Anyone who has followed this channel for a while knew deep down inside Matt was going to keep the 1939 Mercury Coupe. He tried his best to play it off, but his poker face isn't the best. While this project is going on the back burner Matt has already gone down the rabbit hole. Over the past week he has already started to gather parts and has plans for the project. Matt sits down and talks about the parts he has gathered, the direction of the project and the look he wants to go for. Thanks for watching and comment below with your thoughts on the plans for the Merc Coupe
Oh, Mike didn't even get a bruise.

I fully agree. The chop and channel idea seems so crude compared to an already classic body style for this car.

Look if matt doesn't custom this rust bucket its future is parts or rat rod...... No one would restore it! Its just too far gone... Congrats matt on your new project! I hope mike is ok that looked bad.... If that tractor has a lower gear might be alittle safer if this happens again

@@paulquirk9041 hey guys, I do trust Matt's judgment and skills. He has a real heart for tradition and craftsmanship. I especially appreciate his love of the flathead V8 and early OHV engines. Bottom line, it's his car, his project. I respect him... lots!

First off, I'm glad Mike is OK! That could have been a lot worse. I'm also happy to see another classic saved. As far gone as it is, I think a custom makes sense. I just wish that you could find a Ford motor for it, but at least you're saving it.

Early olds and caddy engines were king of the hill in the early days and the Caddy is such a perfect custom engine because they were so smooth. I dig caddy engines myself. Any early OHV engine is neat in an old custom or hot rod if done right.

IronTrap Garage you’re right Matt, I ain’t gonna lie. The Cads and Olds quickly dispatched the Flatheads in the streets. Ford was behind after the war because Henry was really beginning to slip in the mid to late 40’s and FoMoCo as a whole this fell into disarray. Many of you probably know Henry II was plucked out of the Navy to run the company (mainly for wartime supplier purposes) and after the war they were in terrible shape. Henry II hired the “Whiz Kids” and were able to get both the business procedures corrected AND introduce the iconic ‘49 Ford, Mercury and Lincoln models. The Flathead soldiered on primarily for two reasons, first it was such a good engine that it could remain viable for a few more years. Second and more importantly there was simply not enough money to develop a new line of OHV’s at the same time they did the three new car lines. This set up one of the worst injustices in all of automobiledom. The iconic and cool Fords which in my opinion were on average the best looking cars in their price range were virtually all swapped with some sort of anything but a genuine Ford engine. (The heart of the vehicle) This is akin to if there was a tidal wave of Honda powered Harley Davidsons. I don’t think that would be thought of so fondly. I understand though tradition is tradition even if I think it’s wrong.

@@michaelthompson1110 That's a pretty good synopsis, and all true. But it doesn't go into Ford's first player in the OHV market, the short-lived Y block. That engine never really caught on with hot rodders for two reasons: it was late to the game in 1954, and it didn't have a strong aftermarket for performance parts like the GM engines and the Gen 1 Hemis. It ran pretty good, but was not up to the power levels of the other OHV engines, so you didn't see them used very often. Ford decided that they needed a smaller V8, and a bigger V8, so the FE and small block Windsor series replaced the mid-size Y block, and were both great engines - but coming too late for the custom and hot rod swapping craze of the mid to late '50s, so the other engines became more "traditional" in these cars.
@williamworden3597

The cadillac motor is perfect for this car Matt. It's about traditional as it comes. Can't believe anybody would replace it in a 40 Ford for a SBC (must have been a. ...shudder. ...street rodder ).

This will be a fun one to watch. As rough as it is, it's a good choice to go custom. You're not cutting up a good one, and your using a car alot of people would not have saved. It's great to see your doing something with it. Also, am early style custom will fit right into your collection. It's a little something different for each car you build.

Coming to the party late, but wanted to add a comment re sectioning the body, along w/ the channel. (This car is the perfect candidate w/ the rotten bottom sections.) I recall a couple of 39-40 Fords that were sectioned and they look pretty good in the early custom theme. Same goes for the Caddy engine; very popular swap back then...

That car was one of the cars featured in a 1949 edition of Hot Rod mag. It appears that a couple of the photos you showed were of that car. If you need any detailed photos or information on his car let me know and I'll get them for you. I can access this car just about anytime. Let me know how and I will give you my contact info.
