The timber case is warped and cracked and the inside is a mess. I will have to give this a lot of attention to get it looking like it did 70 years ago. Will this one be too much for me?

With all that is going on in the world today, with the wildfires in Siberia, Greece and the western United States, Delta variant, particularly in Latin America, things in Afghanistan, the former U.S. president's endless battles, I get down and frustrated sometimes. But I can always tune in to Dave's Radio Adventures for a bit of relief and consolation. I appreciate what you do and how much it helps me.

Fantastic work David. I don't think most people appreciate the aesthetic value of the interior work as they are only concerned that the unit works. It's very nice to see you clean up the chassis and make the interior look as good as the unit will sound when you are finished.

I have done many Tektronix scope refurbs. I had a 316 that looked as though it saw service in a burger joint. When they are filthy like that, I remove the transformers and wash the whole thing using Simple Green and distilled water. This one had several cardboard shrouded caps so the light bulb (dimbulb) went off and I though hmmm, I'll protect then using condoms. Well, after several hours drying in my oven at the lowest setting, I found I had permanent additional protection on those caps😬😬Live and learn!

It made one-day and test matches enjoyable to see (either via a delayed telecast on TV or in real-time if you could get to the ground) and _The 12th Man_ comedy albums were a delight to listen to as well. Richie (in my view) will never to be forgotten. R.I.P. As for the radio, this is a W-I-P and looks to be a fun project at the same time. :D

Dave, I like how you refurbish and rebuild and try to maintain the original design of the set you’re working on. The little things like the brass double work sure you made foreground connections. In another episode you took a toggle switch part to clean it and successfully put it back together again. @@DavidTipton101 you've inspired me to get back into building projected and one will be a small tube (valve) guitar amplifier. Maybe you have someone similar in your neck of the woods?

@@user-nd3lx1zg9t That's great to hear, good luck with your amp Tim. Sadly it is too expensive to source cloth from the US. I just did a dummy run on a piece of cloth from Mojotone, the cloth was $18 and shipping was $40, so $58USD. That's over $89AUD. I guess if I bought lots of cloth the shipping may not go up so much.

Great to see you working on another radio David - sorry about the cruise but at least I get to see another episode in your repairs. Certainly looks a million dollars when you had finished cleaning and painting up the chassis. There is a proprietary rust killer on the market that I use (in a spray can) used to use it on the bikes and still use it for small projects like gate hinges - same process rust goes black - but no doubt you know about it anyway. Loved the way i could see all the parts, washers screws etc laid out ready as you re-assembled - so organized! Looking forward to the next episodes with this radio.

Great channel! Good to see this old radio finally got a good home. By the way, that casting with the cracks probably is made of some sort of alloy. Like old Dinky Toys and model trains from that era, so called “zinc pest” can seriously cause cracks and ultimately the metal falls apart completely. Nothing can be done about it other than replacing the parts if needed. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland, bye, Willem.

I saw you with this radio and thought "Seen this radio before" and yes we had one, only thing was it had a selector at the rear for changing the voltage 110v, 220, 230v, 240v and 250v I think. Maybe there was less, but I remember thinking that was a lot of choices. Anyway, it died and I couldn't see anything other than it had a burned smell and that the wires were crumbling with dust coming out when you touched them. So it was decided that a newer radio was to be bought and this one was put in the shed. It might be still there as we moved house. I did check there were voltages coming out the transformer, so it was fine, but as these old valve radios can be dangerous I was not allowed to go further. I had only a tiny multimeter anyway and I was not keen to poke about as I was still at primary school. The bulbs didn't do much to light the dial during the day, I remember finding out at night the display was lit up and had a look to find two bulbs at the top of the display glowing away. The dial was not marked in radio stations like other radios we owned, if I remember right it was just Megacycles or MHz or KHz or Hz I can't remember, it was a longer than I care to admit. EDIT: Were these exported around the world do you know?

Hi Bob, that's quite a story, you have a good memory. I can't imagine an Aussie radio having a 110 volt option and I don't think our radios ventured far from Australia. It would be interesting to know. It may have been a UK radio and we stole the design or a US one if it just had the frequencies on it. Thanks Bob 🤔🙂

Hello Mr. Tipton Im enjoying watching you do your magic, dont have a clue whats going on with all the electronic gadgets but still satisfiing to watch, Im into restoring watches, the reason for my input is that i have found a product that gives me results that seems unreal, it is a protection product used in the proffesional marine industri, and it gives any plastic or painted surface a showroom look that lasts, and is sealing the surface way better than anything i have used in the past, you apply it and wait 10 min then vipes it over with a dry cotton cloth and voila. @DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Жыл бұрын
Hi justicelut, the colours changed from time to time so it will give a rough idea of the date. From 1934 to 1941 the stickers had a prefix before the stamped number. The sticker on this radio doesn't have a prefix letter so it's safe to assume it was post war. I probably didn't know that or had forgotten when I made the video. That variable resistor in the cathode adjusts the current (also voltage) in the tube. The resistor is bypassed by the .5uf, so the cathode is at A.C. ground for rf signals. Adjusting the current can compensate for variance in the gm (transconductance) to establish the desired gain. They must have had issues with the differences in the tubes so they wanted to adjust them to a specific gain.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, I don't recall the circuit exactly but what you say is correct. My understanding of the reason for it was to get the best reception of weaker stations using the adjustment and the AGC will pull back the stronger stations, it was written up somewhere 🙂

That variable resistor in the cathode will alter the gain of that stage (and the IF stage). I'd be interested to know why they included it. In that location it will affect the local oscillator. I a variable cathode resistor (on the front panel) to allow user control of the RF stage of the radio I recently sent you a link to. I reckon if you turn it to the max resistance end, the oscillator either won't start or will be weak. At the other end the whole thing may be unstable. If that's the case, I would set it just before instability sets in for max performance. Sometimes a radio will howl on warm up if stability is on the edge. (Now, how do I know that? There's a reason why the oscillator coil in my radio is inside a copper shield!) That's a nice radio and I bet it will look great when you have finished it David.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 5 жыл бұрын
Hi 984francis, I will past in a reply I sent to another person: "it is a gain control but I'm not sure why. I did some checking and it's called a 'threshold sensitivity adjustment'. You may remember there was a voltage divider in the same area, when shortwave is selected it switches in the voltage divider, in broadcast band it uses the 1200 Ohm variable resistor to control the cathode/grid bias. The set has AGC 🤔" I will play with it when the time comes but I will leave it where it is as I don't know why I would adjust it and to what specification 🙂
