I did not even finish one minute to watch to realize what senseless endeavour war is. A beautiful village, a home, built with hard labor, where people worked hard, lived their lifes, and then, for some stupid reasons, a foreign invador takes it away. Well, I am German, a grandson of the invadors born in the 1970ies. Family lived in Silesia, today Poland. Also lost everything. Taken away, fled to East Germany, then to West Germany in early 1950ies to rebuild the former factory. Still lucky, but so many millions died senseless.

They weren't "invaders" these were their nataral living space before overtaken by slavs. They needed to "invade" to liberate the people suffering under communism and prevent the spread to western europe. Both my grandfathers were there at the age of 19 and 21, from the first day of the war as privates to the last days as military officers with military awards. One of them participated in the release of children from the Solospils death camp, where the German Nazis imprisoned Russian children, who were used as donors for blood transfusions to wounded German soldiers, almost none of the children waited for the Russian army, 95% died from exsanguination. I have documents and photographs confirming the facts of this episode of the war with the participation of my grandfathers.

I can't help watching these old film reels wondering who made it to 1945 and who didn't. Who died? How? Where? How did their story end? Like the guy looking at the big hunks of shrapnel at 1:35. Did he end up catching similar shrapnel outside of Sevastopol? Did he catch rounds from an Ilyushin while falling back to defend Berlin? Did he lose half a foot to the cold in that first winter and get sent home? I kinda do the same thing when I watch old European silent films from before 1939. Especially old German films. I will look at the actors/actresses, and the extras in the background, and wonder which ones joined the nazi party. Which ones went to war. Which ones were killed in some bombing run over Berlin. Which ones were jews and what their fate was. It's a morbid curiosity I suppose.

In my village lives the son of a non-commissioned officer of the reserve, in 1939 he studied agriculture in Grodno-Belarus. A small Ribentrop / Molotov contract allowed lay officers to return home through the occupation zones. After September 17, he was sent to the camp in Ostashkov, where he wanted to write an application to the commandant of the NKVD camp for transfer to the territories occupied by Germany. However, his senior fellow officers advised him against it, although rumors were circulating that the Soviets would murder them, his colleagues said our allies France and England would not allow us to murder us. Once he discovered something related to the senior of the Polish camp / general, a friend approached him and said get the fuck out of here and write an application as soon as possible. He was probably the last surviving officer from Ostashkov, got a permit from the NKVD and returned to Lublin, where during the occupation he met Gomułka, ruling Poland from 1956, and told him everything. Katyń, Ostaszków, Starobielsk, Kozielsk shot in the back of the head, a sunken barge in the White Sea with living officers. 12.IX.1939 Allied betrayal at Abbevvile.

Most of the Germans in the vid would be shot after surrender by the Soviets. The eastern front was bad vs bad, what happened to each is neither right nor wrong. It was just how each side operated. Both sides starved each other out, so no I don’t feel bad for the Russians, I also don’t feel bad for the Germans.

Three of my ancestors fought in the meat grinders of the eastern front, on the Soviet side. Only two returned, only one with all his limbs. And they were extremely lucky. But regardless of which side, of the right and wrong, I feel really sad to see the beaten and confused faces of the POWs, both Soviet and German. Most didn't survive. While Soviet soldiers are seen today as heros, at least in Russia, the German soldiers are often seen as monsters and demonised. Which is not fair. They were simple men, boys - soldiers under orders. Even many of those in the SS units were propagandised in state ideology, just like the Soviets were. Glad that this war is over and people of Germany and Russia live in relative prosperity and governments have more or less cordial relationship, despite the problems, which seem like nothing compared to this tragedy.

All due to plotting and planning of a political leader who had no experience or training in military strategy and tactics, but thought he knew more about them than his generals. The very idea of taking on both Great Britain and the Soviet Union at the same time should have alerted the Germans to the fact that they were being led by a madman.

Impossible? I don't think so. The Soviet union was on the verge to collapse. If Hitler would have destroyed the British expedition force at Dunkirk, kept bombing British military airports instead of switching to cities, the land lease hadn't took place or they wouldn't have to invade greece first, the war could have gone different.

So much for the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact ...
@mikeromney4712
@mikeromney4712 3 жыл бұрын
The pact prevented the intervention of France during the Polish campaign. During the French campaign, Stalin massed 109 divisions on his western border against the 7 German border defense divisions for an attack on East Prussia, so that the highest army command had to move the entire 18th army from France to the eastern border in an express march to counter this threatening deployment. Hitler convinced Stalin that he would invade England in September 1941. (There is even a secret flight of a Ju 52 to Moscow on May 15, 1941 documented, with instructions to the Soviet air defense to not to consider this aircraft as hostile, which brought a note to Stalin, in which he was informed that some "neglectful" German generals of the "landing forces" could possibly provoke border incidents in order to prevent the unwanted war against England. Fun fact: The German troops in East Prussia were even equipped with English-speaking interpreters and dictionaries to make the deception perfect.) All what Stalin had to do was waiting for the perfect opportunity, when the Wehrmacht is embarking (out of reach from the RAF reconnaissance) in East Prussia to make their way to the channel.....around 120 Soviet division, at the ready for the first assault, got cought on the cold foot.....This would also explain Stalins reactions after the first hours of the German attack - "This is only a provocation - this is not an attack.".... So the already fragile pact had fulfilled its purpose and enabled Hitler to hit a superior opponent in his unfavorable attack position ... I know, this sounds crazy, but when you dig deeper in this topic, you would be shocked how less truth is in the official historiography. The defense in Nuremberg even received a list of points which could not be included in defense, so that Germany would have to bear sole blame for an aggressive attack against the Soviet Union. The letter from Hitler to Stalin was translated and documented in a book in 2003 by a former Generalmajor of the East German People's Army (Generalmajor Dr. Bernd Schwipper), who studied military science in Moscow and speaks fluent Russian....

Places where footage was taken (Lubycza Królewska, Rawa Ruska) were in Poland before 1939. Inhabitated by Polish citizens of Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian ethnicity. Soviets annexed those places in September 1939 when they joined Germans in their attack on Poland. Nowadays Lubycza Królewska is a village in Poland and Rawa Ruska [Рава-Руська] in Ukraine, just accross the border. So in Rawa Ruska one could've actually lived in: Austro-Hungarian Empire, Poland, USSR, Germany [or formally: German Generalgouvernment], and Ukraine - without even moving anywhere at all ;) .

@@luistilli2328 I suspect that the biggest cause of the German defeat in the Soviet Union was Adolf Hitler. In addition to the insanity of even launching an invasion of the USSR, while still bogged down in a war with Great Britain, Hitler took personal control of directing the invasion and made the kind of colossal mistakes one might expect of an attack being planned and orchestrated by a former corporal, turned politician. He became obsessed, for personal reasons, with taking Stalingrad and when the advance got bogged down there, he pulled troops from elsewhere on the front and sent them into the bloodbath of Stalingrad. Some of those troops were within a days march from Moscow, which they could have easily taken, because Stalin was also obsessed with Stalingrad's defense and had pulled troops away from Moscow, in order to reinforce the defenders of Stalingrad.

@@dickwarren5087 I agree...and also don’t forget..that other Corporal (Napoleon) actually TOOK Moscow! Occupied it. Although (as history has now shown) Moscow didn’t fall to the Germans...but knowing the Russian tenacity and the severe way in which the Soviets acted and treated their own..I would not have been surprised IF (even after a Moscow occupation by the Germans) the Soviets would have continued to fight. It must also be remembered they moved much of their industry out of harms way and reinstated it deep in central and even further east in Russia...way out of Germany’s reach (Only edited due to KZbin constantly correcting proper words and misspelling the ones it should!)

A lot did not care or enjoyed it. A lot were scared. A lot were embarrassed or baffled. Some felt USSR were the real enemy. But after a while, it was simply war which feeds itself until one side feels defeated. However, even during the very bad times, some noted the atrocities and could see wrong from right. So it was a mix of humanity and, well, the darker side of humanity. Ideology and poor economics (scarcity) drove a lot of the justification for the dark deeds.
