Went to game 2 of the series. Just 11 years old. Wonder how many of the crowd are still alive...

Excellent. I know the Yankee teams of the past pretty well, but I am surprised that I don't recall hearing of Johnny Hopp. I see he was a pretty fair hitter in his day (.296 lifetime batting average with very good OBP). Tell us more about your uncle sometime - he had a long career starting in the late 1930s.

Why this was a historic World Series: 1. It was the last one with no African American or colored players 2. It was Joe DiMaggio's last great season (led league in slugging) and he won Game 2 with a top of the tenth home run, the last homer of his career. 3. First time Phillies reached World Series Also, 1950 was the one season when the careers of manager Connie Mack and Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully coincided. Mack began as a major league catcher in 1886 and was Philadelphia Athletics manager from 1901 to 1950. Vin Scully was Brooklyn Dodger catcher starting in 1950. So Mack and Scully both were active in 1950, and involved in teams from the same cities but in the other league. Scully was a broadcaster until 2016. So from 1886 to 2016, either a Mack or Scully was active in major league baseball. Practically the entire history of MLB. And 1950 was the bridge year

Light hitting Jerry Coleman is the world Series MVP, every series championship for the Yanks seems to a guy you like that come up big when it counts, That is how you win 27 rings, The real heroes for the Yankees was their staring pitchers, maybe the best ever, that went 4-0 and only gave up 3 earned runs

Stengle won 5 straight WS with teams that were not demonstratibly better than the rest of the best teams in the AL. He knew how to manage and get the best out of ordinary players like Coleman.

Spaldeen - a new release on Amazon by an author I’ve been following for a couple of years. My dad used to tell me about the little ball he played stickball with in the Brooklyn neighborhood where he grew up. …A novel approach to storytelling, but I enjoyed it and flipped my copy to my dad. I think he’ll like it.
