I would still put a brace under the outside of the unit to reduce stress on the mounting hardware and window, a few pieces of scrap lumber are often enough to make an adequate support

Great job, beautiful unit. That sound reminds me of what refrigerators of that era and into the ‘60s sounded like. The first frost free refrigerators followed and the early models were particularly noisy.

This thing had a test run in the 20’s outside with the tstat jumpered out and never froze, this thing is insanely well made

Hey Russ, FYI, R12 refrigerant operates at a moderate pressure and a higher boiling point than R22. It was in common use from the mid-1930's. It was billed as the "safe refrigerant" since it is non-flammable. (R22 is also non-flammable) R22 came into common use in 1954 usually in ¾ hp compressors and up. Then it completely replaced R12 in use, except in automobiles. R12 and R22 cannot be mixed or interchanged in a system because of their different chemical properties and operating conditions. The "R" or "F" prefix can be interchanged. Dupont who invented these refrigerants used the trade name Freon®, which is what the "F" stands for.

For awhile i thought all units with the Frigidaire Meter Miser and Tecumseh S Series were R-12. I have since been proven incorrect.

Beautiful machine sir! Outstanding work. I would aim to at least make my machine 1/4 as nice as you do yours and I would be happy. I love how old machines have grilles over the condenser so they don't get bent over. Seems so simple, yet nobody does it anymore. The outer case may not be 100% cosmetically perfect, but that machine will be good for another 60 years!

Brilliant machine,you can't beat an 1800 rpm compressor,R 12 and R 22 can carry much more heat than modern refrigerants.

R-12 and R-22 actually have done of the lowest latent heat of fusion, so you gotta pump a lot more weight of it around. Propane and butane are as good with under half the refridgerant weight needed, but it is flammable - DuPont lobbied against its use when they came out with R-11 and R-12, but what's old is new again. Ammonia is a stupidly good refridgerant with like 6x the phase change energy as R-12, but it corrodes copper, is toxic, and flammable, so they only use it for industrial these days.

Your restoration looks great! The decals your wife made look fantastic! FYI, the original 1955 Fedders decal on the outside cabinet was a graphic of the weather wheel with the Fedders name kind of blowing out of it.

Another observation: you MAY find an old Carrier unit with a tag saying "Carrene 5, or 7" Apparently They had their own refrigerant numbering system way back....I think Carrene 7 was R-500.

Wow, I didn't know there were compressors this quiet back then. Growing up, we had an old 10,000 BTU GE window unit that dimmed the lights everything the compressor kicked on, it was from the 70s and it wasn't a quiet unit. I wonder what the starting and running Amps for this Fedders unit ?

Beautiful unit! Your restorations always come out amazing. That unit is so quiet. It's hard to imagine just how far these machines have regressed since the 70s and 80s, and even those units were not anywhere near as quiet as this one. The Tecumseh S series is a really quiet compressor. I honestly prefer the sound of the AE or the AJ, but there's no question the S is an extremely well made compressor that will absolutely outlive any modern rotary.

Great restoration job! It's too bad they have one of those stamped-metal baseboard heating units: those things are so noisy when the hot water first flows into them. The cast-iron types are nice and quiet.

Dang that thing runs smooth. Very quiet. Fedders did something right when they made these. Seems to be more 50s fedders then anything else. Shows you how the quality is. Not saying that other 50s units weren’t good but there always seems to be more 50s fedders than any other brand. I think also the fedders units were more budget friendly back in the day compared to other brands but when you bought one you most certainly got your moneys worth. The thing is still working 67 years later. Been noticing on Facebook market place that the old units seem to be selling more than the new units. Probably because people are realizing the new ones are junk.

Im just glad more people that get rid of them are listing them instead of scrapping them right away. There still thousands of them out there yet. Im hoping to find the larger version sometime! Fedders are awesome and they did sell the most by far. They were all good back then tho!

I need to find something like this. It looks like it would actually fit into my window! As much as I really want to use my Philco Noisless once I get it stabilized, it is way too wide for my window. As of not I am stuck with a 1980s whirlpool which runs great but even on low the fan is loud as hell and does not move much air. That runs so very smooth and is just beautiful sir.

Just discovered your channel. Love all the videos. What do you do with all the units you rescue and do up, sell them on or donate? They are in great condition when you've done them up. Also when you spray the electric motors down isn't that a risk to the internals of the motor. Why is this compressor so quiet is it a diff compressor to those units on units now?

I usually give them to people i know. Every now and again ill sell some. I usually keep anything from the 1950’s for my personal collection. To answer your question about the motors, yes and no. Yes if you try to run it before it dries out. No if you wait 24 hours. Usually less but to be safe i wait 24 hours to fire it up and also i check with a meter for grounds. If your motor is wet chances are you will have a reading from the fan leads to ground. The compressor in this Fedders is the famous Tecumseh S series. They stopped making it in 1958 unfortunately. 1725 RPM compressors...love 'em. Lennox made a two speed condenser unit.....1725/3450....in low stage, they just purred. I find these videos interesting, as I grew up in that era. Perhaps I was just born to work on air conditioning...nearly 50 years of it! I particularly love the Carlyle 06 series compressor in large units....semi-hermetics are all 1725 rpm, but move over...Scrolls, screws are more "efficient." Get outta here. I'm noticing rotaries are making a big comback with variable speed tech moving forward. I'm ready to retire....tired of watching them re-invent the wheel! And please tell me WHY CAN'T WE MAKE A DECENT CAPACITOR???!!!

On worst possibly conditions, this unit draws 7.5 amps. It runs on 110v. 110 x 7.5 = 825 Watts under worst conditions. Its a 6000 BTU unit, so 6000 divided by 825 is 7.27 giving this unit an EER Rating of 7.27. Now remember, this is under worst conditions. Id be willing to bet normal circumstances would be about 5.5-6 amps. On a cool night maybe even less.
