(Recorded on 4-6-23) Unfortunately, the rumors that these elevators have received a modernization job since Andrew (‪@DieselDucy‬) last visited this place in 2012 were true, and unlike the Schindler mod that happened around 2013 where only 1-2 elevators received a mod, all four elevators have been modernized heavily by Otis in 2022! This tower now houses apartments above the fourth floor, and I was fortunate to meet the property owner of this building who showed me the room for the firefighters.

I miss the original chime and button. The cab was absolutely gorgeous although the new elevators are nice.

Sad to see the Popouts gone but more intriguing that the first mod didn't even last a full decade before getting modded again

The first modernization job was done by Schindler (they only did two elevators back in 2013ish)...

I made a video several years ago and I gave Dieselducy permission to upload it. When it comes to modernizing an elevator, my detailing the elevator is really THE way to modernize an elevator. To make the elevator ADA compliant, all it takes is a reskinning of a panel and a saw to make a hole for the new set of what are really fabricated buttons. The modern font like we see here that would be applied to the buttons is called the "Arial" font. Some of the old buttons would have either the "Times New Roman" font or the "Impact" font. I think Otis might have been some of the first elevator brands to acquire the Arial font.

Nice elevators, and while it's really sad that the original elevators got modernized, this Otis modernization is way better than the Schindler replacement. I do think that Otis and higher quality, union supported third party companies do really well with modernizations. By the way, that F5 tornado that struck Downtown Lubbock (including the Metro Tower) was in 1970, and it's really amazing that a high-rise building could survive the brutal strength of that storm with 260 to 320 mile/hour winds.

Otis pretty much replaced EVERYTHING (yes, that does include a new motor) on this recent modernization... I definitely do agree that the Schindler mod job was done on the cheap side...

Although I am glad that they kept the original plate on the 20th floor of this building. Back then, many buildings would also identify their floors not only by number but also by the color painted on the door.

If I recall, the Schindler mod had innovation security buttons. Also I think this building in gonna be converted into condos/apartments or something

Yes, this building was converted into apartments- well, the majority of it (they were moving furniture and stuff when I was here)... The first three floors of this building house commercial amenities, tho.

I would say that they did a great job modernizing the elevators there! Kind of sad that the Westinghouses got modded. I mean they did have a very nice sounding bell!

I definitely wish the Pop Outs were never modded to begin with, but I will say having seen videos of these with the Schindler mod, this is a MASSIVE improvement over that! The fixtures and cabs looked so cheap with the Schindler mod, and they only modded 2 and left the other elevators here abandoned. While I'm usually against modding elevators multiple times and I definitely wish the originals were still here, I do definitely think this mod is a MASSIVE improvement both appearance and efficiency wise.

I agree with you 100%, and in doing a further research via the Texas Elevator Records, they were modernized in 2022 with a new GEN2 motor...
