1956 Cat No.12 Grader - how many grease fittings?

We had a CAT 14-D Road Grader. I responsible for oils, greasing and service. My father was expert as an operator. There was 128 Grease fittings on it and it did not have the front scarifier. It did have a push block on the front and we occasionally pushed our 5 scraper wagons [Pans] with it.

Hi, Nathan. Without watching your video, I'm gonna say 104. I've been around them once - or maybe twice. I made it to 98 just from memory - and that memory is from 1978, the last time I operated wunna them. I have NEVER used a locking coupler - never needed one. I always try to use MacNaught couplers which, when you know the trick, are adjustable for wear. Just my 0.02. You have a wonderful day. best wishes. Deas Plant.

I definitely missed a couple that I found in the service manual after I got back home - I’ll get em next time. I’ve never used a coupler before but they sent me one for free to try out so did my due diligence- Thanks for watching

Thanks for making this video. I recently bought a 1954 Caterpillar 212 grader - the little brother to your 12 and I'm going to have to hunt all of those grease nipples down myself soon! That was an education to watch.

😱 thanks for your time and video. 😁. I need to grease my No.12 8T before winter, I don't think I'll make it this year🥺 before snow flies. The frost has already started leaching itself across the windshields over night and the trees have shed their yellowed leaves to lay down yet another bed. The blades of grass gives way to the fresh deposits of snow's flakes and cold. The penumbra of winter veils itself once again. The crunch underneath each step crescendos to a defining white. Unfurling the truth that not only fall has fallen but that 'winter is here'.

Hey Zane yes There was definitely a lot of pre-work maintenance needed on the old gal, I even missed about 9 or so grease fittings. It is a fair product I’ve used it a few times more since I did the video. Hope you are getting some projects done at your place. Take care buddy, and happy wrenching.

My dad and uncle made the first electric start conversion for the CAT 12 once cat saw it they made there own 2 years later too sell .

On the bottom of the main drive articulation going into the chain drive carriage is two that get missed often.

I had the same problem with a different brand of locking grease gun fitting. Rather then hunt for another gun or change the gun fitting, I solved the problem by screwing a grease nipple in the hose end of a standard press on gun fitting. Then just install it on the end of the locking fitting when needed.

I have a 1970 model 120,never counted the nipples,thought I got them all till I had a flat on one of the tandems and while crawling underneath to jack it up I noticed I missed the 2 on the tandem pivot, dammit

Your lucky it dont have scarfiers you would have about 8 more I think. I cut my teeth on old Cat graders, my favorite is the 99E, I have opperated G models but the 99E is still my favorite.

that is a shit load of fittings! You might be able to thread a 1/8" fitting into the standard couple and use that for the fittings that you can't get with the Saker.

It was there the video would be three times as long if I videoed every joint squirting out grease. Also as soon as I hear air purging from the joint I stop pumping, the grease finds its way through without pumping a bunch out to make a mess.
