I've seen combat footage of this mission and it was some of the best footage I've ever seen. Mosquito's flying at roof level is beautiful to watch. There were a few shots in here that looked just like that and it was glorious.

Great mission by Proper Charlie. Touching history lesson at the end, gave us an incite to the horrors of war. I can't imagine what the pilots must have gone through finding out about the school, let alone the families of all involved. Harrowing reminder. Bravo PC, great work.

The real Operation Carthage (which as noted was the Copenhagen raid) was a huge disaster in terms of collateral damage. Due to a variety of factors and errors, almost 150 civilians were killed (mostly children) at a nearby school. There is a Dutch movie (English title is the Bombardment) that is on Netflix about the raid.
@RossOneEyed2 жыл бұрын
excellent movie, even with the added "Hollywood" moments (the fore shadowing when he breaks the airplane, the love interest, etc).
@phunkeehone2 жыл бұрын
Despite the very tragic accident with the children, it wasn't a complete disaster. The raid destroyed gestapo archives and core members of the resistance managed to escape during the chaos. If it didn't happen, gestapo would deliver a devastating strike to the resistance in Copenhagen. It doesn't give a parent their child back, I know. But how cynical it may sound, it was necessary.

@Ryan Davies As tragic as it is, what would the result be if the raid didn't happen? Did England, Poland, France, Russia etc give up the fight due to civilian losses? What would happen, if they did? And it's not like the Mossie crews bombed the school deliberately. But I don't disagree with the fact that it was a horrible accident.

In the context of the time setting in 1945 I take the leader of the raid would be a well vetted and experienced pilot. Did you take this into account when organizing the flight structure n flight cnc in air? Considering pilot attrition what % of a mission raid flight would consist of inexperienced to experienced pilots? Would it be common for a flight to be disoriented over friendly air space? ( it would be more common over enemy air space with lack of partisan resistance assistance / clear geographical features / radio beam sensor orientation equipment in larger aircraft. ) Visual Line of Sight experienced pilots at the absolute minimum should be able to keep oriented on a flight leader even in radio equipment failure.
@richardvernon317 Жыл бұрын
The lead pilot and Navigator on the raid were two of the best in RAF 2nd Tactical Air Force. The AOC of 83 Group flew in as the number 2. Both, plus the 3rd crew to attack hit the lower part of the target. 4th Mosquito was flown by the CO of 21 Squadron RAF. He was newly posted into the unit and though an experienced Mosquito pilot with a Pathfinder tour behind him, was not an expert low flyer. He clipped a 30 feet high floodlight town in the city's rail yard that caused the aircraft to crash into a Garage complex next to the school. The last two Mosquitos in the first wave had to veer off to avoid the 4th aircraft and one of them failed to get his bombs on target (bombs hit the building behind the target). The Australians in the second wave of six mosquitos one minute behind had the smoke of the burning garage between the IP and the target, The SOP for the second and third wave was to bomb on the smoke, which was much greater from the burning Garage than from the target behind it. 4 Mosquitos from the second wave realised that the smoke wasn't from the correct target and aborted. 2 went home and the other two bombed the correct target. the other two aircraft of the second wave bombed the school. The third wave of six Mosquitos operated by the RNZAF, only one realised that the smoke was not from the target and aborted, the other five bombed the school. No Electronic radar and radio navigation was used, the whole mission being flown on the deck from the UK to the Target and back and in a Gale!!! Danish Resistance had provided excellent targeting information including up to date photographs of the Shellhus building from the direction of the IP. Germans had also painted the building in camouflage colours making it stand out like a sore thumb. 4 Mosquitos out of 20 and 2 Mustangs out of 30 were lost on the raid, plus one Mosquito did a belly landing the the home base. The aircraft lost were all hit by light flak (bar the one that hit the tower). All of the Flak over the target came from a German Cruiser in the harbour. They shot down a Mustang and badly damaged a mosquito that landed in the sea while trying to get to Sweden. Two Mosquitos were shot down by light flak as they exited Danish coast to the north and a Mustang belly landed due to battle damage just before crossing the Danish coast on the way home.

My pitch for a new mission is your client has been suffering heavy air-to-air losses due to their enemy that received a shipment of 6 new aircraft and AAMs. Your mission is to assault their heavily defended airbase and neutralize the defenses for a helicopter assault that will bring in pilots to steal the aircraft and the missiles reversing the balance of power in the region.

Cap, you grudgingly expressed the opinion that the Mustang was probably the best warbird of WWII. If you already know the following, then forgive me for boring you. However, if you don't already know, it may make you feel better about appreciating the Mustang if you knew that it was really a British airplane. North American designed the Mustang in response to a 1940 requirement from the British Purchasing Commission and the prototype first flew in September 1940. It originally had an Allison engine, but it wasn't until it got the Merlin that it really hit its stride. The US did not adopt the Mustang till later in the war.

Might be time to move away from any big Australian city. Thanks.
