This was her honoring "The Andrews Sisters," real life sisters who became famous back in the WWII area and their big hit from 1941 "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." (fun fact - Bette Midler did a rendition of it and it became a her first big hit in 1972, it peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and the person who did the production, was none other than Barry Manilow) her entire album back then called "Back To Basics" had current hits with a 1940s flare. Just as a reference, candyman was a slang term (especially in the early 1900s) that meant either a drug dealer or sugar daddy. Which why there's a lot of sexual references in the song. Especially in a time when it was frowned on for women to be promiscuous, it was a way for women to talk about the special men in their lives.

You hit the nail when you said it was peaceful despite the style evolving in wartime. That was intentional. WWII was so terrible and so hard the music industry was NEEDED for theraputic reasons and to keep morale from failing. Those men might have been blown to bits in a few days with zero expectations for going home until they beat the Axis. I adore what she did to modernize it.
