Made for the home market during WWII, this black & white silent film shows news events in the year 1943, focusing on WWII. It was edited by Leslie Winik.
Opening titles: News Thrills of 1943 (:07-:11). Title: Allied Victory in Tunisia. General Montgomery discusses the final push with his men. He stands and talks as the men smile. General Eisenhower visits Montgomery for a council of war. The two shake hands. Gabes falls to the British as rockets are fired, explosions abound. A parade afterwards with men playing bagpipes. Soldiers and children. U.S. tanks move through the desert. U.S. fires at the Nazis. Explosion in the distance. Johnny Doughboy meets Tommie Atkins as U.S. and British armies meet. The troops smile and greet one another. Allies take a hill, soldiers move forward (:12-2:27). A barrage of nighttime artillery. Gurka infantrymen run and wave weapons. Jeeps go by. A sign reads Ferryville. A man salutes troops on a tank. British troops on the march. A solider checks a building (2:28-4:02). A jeep drives with troops, a woman waves. People thanks the troops. Allies round up Axis prisoners. Title: Captured Jap Films. Preparations aboard a Japanese ship bound for Pearl Harbor. Japanese soldiers listen. Pilots. Japanese Zeros start to take off for Pearl Harbor. Zeros in the air. Actual bombing footage of Pearl Harbor in 1941 as filmed from a Japanese plane during the attack. The Battle of Corregidor, May 5-6, 1942, was the Japanese conquest of the Philippines. Japanese soldiers climb a ladder, use a flamethrower. Outnumbered, General Wainwright and his men surrender to japanese forces (4:02-6:20). General Doolittle leads a raid to Tokyo, Japan. The planes are ready to go and the ship sails towards Japan. Plane takes off and heads for Tokyo. Sixteen B-25B Mitchell Medium Bombers were launched from the Navy's USS Hornet deep in the Western Pacific Ocean. Title: Bismarck Sea Battle. U.S. and Australian planes take off to intercept a Japanese convoy. Battle of the Bismarck Sea. The Battle of the Bismarck Sea, March 2-4, 1943, took place in the South West Pacific Area during World War II when aircraft of the U.S. Fifth Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) attacked a Japanese convoy carrying troops to Lae, New Guinea. B25 Mitchell Bombers. Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses drop bombs. Low flying U.S. planes. Planes shoot at the Japanese. The Allies sunk every one of 24 Japanese ships. POV cockpit footage of ships on fire with thick, black smoke. A plane performs a slow victory roll past the camera. Airmen on the ground (6:21-9:07). End credits (9:08-9:12).
