Now that’s a low gear! Much like the granny gear in an old Willy’s jeep. I bet it could still crawl through the snow and slush while hauling a literal ton of scrap on the back. Such a loyal and very capable old workhorse!

My Dad, WW2, retold me a story many times about the famed.."Red Ball Express"..truckers and and trucks hauling supplies to assist the breakout from Normandy beaches...every time i see these old trucks i think of that true story..look it up folks..part of history that needs to be remembered..

What a beast. She crawled over the snow bank and through that wet snow practically at idle. I would love to see all your projects made roadworthy, but not necessarily restorations. Their Alaskafications are what give them their personality. I'd just like to see them buttoned up against the weather with glass to keep the snow out, , have the instrument panels rebuilt and the seats redone, then drive them in all their modified glory, but that's just me.

Hey Brother! They can't even come close to making them like this anymore. Goes to show that the more 'technology' they put into some things, the WORSE it gets! Thank you for showing things from back in the days of INTEGRITY!

Oh boy ! Taking the Studebaker out to get some exercise ! I don’t know how many US6 trucks we kept for ourselves during WWll as most went to lend lease to the USSR but it was every bit as strong as the chevys and gmc trucks . It had to be a real tough truck since the snow and mud had to be real tough in their war zone I would guess . This truck is a good runner and will no doubt serve you well . Won’t even need a Tera low gear set ! You sure did right by keeping it accessible in the event it’s called into service for a tow . Starts good and runs well . As good as a 4.0 liter jeep engine is for the long haul , can we say a 4.0 will serve its owner as long as these engines did ? I don’t know exactly which trucks were used on the Alaskan highway back then but I would think that at least some Studebaker trucks were on hand for work and travel . Sure would make a great commercial ; Studebaker trucks , built Alaskan tough ! See your Studebaker dealer today ! I wonder what would happen if Studebaker didn’t evolve into American motors . Would Studebaker have built the Jeep CJ5 ? Hmmm …..

Such an old sweetheart, been a fan since Alaska Trucker ended up with it. You made mention the DC3 specific tubes are hard to find, and I'm sure they are. Seems many are using 1200x20 tubes for those now(when not used on vintage aircraft), still common on forklifts, just in case that info helps. Cheers, from New Hampshire.

I"m 63 years old. When I was a kid my 1 buddy & i were totally into cars & trucks. We alway"s went to junk yards for our parts. Our favorite place was Kober"s junk yard.Montana mountain,Warren county NJ.It was a huge, sprawling, hilly place, was a junk yard since I think the 1930"s or so.The owner had 2 of those Studes, just like yours.Torches & tools in one,the other was a wrecker.Junkyard was totally organized by year & model. He"d take you out in one of these to get your stuff. The good old day"s.Old fashioned junk yard. You pull it or he"d help you.Even had a running firetruck with a hose in the pond, ready to go at all times. You brought back some great memories.

some say studebaker was ahead of its time, and allowed, per game theory, itself to be voted off the island, viz., out of the american car market. i happent to agree--in part. it's a case study worthy of the best, but such are probably confidential, etc. anyway, Austen has a reak keepsake to share.
