Thanks jay, those inner lights were parking lights for 57 as they weren’t 50 state legal until 1958 the USA had crazy light laws back in the day, that would be worthy of a show in itself covering the light laws everything was regulated, size height accessibility etc. for today’s would you rather I’d actually take the 57 fairlane in option one and the Pontiac in the second wyr, I’ve never been a fan of the forward look Chrysler products, I started driving in 1978 and you could buy a Plymouth or dodge etc in good condition for $100-$150 of course anything with fins back then was that way most people bought a Chrysler and used it for the demolition derby, sad but true the 55-57 chevy’s and fords were a different story all together though and they were already out of the young guys range back then. It was so ridiculous my buddy bought a 59 caddy convertible for $200 and we would all chip in to put gas in it 😂😂😂

Yes,I was thinking that the inner small "headlight" wasn't really a headlight. I understand that a lot of those "forward look" tailfin specials were plagued with water leaks,wind leaks and drafts,whistles at speed,and rattles. Especially the models that lacked a proper "B" pillar. The '54 and '55 Dodges were better looking to my eye Actually I think some of that "Forward Look" stuff was borrowed from Raymond Loewy's work at Studebaker with his Hawks.

@@davidpowell3347 In 1957, Chrysler referred to the front lighting arrangement as "Double-Header" lighting not as dual headlamps. It wasn't until 1958 that dual headlamps were legal in all jurisdictions. Which explains why all 1957 Chrysler, Desoto, and Imperial models had either a single headlight or a dual setup depending on the selling jurisdiction.

@@Remembering-rq6si Are you sure about $10,000 ?? That was still a _lot_ of money in the '70s. I bought my '55 Chevy Pickup for $300 in 1973 ... and the body was perfectly straight, it ran. I did put new rings in it, and I did get it painted. My best friend bought a '56 Chevy ... we were TEENS, there is no way we were buying $10,000 cars with our $2.25 per hour jobs. I bought a brand new '77 Ford Mustang, off the showroom floor, for $3400. My parents bought a HOUSE with a KENNEL in the back in Los Angeles area for $35,000--and my dad thought that price was crazy.

16:03 The "D" and "B" knobs to the right of the steering wheel are Defrost and heater Blower. The temperature control for the heater/defroster is the slide lever below the radio. Love these '57 & '58 forward look Chrysler products & appreciate you detailing all this information! Like the '56 Dash better. Given the color of the interior, this car probably had a yellow & black 2-tone exterior. WYR: 1. Dodge 2. Mercury.

1957-58 2 door hardtops from Plymouth and Dodge are probably the sleekest mass production cars ever made, that low and yet round roofline is simply lovely. That collectors often overlook them (especially the Dodges, the Plymouths enjoy some spotlight thanks to Christine) is a shame on one hand, but a great bonus of uniqueness on the other hand. A couple of points. The brochure shot of the Hemi engine shows the 1953.'54 241 cube, Red Ram Hemi. The Red Ram name was always used on the base V8 engine, & in 1953/'54, the 241 Hemi was the only V8 engine available in 1955 the Hemi went to 270 cubes & was called the "Super Red Ram." with 2bbl carb as standard with 4bbl as an option The base V8 engine became the 270 cube Polysphere Red Ram. [The Semi Hemi] In 1956 the Hemi was the 315 cube "D500" & was available only as an extra cost option. There was also a dual quad Power Pack option for the Hemi The base/standard V8 engine was the 315 cube Polysphere Red Ram. For 1957 the base/standard V8 engine became the 325 Polysphere Red Ram The 325 Hemi was still available as an extra cost option only & still called the "D500", The dual quad Power Pack was again, an upgrade option for the Hemi. The engine in the car on display is hard to accurately identify but with four bolt rocker covers it would be a 1958 350cube Big Block, or perhaps a 1959/'60, 361 cube Big Block. Either way, it is not an original engine for that car. PS. The 1957 Plymouth was a much better looking car in my view, but was never available with a Hemi while the other divisions did offer their own version of the Hemi design.

The engine in that car is definitely a B engine of some kind with the front mounted distributor. The first generation Hemi was discontinued after 1958 and replaced by the 326 Poly in 1959 in the Coronet and the B 361/383 in other models. In 1960 and afterwards the 318 Poly (previously Plymouth only) became the base V8 in many Dodge models.

@@1575murray Being a pedantic SOB as I am, I need to say that both Dodge & DeSoto Hemi engines breathed their last in 1957, while Chrysler/ Imperial passenger cars saw 1958 as their last year. 'Some' Dodge trucks however, were available with the 354 Power Giant Hemi in 1959, although I suspect to simply use up stocks of engines still in storage.

I don’t know what was up with the leaking, but my parents bought a new 1960 Chrysler convertible that leaked like a sieve. It was so bad, and they had it back to the dealership so many times, that Chrysler told the dealer to take the car back and give my parents something else. They chose a ‘60 Plymouth Fury two-door hardtop and loved it. They were still driving it in 1967 when I came home from the hospital in it. For 1957, it’s got to be Mopar. It’s the most modern, and the GM cars especially, look very tired next to them.

Growing up in the 1960s, the show Highway Patrol starring Broderick Crawford was shown in repeat on Saturday mornings. It originally ran from 1955 to 1959. There were several makes featured as patrol cars and the '57 Dodge police special was prominently featured in the episodes filmed in '57. Incidentally, the show also was a showcase for all makes and models of the era and a real treat for car nuts like us. Also, Chrysler corporation intended to introduce quad headlamps across their line (I believe the first manufacturer to do so) but quad headlamps weren't legal in all 50 states until 1958 hence the odd big-n-little configuration on the Dodge, Plymouth & Chrysler and the single headlamps in the wide opening on the DeSoto. Another great video as usual, keep up the great work.👍🏁 Even though I'm a Ford guy and my Dad's first new car was a '57 Ford Custom 500 (292/3 speed manual on the column) I would have to pick the Dodge...

All States legalized quad headlights early in calendar year 1957, hence the optionally available quad headlights on 57 De Soto, Chrysler, Imperial and Mercury. Only Nash had quad headlights, as standard equipment, from the start of the 57 model year.

All those designer rectangular and aerodynamic headlamps from Plymouths, Grahams, Fords & Lincolns went away went away for the 1940 model year. I liked sealed beams as a kid because they always made my car look newer since we had to replace the entire lens & element at the same time.

Lt. Dan Matthews of the Highway Patrol (Crawford) started the series behind the wheel of a sweet 1955 Buick Century squad car. I think it was the big Roadmaster engine in the shorter wheelbase Buick Special body that year.

Hey Jay I enjoy the show. FYI the government did not allow Americam auto makers to use quad headlights unril 1958. The inside lights on this 57 model were turn signals. Interestingly, Studebaker, which by this time was struggling, could not afford to retool new front fenders to house the extra light when all the other makers made the leap in 58. The best they could manage was a sort of tacked on bulge on the side for the extra headlight. It looked like exactly what it was; a cheap tack-on. I believe the model was called the commander. Look it up and see what i mean. Toodle looooooooo.

In 57, headlights were regulated state by state. By about the first of the year, all states were allowing quad headlights, which is why you see 1957 De Sotos, Chryslers, Imperials and Mercurys with optional quad headlights. The FIRST American car with quad headlights as standard equipment was the 1957 Nash, followed about three months later by the 57 Eldorado Brougham.

My father had a 1957 Dodge Cornet 4 Door in white and heather 2-tone. No power steering, no power brakes, rubber floor, had the 2 speed automatic. It was the only car he ever bought new. My father loved the look of it and its handling from its torsion bar suspension. I noticed a sticker in the glove compartment door says 'Ed. Van Ness Motors'. My father's Dodge came from that same dealer !. It was located on NJ Rt. 23 just north of US 46 in the Mountain View section of Wayne, NJ. That dealer had to move and did so to a building still standing about 1/2 mile north as the original location torn down in the mid-1960's when I-80 was constructed. Those owners sold to others, becoming Wayne Dodge, and went out of business I think in the early to mid-2000's when Chrysler got rid of a lot of dealers. I have stories around that car, even a few pictures of it with my brothers. My father got rid of it as my mom, who got her license only in 1961, couldn't drive it as didn't have power steering or brakes, needed a cushion to see out the window. It also had issues with the automatic choke, my father put in a manual choke.

I wonder how it was that *_TWO_* speeds was sufficient for this (and many) cars? PS: It'd be GREAT to see the pictures, but I guess there's no way to do that, sadly. Lastly, I remember manual chokes; several cars of my youth had them, and my first car, a 1955 Chevy Pickup had a manual choke. I can still hear my dad yelling at mom for not pushing the choke back in, _wasting gas!_ (I miss them both)

@@josephgaviota 2-speed automatics were not very good. Basically you had a low gear for slower speeds, and would kick down for acceleration the other speed was for normal driving. Chevrolet had 'Powerglide', a 2 speed automatic transmission. It was cheaper, more reliable than 3 speed transmissions but had poor fuel mileage, limited top speed. As to manual chokes, they pretty much disappeared by 1963 on cars, a few more years on trucks and into the 1980's on some European cars in Europe.

The '59 was the 3rd year of that tri-5, and being the 3rd year, took the styling to new Space Age heights, not unlike the '57 Chevy after the '55 and '56.

I’m not trying to correct you but I was around in 1957 when these came out. The 4 lights in the front are not all headlights. The 2 outboard lights are headlights with both bright and dim features. The 2 inboard lights are what use to be called parking lights now days referred to as turn signal. They were also turn signals in 57. Out family owned a 58 Coronet. In 58 the 4 headlights were headlights. The 2 outboard were dims and the 2 inboards came on for bright/highway driving giving you all 4 lights. Chrysler moved the parking/turn signal lights into 2 pod they placed down into the grill. They did the same in 59. If you can get 3 pictures of the 57,58 & 59 from the front you can see what I’m referring to. Another thing they had is what I call the thermometer speedometer. There was no needle on it. If you look closely at the speedo in the dash picture you will see what I mean. The speedometer was horizontal with the numbers on top. When you started to move red would come out from under and travel horizontally under the numbers and marks underneath just like thermometer indicates a temperature increase. It never changed color, just stayed red all the way up. According the my dad’s mechanic ours had what he called the 325 intersepter engine in it. He said that was the engine they put in police cars. We bought it new from the dealer but now I think about it it could have been a police car that was ordered and not taken. It was a real plane Jane. Of course back in those days only the expensive cars weren’t. It was a white 4 door with blue vinyl interior and rubber floor mats. Standard steering and brakes but it did have a 2 speed automatic transmission. We went on a number of vacation in it and when dad kicked it down to pass someone it would really fly which is why I believe the engine was a cop engine. The trunk was huge and I don’t think we ever filled it up with luggage for the four of us or anything else. We’ll that’s mostly what I remember about our 58 Dodge Coronet.

The reason the one smaller dual "headlight is actually the turn signal on the '57. It was the same way with the '57 Plymouth which changed to dual Headlights in 1958 with separate turn signal lights, as did the Dodge.

Exactly - quad headlights weren't 50 state legal yet when the 57's debuted and so manufacturers cheated in various ways - some offering driving lights in the 2nd lamp (Lincoln, for example). Later in the model year some cars that debuted with singles now offered duals - the Chrysler/Imperial line is a case in point.

Hi Jay!: I'm fascinated by these early forward look cars! People may call them ugly, and some really are! But, they brought in the longer, lower, wider cars, that would dominate in the 1960's. Chrysler Corporation (and Ford also to a lesser degree), kind of shocked GM styling with these cars, and GM seemed stuck with their "shoebox" look until 1959. Which is ironic, by the way, because around 1961 the finny cars became extinct. Maybe Harley and the guys at GM styling didn't take these kind of cars seriously. I really like the 1956 Dodge quite a bit, but the 1957 was the best looking of the finny cars to me. 1958 wasn't bad, but the 1959 was REALLY UGLY! But I LOVE the 1959 because it IS so ugly! The car you showed would look better with the original paint scheme. There are clues to the original color where the paint is chipped off or worn. Looks like the car was grey around the beltline, with light yellow on the top and bottom. Which would explain why the interior is Grey and Yellow. Would be a stunner in those colors, actually! If they weren't so rust prone, these would be very nice cars to have! Roomy, and with good horsepower. About the knobs on the dash. Had to download a 1957 Dodge Service Manual to get a clue. But, the D knob should control the defroster, so's you could switch from heat to defrost. The B knob looks like it controls the speed of the blower.

I love the long, flowing or "in motion" look of these automobiles. The interior and dash/steering wheel design look awesome IMO! I'm sure the feel of the ride would be amazing too! I would probably pick any pristine example of this design, although the WYRs are a hard choice because I think all of them are great autos and beautiful designs. I think though, the rarity of owning one if these would be the deciding factor. 😎 Video

I am not a Dodge person, but the 57 Dodge nailed it as far as where the auto styling was headed. But, as you said, they were notorious for rusting out. The 57 Chevy would be my choice, but this Dodge is pretty fine. PS…..love your rendition of Crazy!

The '57 thru '60 Dodge's had, IMHO, the most beautiful tailfins of any of the Detroit offerings. My absolute favorite tailfin is on a 1960 Dodge Polara. My Gramps said these came standard with rust holes in the trunk... lol... WYR: 1) Dodge, no doubt! 2) Ohhhh, gott go with the Merc. Those '57/'58 Merc's were awesome!

Wish that 1957 Dodge Royal V-8, 2 door hardtop does have dealership and fender skirts by ordering in the catalog, even back in 1957. 1957 Dodge, along with Plymouth in the Chrysler Corporation cars does have 2 headlights, and 1958 Dodge and Plymouth does have 4 headlights.

I am glad I bought a '56. It had bigger wheels, 6cyl + 3 speed manual and better, larger brake drums since part of the "lower, longer, wider" was to use smaller wheels. Also the '55, '56, were less prone to rusting and in the early 1960s had a higher trade in value, al least in my neck of the woods.

Jay, the first car I remember our family had when I was young was a four door Coronet. I believe those inner lights are the turn signals. They went to quad headlights in 1958. As far as looking angry I feel the 1959 styling had a real pissed off kind of “face”.

These were very good-looking cars compared to the competition that year. But they had been rushed to market, and were prone to breakdowns...not unlike the '49 Ford. When I was four years old, my father drove a '57 Dodge. The car looked great, certainly better than the car he traded in (a black 1954 Buick....now THAT car had an angry front end!) But the Dodge was mechanically unreliable, and he traded it in after a few months. He traded it in for a '55 Pontiac. Still, this is a great-looking car. So, believe it or not, I would pick this car for WYR...as long it could be guaranteed it was reliable by a seriously reliable mechanic!

I think the '57 Chrysler product line was so popular that the assembly facilities had to speed up the pace in order to meet customer demand and many fittings under the hood & on the chassis were not up to snuff.

I do not recognize the engine in this car as a 57 Dodge engine. It looks like a 350cid B block from a later model Dodge. The 325cid engines had the distributor at the rear as well as scalloped valve covers. I also associated the Powerflite with the 6cyl engines.

The PowerFlite was available with both 6 cylinder and V8 engines through the 1961 model year. You are correct this car's engine is a B block possibly a 361 or 383 as the 350 was a one year 1958 only engine.

Regarding the air cleaner on the Dodge 325 engine in your peek under the hood, it is certainly not a factory 325 unit for 1957, for that was a very distinctive cleaner that was installed off to the side of the WCFB carburetor (and 2 of them for the 325 Hemi D500). The air cleaner shown is similar to a later unit on 350s and 361s. And you might have featured the Ash Tray that is unique. Ar4f.

I wish the '57 Chevy's hood had retained the flatness of the '55 & '56 that immediately preceded them, with the bird/plane hood ornament in the center, instead of the separate 'gun-slits' on each side. The '57 Dodge's hood and ornament were much closer to that ('55-'56 ideal) as seen at the 10:20-40 mark here. I love the '57 Dodge and Chevy, except for what I just said about the Chevy.

Hi Jay. You got fooled by the lights. They are not quad, and the smaller ones are park lights/turn signals. Almost the whole US car industry went quad light in 58, and in 57 Chrysler and Ford were stylistically working towards the quad setup but not quite there yet.

The taillight setup on this '57 Coronet looks a lot like that of the limited production Swept Side pickup which was produced '57 to'59. Not surprising as both Dodge products. Also take note of Chrysler products having flush door handles well ahead of their time. Flush door handles didn't become the trend until the 1970's. As for preferences I would choose the 1957 Chevy and Pontiac.

Looked at the listing on the Classic Auto Mall website and this car has a 361 cid Chrysler "B" engine which was not a factory option in 1957? The engine was probably replaced later in the cars life. That would have been an upgrade at the time but now the car would be more interesting with a Hemi, or perhaps an early poly. Mopar experts out there please weigh in here. Otherwise a beautiful example of a rare car.

The 1957 Mopars did NOT have a true quad headlamp system. In many States, quad headlamps were not legal, although they would be in 1958. In this '57, the faux headlamps were turn signal lights, I believe. If you look at a '58 Dodge, all 4 lamps are of equal size. That is a true quad headlamp. I don't believe that the Coronet was an entry level model. Too much chrome and flash. The entry level Dodge had minimal brightwork. The '57 Coronet would be comparable to the entry-level DeSoto. If you notice, this era of Mopar had dash-mounted rear-view mirrors. Consequently, the seatbacks were cut down in the center for the benefit of the rear-view mirror.

Chrysler products from this era were notorious for poor fitting seams at all of the rocker panel and door joins. 1957 was the worst by far as they were dealing with a whole new body layout and the initial dies did not leave enough space for adjustment. Andy

To me, the 'most angry' Dodge is the 59 - take a look at the front end. Going to eat you up. I know where a 59 black/yellow Custom Royal D500 drop top lives (with the swivel buckets too) = quite a statement car. Think the hubcaps here are Plymouth. I almost like the design of the 56 better than the 57. The 57, to me, is just a bit overboard, pushing too hard to make a statement. To me, just a short distance from being gaudy. Seems to me that the 56 is more integrated into itself. Not trying to call attention to itself. BTW, this is the year i graduate d from high school and all us guys were really into cars! I should also add that, for some reason, i never much liked Dodge cars. Not sure why, they just seemed kind of like some stodgy older, bald guy would drive because he thought it would make him look cool. 😂

WYR first, I'd take the Ford and the Pontiac. The eyebrow front and tacked-on tailfin rear of this Dodge looks goofy and gaudy to me. Virgil Exener who designed this always over-did things and chose extremes instead of restraint. I like some of his work but not this, though I must recognize that it was a popular look in it's day.

Exner styling came onto its own this year! Luv the "evolved" rear end as all these years never thought about it! The jet tube taillights were awesome.and GM freaked when they saw them, hence their freaky '59s. Nissan and even Volvo have introduced SUVs of late that mock the tailfin kick up past the rear doors. I think tailfins really enhanced cars, i do not like chiseled block styling of cars of the 80s😮 Yuck Don't get me started on the hideous Cyber truck😂
