I was three when my Country Doctor Dad bought our 1946 CJ-2A to get around on the southern Missouri horrible roads. I still have that Jeep and drive it all summer and what memories I have in it as my Mama taught me to drive in it and I taught my son in it as well. It is completely original being 6 Volts and having the original "Go Devil" engine and original horn, carburetor and everything else!!! Thanks for the video!

I'm an 0ld Geezer now...I remember most of these models of Jeep's real well. But, there was a couple I don't remember at all. The "Fork Lift" attachment and the last one the, "Cargo-Personal Carrier" I never seen these before. Back in the 50's & 60's we used to buy the old Army Jeeps in crates in KCMO Army Surplus for believe it or not for $100.00 and we would put them together and we would then sell them. Harley's motorcycles were just $75.00 back then in crates also. I liked this video.... = )

I have a 1969 CJ5 and a 1960 Wagon currently but I have owned a CJ2A and two CJ7s in the past since the early 1980s. They are all great vehicles but honestly my 2015 stock Rubicon 4 door is more capable on and off road. My favorite jeep is my 1969 CJ5 with factory Buick 225 odd fire. I owned the CJ2A for over 30 years. My 1977 CJ7 was a Levi Renegade. Even my wife’s 2014 4 door Sahara without lockers is more capable than any of my old ones. People who say the new needs are junk are simply not correct. I bought a new 1989 Wrangler. That was the weakest jeep I ever owned, but since then they have really improved the wranglers.

And then the Jeep grew (much like my fellow Americans waist lines) into a 4400lb hippo that couldn't go down a trail, with four doors, AC, automatic transmission, power steering and now optional 2 wheel drive the only thing jeep is the grill... and it's plastic I believe. Chrysler executives/designers if you are reading this why not make a CJ2a sized Jeep with a high torque four cylinder that isn't turbocharged, but a nice all around jeep, keep its weight under 2800lbs, and make it look like a working man's vehicle not some front driver derived 4x4 but a legit solid axle, high pinion, High/low transfer case and a lever to go from 2 wheel drive to four wheel drive? You can add all the luxury crap but make a nice small hard core 4x4. Make it small and reasonably priced maybe make everything an option like the good old days.

Chrysler threw the baby out with the bathwater. Our military alone, would still be a major user of the Jeep if only, the Jeep would just try to make a product for them. The MB and GPW was one of major vehicles that helped us win WWII

The main issue with that, is that the market for that has shifted over to ATV's mainly, if you see some of the larger ones like the John Deere gator or some of the ones made by Polaris, they are about the size of the CJ2, and they do sell, if anything, the market is a bit saturated.

In Loren Upton's 1977 "Roads End to Roads End" crossing of the Darien Gap, he utilized a 1977 Jeep CJ-7. Crew members included John Blake. Upton would later become the only recorded person to traverse the Darien Gap multiple times (and the only to cross it entirely on land, without the assistance of river ferries) when he crossed it in a 1966 Jeep CJ-5 from 1984 to 1987 on his last round-the-world attempt. Two other attempts to cross the Gap ended with Upton turning around and heading back to the United States. For the Jeep fanatics.

It couldn’t compete with a tractor, Turning circle was huge, not manuverable at the headlands when plowing, and the bodies rusted quickly. And too expensive. Looking around the landscape of America and it is still dotted with 40’s and 50’s Ford tractors. You are hard pressed to find an old Jeep. Funny to read the comments below. I just departed the Land Rover space and they all lament the same about Defenders. The Jeep ( then and now) is not the right tool for field work. You can never generate the traction needed for the plow and other implements because the tires are too small. Tractor tires are designed to generate tremendous leverage. We tried a 1 bottom trailer plow behind my Range Rover. Not a success and had to be rescued by the Oliver 55.

I could argue the 1980's CJ-7 was the high water mark . All these attatchments existed , but didn't really catch on . But as road going vehicles , to meet current safety standards , they'd be substantially similar to current Wranglers . And for purely agricultural and light duty commercial work , the roles have been taken over by ATV, UTV, and compact diesel tractors .

Sad that Jeep Corporation today is not pushing the utility services of these jeeps can still offer. There are still many applications that they could fill today. My dream job would be the president of Jeep, and get them back on firm footing, for why they were invented. I have restored 5 jeeps, and have a deep respect for their adaptability and capability.
@larrysmith6797
@larrysmith6797 6 жыл бұрын
Sad that you believe there is a Jeep Corporation today. There was Bantam, Willys-Overland, Kaiser, Kaiser-Jeep, American Motors Corporation, Chrysler and now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Jeep is now and always was a brand, not a company. Jeep is FCA's most successful brand. It does not need to get back on a firm footing.
@fk4515
@fk4515 6 жыл бұрын
You forgot Daimler-Chrysler and Jeep Corporation in the mix. There was a Jeep corporation it was formed from the assets that Kaiser-Jeep sold to AMC and was a wholly owned subsidy of AMC that eventually faded away. When I was stationed overseas we had a 2 1/2 ton (Deuce and a half), that data plate indicated it was produced by Jeep Corporation And you've ignored the legacy of AM General which was the Jeep military vehicle business that was spun off when Renault started buying AMC stock as at the time we didn't allow foreign ownership of defense contractors. Eventually AM General was purchased by GM. No company that owned Jeep has lasted more than 10 years after acquiring Jeep. I Bantam developed most of what became the Jeep, but Willys had a more powerful engine the Army liked and some of the officers charged with the decision preferred Ford as the manufacturer. American Bantam didn't have much production capacity so after the initial run of Bantam Reconnaissance Cars (BRC) the Army handed the design over to Willys, then contracted both Willys Overland and Ford to produce them. Many of the BRC cars used Willys chassis and engines with Bantam providing bodies, about half of them were shipped to England as Lend-Lease before we got involved in the war.

I wish they would make jeeps like this now. A Jeep now is nothing more then a glorified, overpriced, exaggerated soccer mom car. It’s not what it used to be. It’s all about creature comforts now. Just like my GMC Sierra. I had a 1987 K10, granted it’s half the horsepower and torque and the 4x4 system isn’t as good as my 2013 Sierra. It was a truck, meant for work. It has a/c but has manual windows and transfer case shifter. My 2013 is power everything. I just wish they would make options to order vehicles like this nowadays, order a truck or whatever that is specifically a work truck.
@filianablanxart8305
@filianablanxart8305 4 жыл бұрын
Well some ( mainstream ) trucks are made that way , primarily for Fleet sales . But not advertised to the public . and rarely ordered for dealer stocks . or usual distribution channels . If you look around for them, you'll see them used by construction companies , utilities , government fleets, etc . Think solid color, little or no chrome, crank windows, vinal seats, rubber floors , etc .

Plenty of them still around , albeit neither pristine , nor totally original . For several decades they have had enough enthusiast/ collector interest that they would usually get rebuilt/ upgraded instead of scrapped . But even 50 yrs ago , it was common for swaps of engines , transmission, transfer cases, and axles . Reproduction parts are available for all of them back to year zero The original '40s and '50s drivetrain specs weren't suited to more modern tastes of " serious " fourwheeling with lifted suspensions and large tires . When original components would fail , or be clearly outclassed , upgrading was normal .

@kgriffith16

Reliability, ride and handling. The off road capabilities of the CJ's and Wranglers give them some poor road manners, although the newer ones are significantly better. I have a 25 year old Wrangler and it's a beast to drive on the streets, yet it is one of the most fun vehicles I have ever owned.
