Great to see an update, love watching your progress on this truck 👍

Thanks Matt! This has been a very slow year for my truck, I just can't get the parts I need up my way. If I can just source a transmission to get my driveline lined up then I can move ahead with everything else. Work has been busy too, but it's hard to complain about having good work in these times!

What transmission do you need.

@@tayloringham691 an NV4500 with a Chevy bellhousing. I need it for the weight rating and O/D gear. At this point though, I've been waiting over a year for one and I may just end up putting a light duty trans that I know may not last just so I can move forward

Hey Paul, nice to see you're still around! I've got a bit of help sourcing brake parts now, so I'm thinking things may move ahead pretty soon on that

Send the shoes off to be re-lined. If you can't find drums you may be able to have liners installed. Some Buick drums in the 60's were aluminum with cast iron liners so it should be able to be done. If that not cost effective you might find some rotors off a newer truck and make your own caliper brackets to convert to disc. Most old farm trucks don't have brakes because of this lack of parts availability... Good luck
@RustRehab3 жыл бұрын
I've had a bit of luck recently with my brakes actually, looks like my drums might be in better shape than I thought. I also managed to pick up wheel cylinders brand new. Getting my shoes relined sounds like the way to go, I just have to find a spot to do it!

I'll be working on an r120 international hopefully within the next year. Your videos are sure to be helpful. (17 and have no experience yet in this type of work)

Great video Bennett! 😀👍 I'm glad to see the epoxy held back the rust. I'm an expert by *no* means, but you're fine putting body filler on bare metal. Thats usually how it's done. Glad you found a big block. Can't wait for more 😎. I hope you and your misses are doing well. Take care 🔧

I can't overstate how anxious I was at the state of that primer when I removed the tarp. Im very glad it worked out. I think that had I been a better painter I probably would have ended up with even less, but I'll take what I can get! Can't wait to see more progress on your internationals!

Save your original brake shoes. There are many places that will relive them at a reasonable cost. Good kick.

Good timing, I am actually working on the brakes now. Seems like they are good enough for right now, but they might need to be relined before it receives its first inspection. Progress has stopped however while I recover from a hand injury, but I hope to be at it again soon!

Cool that it’s still in primer like that. I just put a modern dual circuit master cylinder and booster on my ‘53 R-162. Much better than the under the floor and I found a pedal bracket that fits like it was designed by IH engineers for these trucks!
@RustRehab3 жыл бұрын
Really? Do you have a link or contact for those? I had just planned on replacing mine with the original parts, but if you find yours performs better then I'd love to try it. Even with new parts, old brakes on big trucks are still kind of lacking.

I used a GM 1.25” bore master cylinder because it matches the stock bore on my truck. Check your old master cylinder bore. My remote booster was unhooked and abandoned long ago so I’m going to try this 7” booster. I’ll let you know how it works when I get the lines plumbed.

You can search for the right brake shoes by using the diameter of your drum and width of stopping surface. That’s what I did for the fronts and rears (51 L-150) and they installed correctly. Still searching for new hub/brake drum, or a safe way to refurbish them. Fronts were 33APG Rears were 109PG
@RustRehab3 жыл бұрын
Perfect, I may give that a shot. I was thinking I might be able to have the pads reapplied to the backers, but I'm not sure if anyone does that anymore. As for the drums, I think short of replacing the whole assembly with a more modern one by switching an axel, it might come down to having some custom one turned. If I sell my house, I could probably afford at least the front set :D

@@RustRehab hey I ended up getting my old brake shoes relined at Edmonton brake and clutch was like 40$ per shoe. How is this project going ?? I completely my L-150 this summer she’s back on the road now. I’m going to be starting my RF-190 this summer hopefully I can at least get it running and moving.

@@blairleonard3300 glad to hear it! I'm going to save their website in my phone. I replaced all the brake cylinders on mine, some of my shoes will need work too. I also broke down and bought a transmission the other week, it's not the one I wanted (no over drive) but at least it's something I can move foreword with now

IF all goes to plan, I should have a chev 454 as a motor, which I have already, and an NV4500 for a trans. Hard part has been finding that trans, I'm considering other options now that might involve having a bellhousing adapter made up. Can't believe how hard it has been to find a 5 speed up this way

Before you get to far your going to want split them frames and fix that frame jacking from rust. That is a double frame and should be fixed before you get to far ahead. if you do not know what that is there plenty videos out there on that. Not sure if you done already but just a heads up
@RustRehab2 жыл бұрын
You're 100% right about that. Its way out of my weight class to deal with that I think, I can't imangine there being a diy fix for rust jacking on the double frame. Because the frame. Is only jacked starting behind the cab, I was planning on bringing into a shop for them to deal with after I get it running and driving under its own power, but before I toss a bed on it. That might be the wrong move though. The double frame was an option on this rig, but I don't want to lose it if I don't have to. If you know of any tricks or best practices for that sort of thing, I'm all ears for sure!
@donvindicare65172 жыл бұрын
@@RustRehab Im not sure where your at on that build see the video was pretty old. I guess all depends on how much money you want to soak into it. The proper way to fix it can get mighty expensive. Like said frames need to be split and rust damage fixed. Their are cheaper ways but they do not last and it just ends up damaging the frame even more. Because you can not get all the rust between frames out with out splitting them and fixing the damage already done. There are plenty videos out there on how to fix it all depends on how much money you have to throw at it. If i remember right Deboss garage had good one on it

I enjoyed the video. I will keep watching and see the progress you make. I remember that you live in Canada, can't remember where. I told you about another guy I have been watching for about 6 months now. He redid one of these old International trucks as well. He also lives in Canada, Manitoba I think. I know Canada is a big country but on the off chance he is close enough, maybe he could help you out with some tips and/or pointers. His name is Brent. Check him and his truck (well more than half done in this vid) out and shoot him a note. Keep up the work. I will be watching from Texas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWjOZ5Smp8ukgJY

Thanks for stopping by! I actually follow Brent already on KZbin, I don't get to see quite everything as it comes out, but his 4 door build is amazing. Unfortunately Manitoba is a few days away from me, but he's still a great source of inspiration. The sky is the limit for him for sure
