You're not meant to eat regular Cheerios with sugar. It's supposed to be a heart-healthy/health conscious cereal in stark contrast to its sugar-laden competitors (which had sugar & marshmallows intentionally added to further entice children) & even its sister cereals (Honey Nut Cheerios [honey-flavored, with Buzz Bee as mascot] & Frosty-0's/Frosted Cheerios [Cheerios with a dusting of frosting, with Frosty the Super-Charged Polar Bear as mascot]). The healthy aspects of Cheerios were depicted in cartoony slapstick fashion, whereby The Cheerios Kid's (and later, his similarly drawn girlfriend Sue too, who went from rescued damsel-in-distress to equal tag team partner, thanks to the rise of "Girl Power" in the '80s) super strength came from consuming the otherwise bland cereal, much like how Popeye the Sailor becomes extra strong himself upon consuming spinach (whether canned or organically grown). Replicating the Popeye X Olive Oyl dynamic (except younger), Sue (who was originally just a nondescript background female character to start with) was obviously drawn to/enamored with The Cheerios Kid's chivalry despite the "go-go power" boost of unmatched super strength he got from Cheerios. Even though some viewers may have initially misinterpreted them as siblings due to the fact that they look near identically similar to each other in many of the commercials they appeared in together (specifically any from the ''50s all the way to the early '80s just before their character redesign that kind of mirrored Fred Moore's updates to both Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse in the 1940's by using squash & stretch techniques to give the cartoon characters realistic weight & body proportions despite their continued slapstick movements, on top of also rounding out their heads & torsos to make them appear cuter than they had ever been before), the fact that Sue kept trying to kiss Kid/get him to pay her some romantic affection or else, she immediately blushes after he had just got done rescuing her are meant to indicate that they (ala Mickey & Minnie too, given how Minnie's usually just seen as the female extension of/equivalent to Mickey, especially during their earliest years of existence from their 1928 debut on throughout the entire decade of the 1930's that followed) may look very much alike, but they're actually boyfriend & girlfriend.
