In this video I give a full in depth tour of a 1952 Buick Riviera Super 8. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, This car was in it's original found condition and was such a treat to be able to check out. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

Had a '53 when I was a kid that I inherited from my dad. While all the other kids had new cars, I was driving an old Buick. Steering would wear you out parking it! But in general it was extremely tough and well made car that was fancier than most of the other GM cars in the 50s. The original upholstery was black with white trim, the black fabric had silver threads. Didn't last long but was very beautiful when new. The starter is in the accelerator pedal. You turn the ignition on with the key, and then press the accelerator. Boom, it starts. Very weird, but the Dynaflow transmission was very smooth and you couldn't feel any shifting while driving. The engine speed would whine when you took off, and then gradually slow down as you went faster. Thanks for the look at this car. Unfortunately, many of them are now in this condition and I'm sure parts are hard to find. The chrome problem was evident on all of them, (all chrome pieces got badly corroded, especially if you lived near the ocean) but the grill itself was stainless, so the "teeth" always seem to survive. The radio was tubes and had a "vibrator" AC power supply. Took awhile to warm up but sounded good, when it worked. The clocks on the old Buick's always broke but were beautiful. My first two cars were a '56 and a '53 Buick Special that I inherited. I'm now driving a C5 Corvette. Love your site. Keep up the good work.

Me! There were cars that did have some style in the '50s, but most of them were foreign, save the Corvette. Late in the fifties there were a few American cars that had a little style. The "55, " 56, "57 and"59 Chevrolets, the "57 and '58 Fords (including TBirds).

OK there you found another one of those ...off the side of the road (( just gotta check this one out)) mobiles. What a car. Those old Buicks were something else. The body is amazing for it's age and unrestored. Amazing how the top of the car windows and roof like was almost identical to Cadillac. I love how you look through every nook and cranney, when exploring these old treasures. I remember when as a kid some of those cars were still in use. We use to call those Dyanaflow transmissions street cleaners as they would expel so much exhaust when getting them to roll they would blow off the street. I cant believe the low gas mileage they got but gas was 15-20 cents gallon then. Thanks so much for sharing. You're a great kid.

Scores of great cars have been crushed by those "people". I don't understand how they can not realize that they can get a lot more money selling it than they can from the junk man. I guess they think if it isn't Japanese, it isn't fit for use.

I have a '53 Roadmaster Riviera sedan with very rare first-year factory A/C. Here's text of the placard I created for the public's information: 1953 was Buick’s 50th anniversary year, so the division pulled out all the stops both technically and stylistically. It ditched its old Straight Eight in favor of a shorter and lighter V-configured engine, introduced A/C as a $600 (!) option, and put the dazzling Skylark show car into limited production. The public snapped up a whopping 493,000 Buicks, good for a lifetime-best third place in the industry. This particular car was built in Buick’s Linden, NJ plant, late in the model year. Rivieras rode a 4” longer wheelbase than other Roadmasters, and were even better-appointed. Predictably, this car was loaded with factory goodies - PS, PB, A/T, radio, heater, clock, two-tone paint, backup lights, windshield washer, and more. In 1953 only about 1 in 240 U.S. cars -- including this one -- were given factory air. GM limited the installation of its clunky, expensive A/C units to Cadillacs and the highest-end Buicks and Olds models. Chilled air was generated at the front of the car, passed back to an evaporator in the trunk, then distributed under the headliner to outlets located above each seat. The rush to bring A/C to market was so great that GM engineers neglected to include a clutch for the compressor; thus, once your mechanic hooked up the unit’s special drive belt each spring, you had A/C - like it or not - until the following fall when the belt was removed. This quirk was corrected the next year. Buicks were the traditional choice of doctors, attorneys, and successful businessmen, and so this one must have been. Its sticker price (with options) was at least $4,800 - more than half of what a decent house in the suburbs cost! Evidence suggests that someone drove this car into midtown Manhattan at least once a week for a long time. I bought the car in Spring 2007, lightly vandalized in a lot on Staten Island, NY. I have since refreshed the engine, replaced both front doors and one battered fender, strengthened the floors, and totally overhauled the brake, ignition, and fuel systems, and given it a new headliner and door upholstery panels. The green-on-green paint scheme was year-available.

Holy COW I can't believe he found one of these. I have a 51 Buick Roadmaster sedan in my garage that's in about the same shape as this. I'd never seen one in person before and when I saw it at a swap meet I just had to have it. Great but little-known American classic.

You were supposed to adjust it so that you only had to give about half throttle. If you set it up to require flooring it, you open up the automatic choke, and on a super cold morning, you don't want to do that.

@bimjales I know where you're coming from. I'm driving a 13 year old truck that runs like new at 230,000 miles, but its cosmetically not perfect since it was and is used as a truck was designed to be. They sure don't make them like they used to though. I wager that any car made in the last 5 years WILL NOT last more than 200,000 miles without significant amounts of parts replaced. Everything in my truck is stock.
