It's remarkable how that total wreck of a car was restored by Tom Maruska in 2022. Total Magic really.

@@Volterrific I'd rate that 56 concept car (now that it's restored) right up there with the Batmobile, the Gulf Oil Ford GT40, Carol Shelby's aluminum bodied 427 Cobra, LIttle Deuce Coupe, etc. Should be at Pebble Beach Auto Show.
@Volterrific2 жыл бұрын
@@tompastian3447 agreed on all counts. Ford’s best stylists including Larry Shinoda and John Najjar designed the XM-Turnpike Cruiser. The car will be auctioned on January 14 at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida. Whoever buys it will be lucky (and rich), and yes show it at Pebble Beach.

@@oscarprendergast7295 If you have link to a photo of the Futura made from a fibreglass shell, please post it. I'd like to see that. The current Batmobile manufacturer is having some problems getting drive trains and other key components. He has a youtube video up, talking about how a customer asked to have him investigated as to why the Batmobile he ordered has yet to be delivered. He says at least 3 more years will be needed to complete the car. That is a long time to wait for a vehicle, plus the time already gone by. I think that shop is in Indiana. You have to wonder about the mental state of people who acquire a beautiful show car like that concept Cruiser, then leave the whole thing sitting out side exposed to the elements. At least spend 50 dollars and put a vinyl tarp over the car. Glad someone finally got their hands on it who could restore it.

That’s an old video from 1982. We were both having fun playing with the radio in my old car. I like Patsy Cline and old school country music but we were looking for top 40 pop while in the rural area between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Turnpikes were part of the national US highway system (I 5, I 90 etc) promoted by President Eisenhower and in development back then. That's why the name was chosen, I'm sure.

why would some one buy a extremely rare (obviously) car like this then just leave it sit to deteriorate more than it was when they bought it? More money than brains...and ambition perhaps???

When the production 1957-58 Turnpike Cruiser was a sales flop, Ford wanted to be rid of the concept car which had already outlived its usefulness. Unlike GM which retained their concept cars, Ford disposed of most of them after the show car circuit. Since most were either "push cars" and couldn't be driven, the others were not titled and couldn't be registered to be driven on public roads. The XM TPC had a sad life until Tom Maruska had his way with it. I've seen the restored masterpiece in person...just an incredible rebirth.

Feel free to post a link to your videos from 1982. I have a lot to learn from you. Meanwhile, let’s see other videos and still photos of this car from that era. I can’t wait to see them.
