Fascinating slice of Nihon culture, mythography, and propaganda, all rolled into one. Benkei, the giant monk who served Minamoto Yoshitsune so admirably, has a student. This student encounters a Tengu Lord in the forest and much folktale hilarity ensues. And it all comes down to footwork: The Tengu lord's battle on "One Tooth Geta" is worthy of note. Geta are those wooden platform footwear Japanese used to wear to keep their feet clean of mud. They come in "one tooth", and "two tooth" styles. The two tooth geta are far more stable for standing. Think of it as a platform shoe with one or two, two by fours supporting it. Imagine standing on only one two by four section . . . not easy. But Funakoshi, Okinawan Karate popularist and master, wrote that he preferred "one tooth geta". It's a lot like dancing on ice skates . . . except the skate on each shoe runs from side to side, instead of front to back. So, for the battle to be so spirited, while wearing one tooth geta, represents rare and wonderful agility and coordination. The masked warrior shown later is Benkei; a Sohei, a warrior monk. Most lived in temple complexes, whose aggregations of highly motivated monks were large and powerful political organizations, too. But the maverick types became "Yamabushi", literally "Mountain Warriors". Yamabushi have a reputation for learning their weapon skills from the birdlike tengu. They provided an unpredictable element--the sort of off the wall personality associated with other self determined, schismatic, hermits. One met on a mountainside might greet you, bless you, or rob you. Benkei has defeated almost everyone, but, his streak is about to end. Enter Minamoto Yoshitsune, a "bishonen", or pretty boy. Yoshi (as we used to call him in temple school) had been trained by the Tengu, magical birdmen, whose god resides atop Mount Hiei (above Kyoto). A mere mortal, even the great Benkei, would be no match for him.

I'm currently trying watch every anime ever, that's available on the internet (some are lost films or not granted viewing access). So far this one has greatly improved animation from the last few I watched from 1936-38.

It's amazing how early anime style was closer to American Animation (Namely Popeye or Betty Boop). It really has changed over the years.
