I have one just like it. In my opinion this is the best rifle for deer hunting in MI. Sweet handling and more than enough accuracy and power for typical MI ranges. I also have the satisfaction of hunting with a rifle that has missed very few deer seasons since 1957.

Nice...... mine is from 1946. One of the last rifles shipped from the Utica, NY factory before they closed and moved to Mass. They made about 20,000 99's that year, while simultaneously shutting down parts of the plant and moving their machinery to the other site. Savage was the only WWII wartime contractor that consistently met their projected quotas in time, and were 80% ahead of scheduled delivery during the entire duration of the war; making various machine guns for U.S. Army Air Corps and Marine Corps bombers and fighter planes respectively. After the war, they no longer needed all the manufacturing space, so decided to close the Utica plant. It's cliche' these days to say, "they don't make 'em like that anymore", but these rifles fall solidly into that category. Mine is 73 years old, and is still my favorite hunting rifle after owning it since 1976. This rifle was designed to put meat on the table........... and it still does. God Bless America! Some day, we'll find our way back to the roots from whence we came......

Greatest lever action deer rifle ever made! I own this same 99F in .300 Sav and .308 as well as a Takedown made in 1927 in .300 Sav The rotary mags hold 5 plus one in the chamber not 4. The model Fs were drilled and tapped at the factory and have shorter tapered barrels and jeweled bolts. The .300 Sav cartridge is very close in performance to the .308 and was the inspiration and predecessor of the .308. Designed in 1899 it was the most advanced rifle of its day. Light and fast handling lever that is a 400 or 500 yard rifle in .300 or .308 My rifle of choice for deer hunting because I like to still hunt and sit and enjoy having the ability to take longer range shots. Great review and rifle.

I purchased an 1895 Savage at a gun show. The seller said it was a consignment gun and was "a rare one". I knew nothing about 95 Savages. Went home and read about it and discovered that it was worth much more than the seller was asking so I drove back to the show and bought it: $365. Went to the range. After shooting I walked up to the target searching it as I did for hits. Didn't see any until I got right up to it and there they were all exactly smack dab in the center, on the "X"! Tiny group. This a 303 Savage, as they all were. It is essentially a 30/30 and this one is dead on!

Over that past 20 years I have bought two more 99 Savages. A 308 and a 300 Savage. The 300 Savage is a 40s gun with a wonderful peep sight attached. The Savage Model 1895 was Savage's counter attack to the very famous Winchester 1894. The 1895 didn't take take off and production was ceased. It was retooled and rereleased in 1899 with hope of a contract for the US Army. It wasn't chosen, but the 1899 fared much better in sales than it's predecessor. It was originally available in a .303 caliber only but Savage quickly made it available in the 30-30, and the famous .250-3000 Savage. In 1920, Savage released it's most famous cartridge, the .300 Savage, which at one time rivaled the 30-30 in cartridge sales. Production of the 99 ceased after 1981, with a few failed comebacks in the 1990's.

I was just thinking in terms of ammo availability and price heavily favoring the .308, but then I believe you (like me) handload, so ammo availability is only a matter of having enough cases and the dies on hand, as long as you already have the other components for the .308 and other .30 calibers on hand. ;)

You need to know the one idiosyncrasy of the Savage Model 99. The brass round counter could show zero but that does NOT mean the gun is unloaded. THERE COULD STILL BE A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER. If this is the case, it will fire if you pull the trigger. Keep it truly unloaded. Keep your finger off the trigger. Watch where that muzzle is pointing.

Not exactly news. This is true of any gun with a separate chamber and magazine.

Not sure what you are referring to.

I want a 300 savage

They are not hard to find. Not nearly as many made as the 30-30 Winchesters, but still pretty common. Look on gunbroker.com There are always lots of them for sale.

my grand father has a 300 savage, its been a few years sense i saw it so i don't remember is it was a lever action or not. I want to shoot it so bad hopefully that rifle gets passed to my father when he passes (hopefully not soon).
