These clocks have a silent mode lever typically on the front by the hinge for the glass (it can catch you out), they also have another characteristic of great consequence; namely that when they're wound and the time is set on the face the chiming mechanism will play catch up and auto-correct after a few chimes. So you never have to set the chiming mechanism to the time shown on the dial. (It was a major sales feature when these clocks were being built)

I'd have liked to see him adjust that mechanism (obviously it didn't adjusting on this occasion). I've dismantled an identical movement and found it a very ticklish job to set up the mechanism that holds the hour chime back, so to speak, until the minute hand has caught up with it. It seems to rely on a fraction of a millimetre's adjustment. But then I'm a complete amateur.

@@hermoglyph2255 Thanks for your comment, I know nothing of that feature beyond the fact that it exists; it's heartening to know that the beast is designed to catch you out of it possibly can. Very best wishes John Perth Australia

@@beachbum4691 In essence, for it to work properly (excuse the technical language) one thing has to turn another thing so that it lifts another thing that lifts another thing that turns a shaft so as to raise another thing just far enough, BUT NOT A NANOMETER FURTHER. Which may sound simple . . . But I got the better of it in the end. Thanks for the good wishes - same to you! .

It's nice because I can have it on the windowsill in my room without it chiming quite a thick case so it's literally silent during the night

Nice, I was just repairing my Gu Art Decco clock from the 1930s. It has a plaque on the front saying presented on 06/04/1940 and the clock comes from a Darnall, Sheffield which was heavily bombed during the war, so it's a survivor. I thought the main spring had gone but fortunately it was just a ratchet slip except for the fact the pendulum suspension spring broke when I removed the movement, they're only thin things anyway. Just ordered a replacement from ebay. Hopefully it will be ticking away this time next week

Very interesting .My Mantle clock misses a few strikes at 12 O' clock both in Westminster and Willington tunes. The chiming is fine though. I am a collector from Mumbai, India. wondered if there's a novices way of remedying it.?

I noticed hammers moving on the warning, I corrected this by moving the Chime warning wheel to 1/4 of a turn, instead of 1/2 a turn,on a Garrard I worked on. So the chime cylinder doesn't move enough to move the hammer levers.

Goodness (I write as a complete amateur). The book says the hammer tails must be only resting on the levers, not raised at all. OK, but moving your warning wheel? I'm sure you're right, but can't you just release the central ratio wheel and let the hammers fall into place, then retighten?

I've got a mantle clock similar to that in terms of case but I accidentally broke the balance unit spring is there any chance you could tell me where I could buy a new spring or unit preferably spring because it was my grannies clock and she is dead now. The actual wheel is in pristine condition but the spring is bent and I've tried to fix it but can't fit it into that damned slot in that bit on the bottom

Is the Chime / Silent lever set correctly?
@beachbum4691

Does your clock have two or three winding keyholes?, The type with just two winding keyholes only chimes the hours. Note these clocks have a small silent mode lever typically on the front by the hinge for the glass (it can catch you out), they also have another characteristic of great consequence; namely that when they're wound and the time is set on the face the chiming mechanism will play catch up and auto-correct after a few chimes. So you never have to set the chiming mechanism to the time shown on the dial. (It was a major sales feature when these clocks were being built)
