After almost 6 years I was finally able to see again the white and blue Zitro Racing Porsche 917 (chassis 917-025) I recorded in Monza during a historic racing weekend. The track is still Monza but this time the event was a quiet and magic track day organized by Kuno Schaer, so I was able to better capture the sounds of the Flat-12. The car was driven by Peter Vögele.
I apologize for not having cut the warm up scenes that much but, understand me: one hour before I was getting out of bed and then my chest was shaking being behind that beast warming up. It made my day, and it was only 8.30 am.. Video on track starts at 3:39

Yeah, I can only imagine. It had to be a rush topping out at 248 mph before they put the chicanes in to "slow" things down. Think about how fast those distance signs to the right hander at Mulsanne must have flashed by! The guy is on the brakes and running down the gearbox and is hoping someone didn't mess up the corner so he can jump on the throttle and start back up the gearbox. And you hope it didn't just start raining and you still have your dry tires on. You are so right they are some pretty special people that drive that race. Be well and safe, peace to you and yours.

I completely *agree.* It is so damn annoying to hear some useless jabber when these beautiful, rare engines are singing. It's not only racing videos either.. A few days ago, I watched a video about tanks, and I can't remember what type it was (maybe a king Tiger) ..and there was actually audio of it running that was a few years after the war. It was color, and with a very decent recording.. trouble was, the narrator wouldn't shut up until the scene passed. Bad production. This is a great vid. The engine speaks for itself, and speaks well.

@@valeriotempesti3331 - The Mazda is too buzzy sounding for my likes, sounds more like a high performance weed wacker! I for one am glad those damn rotaries are gone as they were obnoxiously loud and very high pitched - very annoying for race fans to listen to for any length of time. That feeling was widespread so SCCA required a muffling system that was mandatory on the mix master Mazdas. The Porsche has a much more mechanical sound to it, almost harmonious and much nicer to listen to than the rotary engine.

The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe gets my nod for one of the best sounding engines as well as its achievement in capturing the World Manufacturer's Championship - the only American conceived and built vehicle to have done that.....to this very day! 🤠 🏆 🏁

When I was a little boy playing with my toy race cars, this is the sound I had in my head. In my opinion, it's the absolute essence of what a racing car should sound like and after 50 years it's still gives me goosebumps. I've been fortunate in my life to have owned some really great automobiles. 440 SIX PACK Challenger, 427 Corvette, GT350 Shelby, lots of Porsche 911's, BMW M3 and M5 but nothing a normal person can buy comes close to a Porsche 917. I still can't get that flat 12 sound out of my head and hopefully never will.

The thing about Porsche is that they've never been known for being the fastest cars, or particularly outstanding in any one specific category. They seem to be all about two things - class and perfect balance. They just drive so smoothly and feel like an extension of the driver's own body. I never quite got the value of that until the first time I drove an older 911. Most generally, I am a pony car and muscle car kinda guy that dabbles in old pickup trucks and vehicles with some oddities that amuse me like a VW Thing. I've never been much into brands or prestige or any of that. But there is something about a Porsche that commands respect in the fact that it's one of the few companies left that still puts a heavy focus on the experience the driver will have while operating it, while also making the vehicle a visual work of art. A friend of mine that used to work in the vintage racing circuit got me into Porsche, and I'll forever be grateful that he did. What a wonderful dream to chase.

The Mustang would plant you in the seat and keep you there up to 140, the Porsche? You had to be strapped in it was so tight in the twisties and stopped on a dime. Totally raw and amazing car! I miss it! Manual everything, total drivers car. Cornering was a little counterintuitive until you learned to use trailing throttle oversteer to your advantage, then lunch it and four wheel drift out of the corners like the rearend was mad at the frontend.

@@FlyinBrian777 And no sense of fear. A lot of good drivers feared the car and few had the nerve to hold it at anything above 180 initially and 200 subsequently. The two problems were the first cars could do 230+ yet couldn't easily handle it (talk to Ritchard Attwood). When they got the aero sorted the next prodlem was the Engine grenading itself. Derek Bell was one of the few to top out at 240+ yet to do so was within 100rpm (not much in a race car) of being wrote off with the car. The 917 was and is a brilliant car, but the almost cavalier nature of the beast and those who drove it really makes modern sports pale in comparison. The 917 was a car that was never tamed. You respected it and it respected you.

The greatest car ever made. Pedro Rodriguez's win in the 1970 1000 Km at Brands Hatch is still considered to be one of the greatest motor races of all time where, after having to pit after being black flagged, he went on to win by an astonishing five laps in pouring rain leading a Porche 1-2-3-4 victory. The banshee wail of its air-cooled flat twelve on full war cry is the most beautiful sounding engine ever. (The one here is being treated gently just like the fifty year old lady that she is).

Don't know why he shifts that slow? When gearbox is cold it might be a bit slow, but after some laps it should be as fast as anything. It might be just to be very gentle to it? For those who don't know: This gearbox is an unsynchronized 5 speed. This means the driver has to rev match on up and downshifts. This is why the upshifts take long (he has to wait for the rpm to fall down to the value after the shift) and downshift require extra throttle (he has to up the rpm to the value after the shift).

I have personally seen the 917 (it was the light blue, not gulf) during a endurance revival in Monza around 2010. I was standing right on the fence of the wood right on curva grande / biassono long and fast acceleration bend, and when it passed flat out upshifting was just incredible, you don’t forget

undeniably a great car, but that 1 second it takes to change gears IS pretty funny and defiantly adds to the shifting sound.

No matter which angle you look at it, it's glorious. And when it comes to life, you enter into mechanical Heaven. If there is ONE car I would love to have, it's that one. The Mother of all race cars.

Hi Bozzy.👋 I'm back to give this 917 another viewing and wanted to drop you a few lines. While this car is dated in some regards, it is so timeless... still a great design after all these years.😍 This beast debuted just before I did, and I can assure you this Porsche has aged much more gracefully than your commenter.😜 I'm so happy you got the opportunity to record it again after a 6 year wait. Also, I agree with you on the conditions being ideal with a fairly empty track, we get to hear that raw, lovely flat 12 perform its 'concerto da solista'.😉 What a day you had, from waking up early to having such a wicked, iconic machine thumping your chest on a cold start. If we could all be so fortunate to have such a real-world alarm clock. Never apologize for spending too much time in the pits or garage, Bozzy. These moments are priceless and probably more rare than the on-track footage listed online. Well done as always... I applaud you, sir.👏 Have a great day!

I can’t even describe how in love with all types of cars I have been since I can remember when I got my first hot wheel. I currently have a 530 horse mustang GT with a bunch of custom parts, but hearing the sound of this car is just glorious to say the least… the Savage raw power is adrenaline pumping it really gets me hyped up right after I heard it, I went out and drove my car… thank you. It truly was a pleasure to experience, especially on a 60 inch television with Bose sound…

More like orgasmic downshift than demonic! I really love the 917K, saw it a couple times at Spa and Nürburgring Classic races. It sounds even better irl
