Great job! My family is from Lowell, Massachusetts so I heard stories of the storm growing up and of the devastating flooding there in the Spring of 1936. I have memories of Hurricane Bob and it was the event that sold me on a career in meteorology.

My Great great grandmother lived through this as a 23 yr old. She lived on a lake here in Worcester county Mass. She had a scrapbook of pictures of the aftermath. The best way to describe what it did to the trees is what Mt. St Helens left after it blew in 1980. Just matchsticks, all blown over in one direction (South to North). Truly remarkable. (Side note*) My great grandmother (different one) also survived the 1953 F5 Worcester Tornado by calling in sick to work. Her internship at “Assumption College” took a direct hit.

My pop (grandpa) has been going out to shelter island since the 30s and his parents bought a house out there in the 40s. I remember he used to tell me stories about the hurricane and how it completely tore the second floor off the beach club and destroyed the pier.

Also, 186 mph at Blue Hills Observatory and 100 mph at East Boston Airport after 6 PM? I think the estimate of a Cat 3 at landfall and Cat 2 at Hartford CT are grossly underestimated!

Hurricane ratings are based on sustained winds of at least a minute (or longer depending on the agency), not gusts. Gusts can be much higher; cyclone Olivia in 1996 recorded a three-second gust of over 400km/h but is rated as the Saffir-Simpson equivalent of C3. The video even makes it clear that those are gust reports, not sustained.
