Fond Memories of the Philly Mummers. Great music, artists, costumers. Plus the sentiment of nostalgia. My home town

My brother and I went "up the street" in 1956 with the Hammond Comic Club. Then we'd do the real fun parade on "2 Street". The different captains of the Mummers clubs would present a dozen roses to the Mother Superior of Mt. Carmel Parish's convent. Some of the best years of this 78 year old's life.

I was sixteen and always watched the parade on tv even though it was in B&W. Thanks for taking me back to another time.

I remember watching the Mummers Parade on TV with my Mom on New Years' Day. How they fascinated me and I loved those banjos! Not the same now. I appreciate this video of the Mummers as I remember them. Old time. Rose of Washington Square!

My mom kept a book on her lap and kept her own score sheet. She'd verite down the themes and the music and costume colors. She SO loved the String Bands. I tried to pass that on to my kids but my hubby was a ¥§∆√¥€¢£§ in English a jerk.

When I was a kid in Williamsport back then, this is what we would see on TV. I still love the Mummers. As someone posted, the banjos were it back then, not the saxes.

My very first mummers parade attendance. Pop was a LT PPD & stopped by - sitting in one of those old time cycle side cars - where my mom & siblings watched from west side of Spruce Street, very near this vid’s vantage point. Only part of the mummers i liked was - & still is - the string bands, though to-day they have more horns (saxes, it seems) than strings [(banjos, violins & upright double-basses (which was impressive the dudes marched playing back then)]. The embedded old timey mummers music is sweeeeeet. Thanks for sharing.

This is how I remember mummers. I can really hear the banjos with sax accompaniment...but I love the suits of today!

What a fantastic video. My Father and Grandfather was a member of Quaker City. My Dad played the saxophone, my Grandfather played banjo. I have a photo of my Dad in that costume but never thought I would see them on film. thank you!

If any of these bands are Polish American, my dad was a 16 year old Accordion player. He marched from 1955-1991.

Thanks for posting this Russ, both my parents were "Two Streeters" . I one grandmother lived at 2nd and McKean which means I spent countless New Years Days standing outside Quaker City's club house. So many memories!

I like the sound of the old mummers bands. I like the dominite sound of the strumming banjos without the drums. Also I like to here complete songs without all the silly sax runs. The bands were beautiful back then with every member wearing a back piece. Rather then presenting a frontal broadway style production it was a real parade that could be seen from all sides.
