I've mentioned this before, when I was real young, my family friend had his baby, it was a 53 Olds 98 Coupe. For some reason I always loved the sounds and feels of the old Hydramatic transmission. Some times when you drive the Caddy it makes those same sounds and today was one of those days. Music to my ears, hope you keep her running forever.

Ben...when I was a toddler we had a 1958 Coupe De Ville, just called my 88 year old Mom who confirms the switch on the floor is for the Wonderbar. They got the car in about 1960, Dad traded their 1952 MG TD to a local judge for it. Apparently, as a toddler, she had me convinced she could wiggle her finger and the radio would go into seek mode, which apparently fascinated me. The car was her daily driver for many years, and that distinct Hydromatic whine is something I do remember. Wish you were closer I would trade you a ride in my 40 Ford for a ride for my Mom in the Caddy. She would love it.
@johnfranklin52774 жыл бұрын
Wow, we have something in common. My parents bought a 58 caddy in 1960 from a doctor friend of theirs. I was 1. Series 62 sedan with factory AC and power windows. Lifelong southern California desert area car. Unfortunately after 20 years of marriage, my parents divorced in 1963. Mom got the house and the caddy. I grew up with this car. And my mom signed it over to me in 1982. I'm still driving it. And yes all the hydramatic transmissions whine, this car always did, and 6 years ago the transmission had its 1st rebuild, seals leaking like a sieve, And still whines the same. I know Ben thinks it's not supposed to. But they did that from brand new. My caddy is silver interior. And dark gray metallic exterior, called PRESTWICK GRAY. Be great if you like to tell me about yours.

Hi Ben I had the same problem with fuel return on my "58 s , so I fitted a rubber hand primer into the fuel line , so if not been running for a while just give it a few pumps on primer and fitted a clear fuel filter so you can see the you have fuel and it starts straight away rather than abusing starter to lift fuel all the way to the carb,

Ben does this car have a transmission vacuum modulator ? A bad modulator can pull trans fluid out of the trans to the carburetor.
@SteveReevesvlogs4 жыл бұрын
Years ago I bought an old Buick Lesabre the previous owner had swapped the transmission and the car started to smoke real bad shortly after. He had thought the rings had given out and gave up on it. I bought the car for scrap price and when I checked the compression all was good. Turned out when the Transmission was changed the modulator diaphragm was leaky and it was sucking transmission fluid through the vacuum line. Put in a new modulator valve no more smoke.

That button is for the radio - kind of a search function. It makes the station indicator motor across the radio dial - if it works...

Loving that old iron! Reminds of when I was in college in the 60s and I worked for a used car lot as a general roustabout doing mechanical, detailing and title work. We'd run across the occasional Ford and GM car with automatic transmissions that would blow white smoke out the tail pipes. Discovered checking the trans fluid that it would be down sometimes a quart. Turned out to be that vintage of cars used a vacuum modulator valve on the transmissions for shift timing. When that vacuum valve went bad it would suck trans fluid into the engine via the vacuum hose. Once the fluid got below the level of the valve the smoke stopped. Top off the fluid, smoke happened until the fluid dropped again. You mentioned your Caddy's vacuum check valve for the accessories, that may be the similar cause not knowing that age of GM if they had modulator valves on the auto trans. Also, If your brake shoes are fairly new, wouldn't running them in cause the fluid to drop as the shoes became seated with the drums? Making that white smoke another source. I know, too many variables.

Add a "T" Fitting to the vacuum line from the brake booster with the line pointing down and plugged. If you have a leak in the master cylinder fluid will collect in the bottom of the fitting.

Have you considered milling your exhaust manifold? Exhaust ports on heads can be checked while exhaust manifold is off. All necessary is to remove manifold and check with a perfect straight edge across all ports on exhaust manifold. I had to do it on one engine. It stopped the leaking. Only a thought.

Take a dollar bill and when the door is open stick it between the weather stripping and close the door. If you can pull the bill out with no resistance the two weather strips aren't touching. Check it in a few different places. Since it's a Cadillac, a $100 bill might work better. Keep the old cable, the inner cable makes an excellent plumbing snake to clear drains, just chuck it in a drill and go to town.

Floor mounted wonderbar radio station switch. I had a friend in high school that had a '58 Lincoln Continental that had the same setup and also the same Bendix Treadle Vac brake booster. We rebuilt that a couple of times because the diaphragms would go bad and 45 years ago all you could get was new/old stock that had been sitting around for 20 years and wasn't the best. If you think the master cylinder might be leaking take it off and see if the fluid is wet around the push rod that goes into the booster, you might just need to rebuild or replace the master cylinder.

I had. 53 Caddy as a first car. $65 out the door. It had hydroelectric windows that leaked brake fluid. Sometimes in the winter I would accidentally hit the down button (which always worked) and then freeze to death until I bought more brake fluid to put the window up again. Why didn’t I fix it? I was always broke at 16. I wish I had that ride now. Love your videos. ☮️👍

It looks like the top of your driver's door has gone out of line over the years of people slamming the door. With it having frameless doors being a hardtop then you should be able to adjust the window runners inside the door to move the top of the window in towards the roof which will make a big difference to the wind noise... That's one of the things with old vehicles, you fix one noise and another few show up...

So many people want to talk to me about the car when I take it out around town. when I say new paint is on the to do list, about 10 percent say, oh no, leave it this way, lovely patina!!I I think these must be the people with 7 or 8 year old cars who's paint has gone bad, and never repaint them. Hey Ben! Love the caddy videos! If you have not taken apart that speedo head and lubed it, I really think you should. I can see replacing the cable really helped, but I know how long you have had the car, and just think it should probably be lubed as a precaution. If that siezes, it can make a mess and cause a really significant trans fluid leak. Noticed that you have a stock charging system. I recently replaced the internally regulated alternator with a delco generator and NOS delco voltage regulator. Now my gen light comes on at idle. I think the 56 I drove in HS did the same thing, but was just wandering if the caddy does that as well. Not too familiar with the VR. I know there is an adjustment that can be made.

Is your carb running a little rich causing the white smoke at times? Also, on your front passenger side near the top of the wing window you pointed out. I'm fairly certain there is a small hard rubber seal that screws into that hole you referred to, designed to cut wind noise. Too, on the old cars I sometimes found it successful to pull the speedometer inner cable out at the transmission and in those days lubed the cable with graphite and hopefully managed to get it to insert again at the speedometer without having to pull it loose at the dash. The lube fix worked sometimes, other times the inside of the outer cable was just too gucked up and needed reaming. You too, mentioned lubing it but for some bucks and a bit more work you actually did it much more good. Well done. Enjoy your vids and your car knowledge. And thanks for all of your uploads...

Don't beat yourself up too much ("It's all my fault") re: not giving it enough exercise. Until you came along, it had not been getting ANY exercise for many a moon. Re: your speedometer, I had a 1960 Cadillac 4 door flattop in which the speedometer did not work. I found out that it was not the speedo cable, but the speedometer itself that was faulty. Re: the exhaust, if you tear it all apart to fix that leak, while you are at it, perhaps convert the rear exhaust to conventional tailpipes so that your rear bumper doesn't get all rotted out. When I was a kid, I remember seeing so many of those '50's cars with cool looking bumper exhaust (when new) looking NOT so cool in the '60's from being rotted out. That's why bumper exhaust was discontinued.

Washer fluid pump actuator , or some older wonder bar radios had a foot controlled station changing feature.
@tallboots14 жыл бұрын
My "educated" guess on the extra foot button is either it activates the radio tuner or the windshield washers. I have a 1948 chevrolet fleetline and it has the washer jar. I believe to activate the windshield washer there is a button on the floorboard that supplies vacuum to the washer system.

Oh well, others beat me to the punch but I'll say it anyway. You can change the radio station with it. I knew that because my grandparents had a 1954 Cadillac Series 62 4 door sedan. It was pretty basic. No power windows, seats or any of the typical Cadillac options. It did have the Autronic Eye which was mounted on the dash to the left of the driver. It would dim the headlights when an approaching car got within some distance, then back to bright lights when they passed. I thought it was neat that the year of the car was on the dashboard in front of the passenger. The padded dash looked like stitches leather and the gas filler was in the left taillight. Great car and very quiet. You couldn't tell when it was idling, it was that quiet. Must of been a thing back in the 50's. The scene when Lucy is trying to teach Ethel how to drive the new Pontiac, Lucy tells Ethel the car is running and Ethel says no it's not. Ok step in the gas which she does and hits the old Cadillac Fred bought earlier.
