1953 - Watchtower Society's Orchestra conducted by Vernon Duncombe

The music at the "mega-conventions" through-out the 1950s and into the 1960s was provided by Jehovah's Witness volunteers and played outdoors. This recording contains specific arrangements a few of the then "Kingdom Songs" recorded live, outdoors (no studio) during the convention, and with standard recording equipment of the day. Not the clearest, but worth preserving and getting a sense of how it was way back then. The conductor was Vernon Duncombe. Here's the link to his life's story;.... www.jw.org/en/library/magazin... He was also the orchestra conductor for the orchestrated music on the record albums that were played while singing from the "pink" song books used from 1966 to 1983.

For many years, until the mid-1970s, large assemblies held concerts prior to public speaking. At times the audience sang spontaneously as the orchestra performed variations of kingdom melodies, Brother Duncombe, conductor of the 1953 Assembly orchestra, led the orchestra to the choir and the entire audience in song. New York newspapers of the time awarded him the direction of the largest choir in the world, some 123,000 people. Brother Duncombe is the one who appears in the final photo of the Jw Broadcasting channel's production titled "Our History in Motion - The Gift of Song, Part 2," raising his arms while Yankee Stadium is seen in the background.
