My kind of '49 Merc that isn't chopped, lowered, having horrible wheels on it or has a Chevy 350 stuffed into it. We know what James Dean saw when he drove his in "Rebel Without a Cause". And the gorgeous dash and original steering wheel. The owner is blessed to have this gem.

Absolutely right. I don't mind a modified car but when something is as stunning as this, why butcher it ? I run a stock 56 Chevy 4 door. I recently had a guy say "nice to see one on stock wheels, trims, etc, original 265 engine, unmolested". 👍

Gosh, what a beautiful car, congratulations! I still own the 49 Monarch (Canadian version of your Mercury) that I used to drive when I was in my 20s (62 now). Sadly not roadworthy for now and far from your beautiful coupe. Love it!

Really nice original. Rare. When did they bring out plastic seat covers? Video reminded me of Paul Newman doing Doc Hudson in the movie Cars. Little shaky but in character. Thanks for showing.

I was never able to understand why they needed to use a three piece rear window. The curve is so modest you would think they could have curved one piece of glass.

Did floor mats like that exist in 49? Looks aftermarket.
@thadwoodruff30442 жыл бұрын
Those floor mats are 100% original. They are very rare. Just exactly like the floor mat in the 1949 Mercury that I owned back in 1953.

Such a COOL ride! Chrysler (for Chrysler models only) copied the "window straps" in '51 (I owned a Windsor DeLuxe) Chrysler's much larger rear window worked BETTER for this "look"! The '49-51 Mercurys were MUCH BETTER for "the chopped look", though.

52,000 miles on a 49 is a lot of miles. It was unheard of, people didn't travel like today. Work, grocery store, bank, and, maybe a trip to a restaurant, if you were lucky. That was a big deal on Friday for us. And, the engine, transmission technology wasn't nowhere near as good. Not to mention oils. A good example is, my 1964 Homelite XL12 required a pint of 30wt motor oil per gallon of gas. They smoked like Crazy. Today, we put 2.4-3.2 ounces. 1.2 with one Oil. You could use half with motor oils today. And fuel. Fuel contaminated the crankcase oil a lot back then. Burnt valves was common, but seldom happens today. Cars produce almost 0 Emissions today. Which proves the electric cars is a hoax. It ends with us all walking, or a bike for the well off. A peddle bike, not electric.

With all due respect, having seen "original" survivors of all kinds, nobody is going to tell me this Merc is 'original'. Newer paint, newer redone interior, etc. A gorgeous car, but NOT 'original'.
@thadwoodruff30442 жыл бұрын
One repaint in its original color. The interior is absolutely 100% original. I bought the car in 2012 from the family of the original owner and it only had 52k miles, with documentation back to day one.

I also have a 1950s car with 154K miles (originally my father's car: 1956 Continental MKII). Still, 52K on a 1949 is almost impossible to believe ... something like 700 miles per year.
@thadwoodruff30442 жыл бұрын
@@ElectrologyNow This Mercury had a very interesting story. A couple bought the car originally. The wife never learned to drive and the husband had a company car, so this Mercury was literally only driven on Sundays. They had special ordered the Mercury and they kept all the paperwork so the car quite literally was documented back to day one. When the husband died in 1971, the Mercury had 47k miles. The wife subsequently kept the car in her garage for the next 20 years,. where it was kept covered with blankets. She had Triple A come out twice a year to service it and drive it around the block. When she died in 1991, her niece inherited the Mercury. The niece and her husband had the car repainted in 1992 in its original color. Other than the repaint, the car was virtually 100% original. It even still had its original factory spare tire. I bought the Mercury from them in 2012 and I kept it until 2021.
