. Was very informative. :-)

Have you ever heard a banjo...? Sound is subjective as George mentioned, but as silver is the best conductor of heat and electricity so the woods used in those old guitars are the best conveyors of sound which is why they are expensive. Collectors desire them because to own something that is no longer acquirable is the very essence of being a collector.

Your either a fan of Coke or Pepsi. Chevy or Ford. Gibson or Martin. I like the Gibsons better mainly because the have a more diverse selection of instruments. Martin basically just builds flattop guitars. Albeit good ones.

I'm sure George is a great guy, I'm going to visit his shop in late spring, but i have always thought he speaks a bit slowly and over articulates words carefully. I knew a guy from Oklahoma that spoke that way, and I believe it is to deliberately obscure his accent and sounds terribly contrived. I can't imagine going through life having to be so mindful of every word I spoke just to sound so affected. Also I didn't know he even played the guitar. Well I hope I get to see him when I go to the shop, like I said, I'm sure he is a great guy.
