I'm always amazed how much you are able to do with the wooden cases. I hate the particle board/press board. To me, it's the reason there aren't many antiques passed the years they started using that stuff. I had a stereo much like this one, but I think it was an RC from the 70s. The humidity caused the press wood to swell. I'm sorry to say, I couldn't salvage it.

Sometimes you cant see the spark over indside the can as they are usually filled with jelly like substance but this the way to attempt whisker blow to clear the whisker. I took a can apart once and it was full of whiskers. They glint like silver but it is very difficult to clean them out as the device is very delicate at the wire and transistor juntions. If you cant clear it try searching for equavelents.

Hi Chris, thanks. I was very impressed with the finish, I have only used Danish Oil a few times on projects but I realise now it has potentially wider applications than I thought 🙂

Loved the restoration, David! Can you please tell me what criteria do you go by to decide oil finish or other types of finish? Thanks!
@DavidTipton1012 күн бұрын
Thanks John. I take clues for the original finish, this one was done in oil so I followed suit. European radios tend to be full gloss while local ones have a bit duller finish. Due to my intermittent use of the the finishing material and the tendency for it to go off, I have had to resort to rattle cans lately 🙂

That's how we did it, other countries did the same or similar. It was very easy to use, the downside was when new stations were added they were not displayed. In the 50s through to the 90s the stations stayed the same 👍🙂

Great job on the cabinet. I really like that styling. I was a bit worried about those Tassie Oak strips. I had the same trouble using a piece of Tassie Oak on the HMV to make up a missing moulding. The hardest part was getting an even colour on it. I ended up using shellac under the stain. So you're still keeping us guessing about the mystery addition. Let me know when you've settled in at Manuel's. I'm sure he'll have room for a couple of visitors. Cheers
@DavidTipton1015 күн бұрын
Hi Don, thank you. I should have used some veneer on top of the strips. I did lay down a coat of the Danish oil first to avoid the different colours but that didn't work. Shellac or maybe a coat of my grain sealer may have helped, even some varnish. The repairs don't stand out and I don't notice them which is surprising because I notice everything that I'm not 100% happy about. Mystery! All will be revealed in time. I assumed Manuel's offer was permanent🙂

Great job on the cabinet. This reminds me of when I was young and keen we did many cabinets and furniture with the so called Scandinavian oil finish. It is easy to get a beautiful finish Before 3D printing I’d be bending those clips and such out of aluminium or maybe moulded with plastibond resin. A very tedious and not always pretty result.

You keep saying your not a woodworker and then proceed to be one. 😊 I think the problem you were having with the light/dark spots on the spliced on piece was due to differences in grain direction. The veneer is peeled off the log lengthwise, and the splice looks to be quarter sawn which will give you extreme light/dark stained area because of the differences in the porosity of the grain. But it was no match for your woodworking skill! I really looks good now. Well, I was really disappointed when you didn't belt out a tune after the mic restore. 🎶 Oh wait; I keep forgetting about YT copyright issues. 😊
@DavidTipton1015 күн бұрын
Thanks Odyssey. I have no formal training in wood working, so I learn as I go. It was always a gamble using the ash but it is about the best I had laying around with a tight grain. It worked OK in the end. Haha... you would not have enjoyed my singing I can assure you 😄

Hi David, as usual an excellent presentation. I have had a passion for these particular Kriesler radio grams likewise. I have two complete units and a further two radio chassis’s only. The one common problem I have with all the radio chassis’s is the poor state of the print on the glass. A lot of it has distorted/ damaged. Is there someone or something I can do to get this issue sorted. The radio grams are very well engineered and your videos on the restoration of these models are very pleasing to watch 🎉
@DavidTipton1016 күн бұрын
Thank you Geoff. Storage in damp conditions destroys the print. I have used a vinyl cutter to recreate simple dial glasses, it works well and the iron on type is permanent. Doing the artwork is tedious. There is a chap in Sydney call Mike that does them, try him. [email protected] 👍
