I usually only watch the "first start" videos but only because I have built many engines in my day (still do), just because I know the process. But I do enjoy a good "first start" 🙂 I did see that part where you modified the fuel pump arm which was a brilliant idea. Thats what I like about your channel, is the ingenuity that you use to repair things. Thanks for your time. Have a blessed weekend!

There's plenty of thunder in that engine. It's an elegant car. I like the lines of the 1956 model over the 1957.

You did a stellar job rebuilding that motor. I love the studebakers as they were way ahead in engineering and styling or the big 3. They put them out of business because they were afraid of their market share. You gotta get her painted, and the engine sounds great. Jonathan you are one heck of a mechanic.
@deadon4847
@deadon4847 Жыл бұрын
What really happened was that Studebaker suffered a series of missteps, setbacks and errors. Individually, they seemed relatively minor, especially at the time they occurred--but when added together, they managed to create a huge problem. Another big problem was Studebaker's aggressive union, which saddled the company with the highest labor costs in the industry. The company always seemed to cave in to union demands rather than risk a strike. Next were sales and quality problems with the 1953 models, followed by a big downturn in sales in 1954. By mid-1956, the company was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

@@Hjerte_Verkethere's good and bad about unions. A local electrician to the Saturn plant said: "We need to get these wires pulled today! If the union guys get a hold of it. They'll mike it out three+ weeks!". We got the wires pulled on the CMM enclosure that day! Yes, they helped improve working conditions, safety, and wages. 8 hour day I believe was one of their accomplishments.

Packard greedy ruined them when they merged.
@jimgarofalo5479
@jimgarofalo5479 Жыл бұрын
@@Nudnik1 Not true! Studebaker corporation was teetering on the bring of bankruptcy when Packard bought them in 1954. They were deeply in debt and swimming in red ink. Packard at that time had plenty of money and good cash flow, but they were missing something. They needed a lower priced car with more appeal to the blue collar buyer. Remember, Packard was a LUXURY make. They were expensive. However, Packard did not realize how deeply in debt Studebaker was. The merger dragged Packard down with the sinking Studebaker company. Had it not been for the money from Packard, Studebaker might have ended by 1955. As it happened, the Packard car ended by 1956 and the Packard name by 1958. Studebaker limped on into the 1960s, but even the Avanti could not save them. So, if you're going to tell it, TELL IT RIGHT!!!

And your know how, not just mecanical problems, but most practical things, I'm totally sat out. Take care of your health and family, sir. I was a lot like you, not enough hours in daylight or at night. And I paid the price. Now I'm retired and suffering the consequenses of my stupidity. And.. the flathead won't stand a chance. I like the first start video's but I prefer to watch them ALL because as a heavy duty truck mechanic for more than half my life, and a guy who also has too many projects, I enjoy the trials and tribulations of the entire process from the introduction of the vehicle, to tear down (if required) all the way to the first start, to tedious tuning and then enjoying the satisfaction of taking a vehicle that was long dead on its maiden voyage down the road, sometimes like this Studebaker the first in 40 or 50 years. Two greasy thumbs-up!!

This is a fantastic find of a real classic. A neighbor of mine back during my college days (late 1960s) drove one of these for a year when it was new. He kept it for a year and traded it in on a new 1957 Golden Hawk with the supercharged Studebaker engine as soon as it was available. He always said that he loved the Packard engine, but he had ordered the car without power steering, which was the common practice back then, especially for performance-related cars. The Packard engine was significantly heavier than the Studebaker, making the car very awkward to steer at low speeds. He claimed that once you got up to speed out on the road the steering was much better, but the car tended to plow a bit going into corners. He had later driven a 1956 Golden Hawk with power steering and said it made a world of difference in the low speed handling, but still acted nose-heavy at speed. The Packard engine was a real torque monster for its day. The handling problems can be overcome with some judicious tuning of the front suspension (and power steering, of course). This one needs to be brought back to good condition like new mechanically. The original finish is not really all that important, but the rust and mechanical issues need to be addressed. Great job - so far... Keep up the good work..!!!

Beautiful ! She sounded like she hit first try . A few adjustments later , & it's running . Step by step , that is going to be a nice car again . 70K is just broke in . That engine will settle in nice as you run it , & adjust it in . Practically brand new . Those old generators are usually just brushes stuck , rarely burned out . Could just need polarization too . Clean & check the regulator . Now that the rest is going , should be fine . Sounded like that fuel pump modification worked fine . Steady idle , over 40 psi on the oil , smooth running . Hopefully that transmission will sort itself out with run time , & clean oil . You have enough peripherals to contend with . All in all , a fantastic first start , & a great solid car to build on .

One of the best things about your "first start" videos is that you are a "carburetor whisperer". I never know what the hell all those screws and air passages and such do. You don't just get 'em started, you fiddle with the carb and easily make the engines sit there and idle. It is a joy to watch.

I drove a relatively new 1956 with dual quads, at and twin trac. that a friend of mine owned. They had blistering straight acceleration, but the P-motor wieght made them some what nose heavy. We had taken a ride and on the retirn he let me drive it. We need to pass a string of cars and advised me to makes sure I was in the left lane before I accerated. They had slow steeling and it accelerated so fast that before I had a chance to change lanes I would hit the car ahead. I stepped down , the quads opened and we left two black markes. The at spun the tires as it shifted at 75 mph. What a ride in a rocket .

The proprietor was the pre -emminent Studabaker collector in the tri-state area of the north-east, so I aquired an interest in the make myself. The Packard powered versions were virgin territory for me, so the videos are very interesting.

As you have pointed out this engine was fiddled with before where someone was trying to get it started and those individuals would have had to have done what you just did in order to get this engine started. Yes, a lot of these first start videos are not set in stone and there are many reasons for an engine to be stuck. Engine sounds good and when you get the tuning bugs out of it the car could make a decent driver. A big plus for the car is that it is complete and with some TLC and elbow grease and could be an enjoyable vehicle for somebody or a nice car for a restoration if one wants to pursue it. Yes, sir your fuel pump modification is spot on.
