This is the only video I have found so far showing most of the dissemble / reassembly process on these Smith and Enfield movements. I would like to service my grandfathers clock but lack the courage. I bought my self a cheap “fixer upper” online of the same model movement to practice on. Even without the sentimental value it’s a bit daunting. I still feel responsible for a piece of history. Your video has helped a lot. I’m still afraid I won’t be able to keep all those gear wheels identified so I can clean and replace them correctly. I guess I’ll roll my video camera during disassembly and get into it now 🤠 Thanks for your video!

Update: This video really helped me reassemble my movement. I’m just trying to set the timing now. It’s a nice feeling to get it working again. For those intending to do the same thing I noticed a couple of things worth mentioning. When re-installing the clutch wheel the little washer goes on the shaft first then the gear, then clutch. I had to use a pair or smooth jawed pliers to flatten the clutch slightly to get the tapper pin in. There seems to be two possible holes to install the hammer lifting shaft. Scotty installs his in one yet mine goes in the other hole closest to the edge of the plate. Must be more than one version of this movement. It’s obvious if you check because the lifting arm doesn’t line up with the star wheel if you have the post in the wrong hole. Better to check early than when you have all those pivots lined up only to disassemble it again. Good luck with your movement! 🤠

Thanks for posting this video! I bought a used Enfield mantle clock because I heard that they are a good clock for beginners. Unfortunately, someone has been into mine and there is oil everywhere. I have been studying your videos before doing any work. Getting a let down tool and mainspring c clamps are next on my list.

Excess oil in a clock movement is a constant problem as is broken and non-original parts. A propper letdown tool and mainspring clamps will make your life a lot easier. Timesavers has them.

Great video, and I followed it completely as I overhauled the exact same model. After I reinstalled the gears and bolted the plates together, I found that I had forgotten to install the clutch so watched your assembly carefully to see how I missed doing so but, unless I'm losing my mind which is probably, it appears that you didn't assemble it with the clutch either as I don't see it in place as you bolt the plates together either. Am I missing something? Could you also explain what the tapered pin you are filing up is for as I'm scratching my head on that one. Thanks very much, an excellent video.

Hey mate. I've got my Smith's Enfield mantle clock working without the pendulum, thanks to your video. It seems to slow down and speed up, and when I add the pendulum, it won't run for longer than a few seconds. Any advice on what I can do from here? I haven't pulled the whole thing apart, just adjusted the escapement..

Thanks a million Scottie, really helpful and informative video. I am new to the hobby and so far have only disassembled and serviced a few old Ansonia movements with count wheels. Your video has shown me how to set about disassembling the couple of rack and snail movements that I have. Can I ask you a question please, I have a Warmink bracket clock with a balance wheel escapement that is out of beat. How do you set the beat on a balance wheel clock? I know how to adjust the rate but the beat on a balance wheel has me beat! John, Ireland.

Hi Scottie. I have watched your Smith enfield video many times and have followed every point. I have been successful in repairing my 90 year old mums clock. It now runs very well. One thing I can't get right is the fact that it chimes for over 30 strikes sometimes. I can't see what causes it. Thank you so much for your brilliant instructions. Pete

The pin on the Warning wheel, the last wheel in the striking train before the Fly, is not being arrested by top arm of the rack hook. Thus the movement will keep striking.

Great video! I work on my own clock as as a hobby. Love it. Just found a Smith's enfield clock that needs cleaning but the clock main spring is very tight and slips sometimes when trying to wind. What would cause that? You video left out the service for the main spring. Do you have one that shows how to disassemble, inspect, clean and oil? Thanks

Hi Vince, it sounds like the Click Spring might need removing and opening up a little bit to strengthen its hold on the Click. This is the method I use to clean and grease all mainsprings in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZqVn3ptgpKkiMU

Best to check for wear in the bushings AFTER cleaning, so that you don't get a false reading from the old congealed oil. When they're clean, it's easier to see tiny faults !

I have a mantel clock I would like to identify. Could you offer any ideas? The only markings I can find is the letters " Y K" stamped on the back plate in the center near the bottom behind the pendulum. It also has "12 cm" and "190,66" stamped on the back plate on the bottom lower right side. The hands are held on by a tapered cross pin. The chime is a curled spring steel and is separate from the clock work. It is attached to a stand that bolts to the floor of clock cabinet and it chimes the hour and half hour. The face plate & glass cover are held in place with small brads nailed from inside the clock cabinet. I bought the clock in Northern Ireland in 1972 (stationed with the U.S. Navy) and it was very well used at that time. It still runs today (2022). Any info you might provide would greatly appreciated.

I'm thankful for your reply. Well from the make/model of it, and from photos i think it is a French mantelpiece clock and there is no marking on it. But "Brocot Propte" is written on the slow fast control gear. On the front plate is a number 6277 and on the rear glass holder is 4343 AL. That's all that is marked on it. But from the looks of it, it's a French make. If i have your whatsapp number then i can send you the photos of the clock.

@@AjitSingh-km4jt , sure sounds French. The Brocot Escapement is the exposed escapement you see on better quality French mantle clocks.

Hi Scottie, I'm very serious about learning how to service my own clocks collection. Is there any order I should watch your videos to learn how to go about it correctly?
@ScottiesClockWorld
@ScottiesClockWorld 2 жыл бұрын
Best to start off with single train (Timepiece) American clock movements, they are the easiest to learn. Once you have got the grasp of them then start on double train American clocks, the ones with a striker. Then English striking movements. Leave the German striking movements till later as many of them have an auto-correct feature that seems very complicated at first. Once you are competent with them then you can start on triple train (Chiming) clocks. If you want to get into restoring antique clocks then early French mantle clocks will be your next step. Hope that gives you a starting point. I will be shooting a New Haven timepiece clock movement service soon so keep an eye out for it.

Hello Scottie. I started getting into clocks by attempting to get my 1927 presented Grandfather's German Mantel,clock, Westminster Chimers etc, A verey fine clock. I got it all back together working except ther strikes ended up not quite right. My local clockmaker / At that point I found that a pivot had broken off whilst assembling. I will return to that later, I want to re-pivot sometime. Meanwhile I have cleaned ane reassembled an Enfield clock (Strike only) and done one rebushing (Following your video) That was on the back end of the cannon pinion. I see advice on line to leave that assembled unless the pivot hole is worn. Well you cam move the hands sideways for at least 2mm, so I need to get the lifting wheel (name)? off. What is the best way? I was thinking of supporting the plate on the vice and tapping the arbor via a piece of wood. Can I do better?
@grahamfp4068
@grahamfp4068 2 ай бұрын
Well, I can be rather impetuous and just did it. First bit of wood was too soft. Then I heated up the wheel before trying again, one sharp tap and job doner, All re=bushed and hope I have replaced it so the strike happens when the minute hand is near the right place!
