In the late 50's, early 60's, my family owed a 1953 Chrysler Imperial. It looked exactly like this car. Same color, same interior, same wide whitewall tires. It also had the hydraglide transmission. I was always fascinated that it had an automatic with a clutch. My older brother drove it for years. On one occasion he was racing someone on the freeway and at about 90 mph the engine started rattling badly. He drove it another 100 miles home. He and my father pulled one of the heads and found that it had swallowed a valve. Amazingly, even with the valve completely in the cylinder, the valve stem was only slightly bent and there was no damage to the head or the piston. They had a new valve installed (did a complete valve job while it was apart) put it back together and it ran perfectly again. I recall that when it was sold it went to the president of the local Chrysler car club. (Central California) I'm guessing the car is still around somewhere. Another tidbit; at some point my father bought new front shocks for it. The parts store was amused that it used the same shocks as the VW beetle.

I had one of these vehicles as well. You must have had the later model 1953 because in the year 1953, they changed from the fluid torque drive transmission (Which is what I had) to the transmission that you are talking about right now.

My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Archer, went to Detroit with her husband,. and drove their new 1955 Chevrolet Bel Aire off of the factory line. This 52 Chrysler is a piece of work. That car is beautiful. I was surprised by the 180 horsepower Firepower motor in that early a model.

My middle school teacher in 1968-69 was still driving her 52 Chrysler imperial to school every day. She had a 64 New Yorker at home. This was a upgrade Chrysler model. Hers was a lighter grey beige color that Chrysler used a lot in the early 50s , looks better in a darker color. My parents in 1952 ordered a new 52 Plymouth in California, they and my 2 older brothers took the train to Detroit and drove the new car home to northern California. It was pretty common back then because manufacturers charged bit more to transport the cars to the west coast.

Love that they went to the factory and drove it home. Can't imagine doing that with my Nissan Frontier. It says so much about American quality and loyalty at the time. Beautiful car -- so says the owner of a '52 Cadillac 60 Special. 16-9 sounds like a very reasonable price.

I had a 1950 Chrysler with a similar tranny. The low range had 2 speeds, 1 and 2. It shifted automatically between those 2. You had to use the clutch to get it into High range (3rd and 4th). It would automatically shift between 3 and 4, but you had to take your foot off the accelerator to initiate the shift. (Same thing with 1 & 2). It was reliable and easy.

Fluid Torque Drive because they added a torque converter to the earlier fluid drive, which needed manual downshifting for low gear. Then there was a version that required mashing the gas to access the under drive.

Very, very nice. Always thought the 51-52 Imp was a classy looker - shared the New Yorker wheelbase and bodies, but the clean side and skirts really gave it an understated elegance. There's one that appears at a car show local to me; never seems to draw much attention, but I think it's beautiful. Now, price. My base guess was going to be 12k, with a bump to 15k on condition. I might be light if indeed 'needs nothing', though there's a 53 Series 62 on offer at Hemmings for 16.5. Sadly, these are just not appreciated, and early fifties is a bit of a dead spot. Yet in 52 Chrysler was building quality (though the chrome has to have been done - Korean War chrome didn't hold up too well), and the more valueable today 57-58 models pale in comparison.

Fluid Torque Drive was an improvement over the older Fluid Drive system because it used a torque converter in place of the fluid coupling. The torque converter multiplies engine power. Combined with the 4 speed transmission, if you take off in Low and do a brake torque that big Hemi will take off in a way to scare you. Not that I recommend you try it. I had a 52 New Yorker with the same engine and very similar car. That year Chrysler was the first year for air conditioning. 1951 first year for power steering. Hemi engine, 4 speed automatic, torque converter, air, PS, PB, tinted glass, power windows. NO other car in the world had all the features of the big Imperial. No Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes, not even Rolls Royce.

@@richruksenas5992 I own a 1950 Dodge. You can drive it 60 or 65, provided you are not going uphill. However, the RPMs are far too high to be running at that speed for extended periods. And 60 really is not a safe speed in modern traffic. If I had the four speed Gyromatic rather than the three speed fluid drive, it might have been better. Plymouths, Chevrolets, Kaisers, and six cylinder Studes and Nashes have even less power than my Dodge.

@@seed_drill7135 Somewhat agree with you, but Studebaker V8s were capable, and several "cheaper makes" had light business coupes that didn't have to carry much weight. And Hudsons were screamers with a 6 cylinder engine, albeit it's a mid priced make. @mrdanforth3744
@mrdanforth3744 2 жыл бұрын
It is a 4 speed transmission. All normal driving is done in Hi range. Shift into Hi and take off in low gear of high range, when you get going 14MPH lift off the gas and the transmission shifts into high. The Lo range is for starting off on a steep hill, pulling a trailer or driving thru deep snow, sand or mud. In Lo range you start off in Low-low and shift up at 6 mph. Then if you want to go faster shift manually to Hi range. The torque converter plus Lo gear gives that big barge a really starling takeoff from rest if you rev it up against the brake and floor it. I had a 52 New Yorker which was next to the Imperial and mechanically identical and it surprised a lot of people the way it would take off.

Chrysler's top end car was marketed as Imperial from 1955 to 1966. All other production years they were CHRYSLER IMPERIAL, ie, from 1926 to 1955 as well as from 1967 to the end
