After years of hunting for a genuine DeArmond Tremolo, and even scratch-building two clones, I finally got the opportunity to work on a real one. The unit as received had a functioning motor, but nothing else worked.....so it was a great excuse to completely disassemble the unit, replace the power cord and Intensity pot, refill the little brass pot with "Magic Tremolo Fluid", adjust the mechanism and add a spring to retain the eccentric wheel against the tapered drive spindle. Naturally, once completed, a full audio test was done to verify the function of the Speed and Intensity adjustments.
The second video features an in-depth tour of the two electromechanical tremolo clones I built, with a demonstration of their operation at different speeds.

I got to meet Mr. DeArmond; I was working in a physians office and one of the doc's knew I played guitar. I was pretty green at the time on guitar and wish I knew more, but even then (late 80's) there was very little info, unlike today.....he was very nice and humble. What a visionary! The Rowe factory still stands, or at least part of it and every time I drive by it I think of him and his legacy! Great video Uncle Doug~thanks so much for sharing . @@UncleDoug - I guess that's where I read the interview - it stuck with me 'cuz I'm definitely a trem guy - actually a full-on swamp creature - a little throb, a little reverb and a little delay make a stew I can't resist - kinda like the notes are smeared just a touch, like ink on paper. I want to thank and honor you for your work and videos - I watch many of them. I built my own Vibro Champ inspired by you (that swamp thing again) and was fortunate to buy a NOS output transformer directly from Bob Rissi, who was on the original Vibro Champ design team at Fender back in the day, when he was liquidating his shop. I know you have a loyal following, and deservedly so. I hope you feel suitably appreciated...

Uncle Doug, I managed to buy one of these, which needs restoration, on ebay a year or so ago. I got as far as researching it to find out about using Windex to replace the fluid, I believe they used a small self tapping screw to replace the solder seal in the article I read, so the tank could be refilled in the future. Your details on refilling it will be very helpful. My DeArmond had been modified with a double knife blade power switch on a line cord to power it up, not the safest solution, with exposed terminals, which I replaced with a toggle switch on the case like the original. My tremolo's case also has missing paint, and I found out it was like the original Kennedy tool box brown paint. So I bought an expensive spray can of it, only to find out it is no longer supplied as wrinkle finish paint, only a textured type, which was a disappointment, so I put my project on hold. Your video has inspired me to get it out and finish the project, thanks for all the great info.

Very cool unit! I worked at DeArmond designing pickups in the late 70s-early 80s. i was able to score a couple of slightly newer units (plastic covers) from the leftovers and one still works well! The other needs new fluid. The lady there who did the repairs told me that they put Windex in a tin can and let it sit overnight, then injected it into the little cylinder with a syringe. A little hocus pocus!
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the historical info, Ken. I wonder if leaving the Windex overnight allowed it to pick up some metal ions from the tin can, increasing its conductivity?

@@UncleDoug She said it was in a silver lined can which I had never heard of. I did see her take the fluid out of the can and inject it in the cylinder then seal up the hole on one end with a 100 watt American Beauty soldering iron. I didn't totally verify the can being silver lined.

Hi Uncle Doug, enjoyed your video as always! Also enjoyed your created interpretations of the tremolo machine you serviced. When you kept talking about magic fluid, I was picturing mercury or something equally volutile. The workings of that "keg" reminded me a bit of the mercury switch inside an old school thermostat. I enjoy your videos and creations, thanks for an entertaining and informative channel.

Nice that you got his model 60 Tremolo control working again. Lots of tricky bits. Mechanical stuff sometimes gets you to put the old thinking cap on. That may be how you designed your own and done it so well. Excellent educational stuff Uncle Doug ! It's funny how you reference the video of "before you had a KZbin channel " for another video at that site actually shows your face in it! So know I know what you look like, glasses, mustache and playing guitar. Shh. I never would tell! Regards, Steve
