The ban on substitutes usually meant the match was ruined as a spectacle. 1953 - Eric Bell (Bolton) 1954 - no trouble 1955 - Jimmy Meadows (Man City; he never played again) 1956 - Bert Trautmann (Man City, who actually won the match; Trautmann's broken neck wasn't discovered till afterwards, but could have been fatal) 1957 - Ray Wood (Man Utd) 1958 - Harry Gregg (Man Utd, though he didn't have to go off) 1959 - Roy Dwight (Notts Forest - this evened up the game, which Forest were threatening to run away with completely; as it was they just held on for the win) 1960 - Billy Whelan (Blackburn Rovers) 1961- Len Chalmers (Leicester City)
