One more fact: General Mills originally called this cereal Cheerioats when it premiered in 1941, but in 1945,because of a trade name dispute with Quaker Oats Company, the cereal was renamed Cheerios.

I like how they animated Bullwinkle in the Cheerios commercials. Looks much more expressive that the show itself.

General Mills sponsored (and co-sponsored) MANY TV programs during the 1950's and '60s- most of which advertised Cheerios. Here's the breakdown of "integrated" commercials and the like: 1) "KING LEONARDO AND HIS SHORT SUBJECTS" (1960) 2) 1962 3) 1962 4) 1964 5) "THE BULLWINKLE SHOW" (1962) 6) 1964 7) "THE BULLWINKLE SHOW" (1962) 8) "THE BULLWINKLE SHOW" (1962) 9) 1964 10) 1964 11) "EMPIRE" (1962) [co-sponsored by Chrysler and General Mills] 12) 1965 13) 1964 14) "THE UNDERDOG SHOW" (1965) 15) 1965 16) 1965 17) 1965 18) 1965 19) 1965 20) 1965 21) 1965 22) 1968 23) "MISTER ED" (1965) 24) 1960 25) 1961 26) 1959 27) 1960 28) 1965 29) 1960 30) 1962 31) "LAWMAN" (1959) [co-sponsored by R.J. Reynolds and General Mills] 32) 1958 33) 1960 {Cliff Norton, announcer} 34) 1958 35) "THE LONE RANGER" (1959) 36) 1960 37) 1965 38) 1959 39) "ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS" {"Aesop & Son"} (1960) 40) 1961 41) "THE MUNSTERS" (1965) 42) 1960 [FrostyO's]

Too bad in the case of “39” that they couldn’t get Charles Ruggles for Aesop (of course Don Adams wasn’t available as Tennessee Tuxedo either in the Big G are). I assume this was a variation of the Cap’n Horatio Crunch voice.

Actually, it was Daws Butler doing his best "Charlie Ruggles" impression. His "Cap'n Crunch" voice was an impression of Charles Butterworth!

Jackson Beck is the voice of King Leonardo. And most of the Cheerios spots featured the Cheerios Kid and his girlfriend Sue. RIP, Alan Young and Paul Frees and Bill Scott and June Foray and Wally Cox. (The Captain O spot from 1962 was really a lame idea; I could see why General Mills stayed with the Cheerios Kid and Sue as heroic characters.)

I think "Captain O" was supposed to appeal to "older kids" and adults.

@@fromthesidelines Possibly. Presumably, General Mills tried this unsuccessful Superman parody of Captain O in 1962 was due to the fact that the Cheerios Kid was bailing his girlfriend Sue out of trouble each time he ate Cheerios, and that might have been a bore to some.
