Amazing history behind this car! Lancia was truly an innovative manufacturer, and its engineers a bunch of crazy geniuses. That V8 is something else, what a sound.

This engine is a rather unusual 90 degree V8, acting as a stressed member long before that was more common. I wonder if that 90 degree configuration contributes to that incredible sound.

The car with the Italian Police escort is, I believe, one of two (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) surviving original Lancia D50. When the team got sold to Ferrari at the later part of 1955 season, Gianni Lancia kept two (?) cars, the rest went to Ferrari. The other cars in the video (the #14 and 17) were recreations built around many original components by a group of Italian Lancia enthusiasts from what I've read. The team managed to find original D50 engines in Italy (one of the engines they bought is still in its original delivery crate, with dyno tags!), and also a number of original D50 transaxles. They also have several original blueprints which helped them in recreating the cars. Hell, the constructor even has the contract of Alberto Ascari with Lancia as its works driver!

Hi Bozzy. As you know, I appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos, the highly detailed description, etc. Fantastic footage, man! These cars were absolute beasts and sound so magical. I have seen them at Goodwood FOS, but the other scenes were new to me. Watching these things on actual city streets puts things into perspective and somehow makes me realize how different and special they are. I really enjoyed the show, mate. Have a great weekend!

Hey Mick! Yep those "unseen" scenes are from the first edition of the Parco Valentino motor show in Turin in 2015 and that parade lap was a sort of Lancia D50's celebration. Believe or not but that car actually raced around those streets for the Gran Premio del Valentino. The race was held for 10 official times in alternate years and it was a non-valid race for the F1 championship (especially the 1952 and 1954 editions, since before 1950 the so called "F1 championship" didn't exist yet) but still an extra F1 event with the presence of famous drivers. The 1955 edition was won by Alberto Ascari with this Lancia D50. In any case those things simply sounds mental, love them. Thank you so much for the comment my friend! Wish you a lovely Sunday ;)

The car in the first and last part of the video is demonstrated there as it won the race it was entered at that very place, the Gran Premio del Valentino at the Valentino park, Turin. The car being demonstrated is an original example, owned by Lancia themselves, the other cars in the video (the one with the green nosecone and the one with race no 17) were all rebuilt from many available original bits, apparently.

is it Flat Plane crankshaft or Cross Plane Crankshaft?
@identiticrisis7 жыл бұрын
Cross-plane. Back then they thought its better balance would result in a smoother running engine; once engine speeds rose, crank torsion became an issue and the flat-plane was actually smoother. On one of the featured cars (the "Ferrari") you can also see evidence for the other drawback, namely in the individual exhaust pipes per cylinder. Flat-planes are a lot simpler to package and tune the exhaust for performance. Both Coventry Climax and BRM subsequently went through this same process in the early '60s.

Wasn't this car taken over by Ferrari in 1955 developed more as Lancia backed out of F1 after Ascari died in their Lancia D50. And Enzo of course re-named it Ferrari D50.

Yes, hence the Ferrari shields on some of the cars. And Ascari didn't die in a D50, he died after he crashed a Ferrari sports car in a test drive at Monza.

Why Lancia? if It has the cavallino on the chasis
@richardverney67026 жыл бұрын
This car was designed by Lancia and was well ahead of the competition. It is one of the great innovative Grand Prix cars with the fuel equally distributed in its panniers situated within the wheel base, which design also aided better aerodynamics. Unfortunately Lancia went bust before the car was fully developed (tyre design in particular was also a significant problem). Because it was the fasted car on the grid, the Italian Government insisted that it should be raced, and it was transferred to Ferrari together with Lancia's leading engineers/designers. FIAT provided Ferrari with the finance to race it, and the following year it won the world championship for Ferrari (not Lancia). Ferrari did not want to develop the car since it was not a Ferrari, and did not like running something better than a 'real' Ferrari, so it concentrated on creating a new vehicle. As a consequence the D50 never reached its full potential.
@jcgabriel15692 жыл бұрын
@@richardverney6702 no, they did develop the car the best they can, but the thing is, the regulations would ban alcohol-based fuel in 1958 in favour of Avgas, which proceeded to adversely affect all the engines that used to have alcohol fuels. This caused Ferrari to develop their F2 car, the 156 Dino, and give it a bigger engine, from 1.5 to 2.5L l, because the F2 class didn't use alcohol fuel anyway...
