I live (retired) in Spain - Costa del Sol. I met John Dodd on a number of occasions and only on one did he have the Beast with him. John was not a shy man as you will have gathered from the video, he loved all the attention and when he parked the beast he would open up the bonnet and small crowds would gather. The Spanish loved him and he symbolised the mad eccentric English man. We had a common interest in that many years ago I lived in London and built my own engines and I used the same engineering companies as John used. Anyway, John offered to give me a short drive in the Beast which I jumped at. This video accurately portrayed what I experienced. The Beast is very noisy and a bit frightening. the gearbox was so noisy as well, I think John managed to repair the step down before he passed away. Meeting John was interesting he had so much to say and getting your own chance to say anything wasn’t easy. Another car that John drove was a huge white 1960’s Rolls Royce in which he would floor the accelerator and spin one of the rear wheels. He was a character and would often ring up the local radio to offer his lengthy opinion! He is missed, but it’s great his car is in good hands , I’m sure he would have approved of the new look and return of the RR grill.

John Dodds rebuilt my dads 1968 jenson interceptors gearbox in the late 70's, and always the showman he had it delivered to santa pod during a race weekend by light aircraft(that used the strip during the lunch hour to land and take off) My dad was race director at the pod at the time. In period he had the speedo gears rebuilt so it massively over read, then would touch 200 mph for journalists (while doing a true 140mph) trust me the noise and vibration dulled your sensation of speed, so 140 mpg would have felt like 200mph. The body was built by a company called fibreglass repaires in bromley london Who just happened to be owned by Bob and Roy phelps who also owned santa pod from the late 1960 to the early 1990's.

I've had Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercedes-Benzes, Lexus, BMW, three Porsches, a Maserati, a Ferrari, and a Lamborghini. As a result, I have sadly become pretty jaded when it comes to looking at different cars. There really isn't much that impresses me. Having said that, I have just spent the last 20 minutes watching with a dumb smile on my face like an excited kid, and shaking my head over and over in complete amazement of "The Beast." This automobile is absolutely amazing! The styling would be hard to imagine unless you have seen it on video or in person. Then, it has a 27-liter V-12 engine from a WWII Spitfire airplane! It's just so crazy, yet so great at the same time! Then they topped it off with the grill from a Rolls-Royce. Simply unbelievable. This is the most absurd, yet at the same time magnificent thing I've seen in years! 🤣🤣🤣 I'd just like to say a huge "thank you" to Throttle House for posting this incredibly entertaining video! A V12 should be a smooth ride, that's why you use 12 cylinders, V6's aren't very balanced compared to a inline 6 (which a V12 is just two inline 6's side by side), but they're smaller and fit in to the engine well of an inline 4 chassis, you usually mount the engine on rubber and add heavier counter weights on the drive shaft reducing the torque to reduce vibration.

i would like to say cudos to Martin. That paintjob is classy and gorgeous the interiour looks really good as well. I hope he continues to drive it. I would probably do something about the steering and stall issue. You could probably change to a more modern gearbox but I'm torn if you would want to do that...nostalgia vs usability. It should be crazy, stupid, wonderfull all at once but sometimes a little bit easier helps you take the car and drive it more. This one should never rot in a garage, it must feel tarmac

Fun fact: The Rolls-Royce Meteor engine was so powerful that some of the members of test crews for the British Crusader and Cromwell cruiser tanks were injured during test drives. The engine had to have a limiter put on and the top speed of the tanks reduced so that the crew wouldn't be thrown about while driving. The tanks were able to go so fast, for the day, that the tank would de-track itself when turning at too high a speed. The Meteor would also go on to propel the Cold-War era Conqueror tank destroyer, which was a whopping 64 tons(71 short, 63 long). The Conqueror was able to go 35 km/h despite it's weight and size due to the Meteor M120 engine.

As a boy I loved the whole concept and philosophy behind the beast. Years later, worked in a shop that had an Allison V12 on a stand that we were playing with. A supercharged version. Always thought it would be amazing to put in a car. Funny video, but looks like the beast could use a front end upgrade. That excessive camber, and the sloppy steering wheel, along with the high steering effort and slow ratio, makes me think that a power rack and pinion, maybe electric, and some sorting on the coils and control arms might be a good idea. Or....maybe just leave it like it is and let it just be the beast.
@chaunceyfeatherstone62096 ай бұрын
I saw that too, and knew someone would comment on it. It makes me wonder why these guys didn't. Buddy was terrified, and rightly so. I thought you did a great job explaining the difference between the Meteor (Comet) and Merlin (Spitfire) engines and how the car has had both over the decades. It helps put the "That's not a Merlin!" debate to bed. Understanding the step-up gearbox uses straight-cut gears makes the clatter quite understandable and less alarming now too. Props to you and the new supervillain owner! 🤣🤣
