Perhaps apocryphal, but an early NASCAR driver -- maybe "Fireball" Roberts -- was supposed to have explained that "understeer" was what happened when he hit the speedway wall with the front of his car, and "oversteer" happened when he hit the wall with the back of the car. Steering by throttle still sounds mighty fun.

Handsome Hudson Hornet. Hard to imagine it burning up the track. This'll sound weird, but I love the door click of a well-made car. How did cars of that era manage to pack so much more leg room and luggage space in the same length?
@clone42116 жыл бұрын
Its the Dashboard. Older cars from the early 50's had dashboards that were only 6-8" deep and the steeper windshield angle means you can sit closer to it while retaining adequate headroom. New cars sometimes feel like they have 2 foot deep dashboards which are chock full of electronics bulky plastic and the air conditioning ducts. The seats are also configured for a more upright dining room chair seating position in older cars which takes up less floor space than a reclined legs-out racecar position.
@stagger96606 жыл бұрын
These old cars are actually massive in comparison to cars today
@clone42116 жыл бұрын
Sort of. My 1950 Chevy, admittedly is smaller when compared to Hudsons and Cadillacs, is the exact same external dimensions as a 2010 Toyota Camry except the Chevy is 3" taller. You would be amazed at how much room is taken up by the pointless plastic trim in new cars.
@williestyle356 жыл бұрын
Kyle you are so right. So many newer cars have wasted space for the plastic trim and interior styling elements. So often when I sit in a new vehicle, the artificial built up hight of the console on the center tunnel is ridiculous and intrudes into my leg room.
@ollie426 жыл бұрын
Mostly these older cars are bigger than modern ones but on the inside newer cars have to conform to many more safety regulations so they pack them full of tech making cabin space smaller

My Dad and my Uncle Nelson owned Hudson's. My first experience at high speed in Dad's Hudson was before I could walk. Dad , Mom and I were on our way to Illinois when Dad blew a tire and took off across the California desert. Because it was so low the car didn't flip over and we all lived. My Uncle never used 2nd gear in his. 1st to 3rd for ever. I can still remember the "Star" on the end of the shift lever. I would stand on the front seat between my Mom and Dad.

Hudson's origial logo was a White Triangle, hence the name of the club magazine. BTW: The truck in the movie Grapes of Wrath is a 1927 Hudson. Later the triangle became red and symbolized Hudson, Essex and Terraplane. The money Hudson needed for a V8 or restyling was spent on their "compact" car the Hudson Jet. The Jet was not a marketing success. In a world today where a car company can lose a billion dollars, Hudson was effectively broke on $20 million in losses. They were originally to merge with Nash, Packard and Studebaker but that fell apart after the death of one of the principals of the merger. Instead they were moved from Jefferson Ave. Detroit to Kenosha, Wi. as part of Nash and forming American Motors.
@balconi896 жыл бұрын
Clarkecars lucky Studebaker wasn't part of that planned merger. With its debt load it would have buried them all.
@Clarkecars6 жыл бұрын
Ironically, I think Stude bailed because they feared the only interest in them was their V8 (which was a good engine).

Here's a quote from doc Hudson "when I finally got put together I went back expecting a big welcome, you know what they said, you're history moves right on to the next rookie standing in line. There was a lot left in me I never got a chance to show. I keep that, to remind me never to go back. I just never expected that that world would, would find me here".
@davidblalock99456 жыл бұрын
A v6 is less than a v8, but an inline 6 is *the King of Engine Layouts.* No engineering compromised, inherently balanced, and it will always have *more cylinder face per cubic inch* than a v8 with equal bore/stroke ratio, that means more torque and higher revs. Ford would be wise to develop a new gen of the mighty 300 straight 6 to turbo and put into the Raptor/f150, and as the base engine in the SuperDuty.
@TheFogLakeshore6 жыл бұрын
V16 is the king of 4-stroke engine layouts. Also, more cylinders per displacement = more valve area per displacement, plus more firing events per rotation = more low-end torque. V12 is a good workable compromise. But the inline 6 will always be a great layout. Virtually every class 8 truck has an inline 6 cyl 4-stroke diesel. The Ford 4.9l 300 is probably the greatest American gasoline straight-6. It just doesn't make the power modern people want. On a 3-on-the-tree Ford pickup, you drop down to 2nd, hold it to the floor, and she'll just chug along at 3000 rpm and pull anything over a hill... but that's not fast. You also never have to change the oil, filters, sparkplugs, tune the carb, or anything else... but you should. :D

Inherently balanced? I beg to differ and I have built more than a few 6s. Holden, Chev, Ford [Falcon 6 and 300 truck] and Mopar slant 6 and hemi 6. All make good hp but balance is never one of the better attributes when turned over about 5000 rpm. Shake off balancers, flywhhels and all the accescories such as alternators even engne mount bolts.

To help put into perspective just how powerful these Hudson Twin-H flathead 6's were, the 1951 model year was also when Chrysler introduced the hemi V-8. It was 331 c.i. with a 2-barrel carb that produced 180hp - and these Hudsons *beat 'em* . Coupe or sedan, I'd love to have one of these Twin-H Hornets from 1951-1954. And, though I may be wrong, starting in 1951, all Hudsons were available with GM's 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic tranny - with all that low-end power, these Hudson Hornets were just about the ultimate mile-gobbling road cars.
