Nice shooting, keep an eye out for forend pressure on the barrel. It will change point of impact. As for the trigger. I bought a new firing pin assembly on eBay for $40 and was a great improvement. Keep up the videos!

Thanks for the kind words. Is the new firing pin assembly aftermarket?? If so who makes it. I like the gun enough to put some improvements into it. It will shoot MOA but the trigger could use some help. Thanks for watching

No finer deer rifle ever made, IMO, especially for our style of hunting in the Northeast. I’ve got the featherweight version, and boy does it handle well! Love that thing.

I got a Bayonet for my 300 savage model 99 made in 1955 ! It was my fathers and he passed it down to me ! I got my first deer as did my son Jason with this family unit ! I put a bayonet on it in case I only wound my deer and need to have a Coup de Graw ! One never knows when that will come in handy, but when it does, I'll be ready ! ;-)

When I was younger I deer hunted with a few older guys that packed Savage model 99s in 300 Savage. Everyone else was shooting model 70s or Rem 700s. Those old guys killed just as many deer with those levers and wouldn’t trade them for nothing. They absolutely loved them. It made me want one at the time. Good 300yd deer rifle like you said.

My uncle, who has a ranch near Corona, NM has a neighbor who occasionally hunts pronghorn with a Savage 99 in 250-3000. It’s a great shooter with hand loaded 100 grain partitions at 2750 fps. He hunts his dirt tanks so he can take shots inside 250 yards and kills a buck every time he uses it. I think these are very neat rifles and have always wanted one.

Hay Chris, my family has an obsession with the 99’s. My fathers dad carried a .22 high power all the time and has so many stories with it. My mothers dad had a .300 Savage that is still a n the family. My younger brother has a .250 Savage also known as the .250-3000 and it is truly one of the old ones, brass counter and all. I currently have a .308 almost identical to the one you’re shooting with the same results. I also have a .243 that had a detachable magazine. I could go on forever about these lever guns….but I won’t. They are just good guns. Come and borrowed my shooting table and see if you like it!

@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 OK, that is just mean. Posting a video about a rifle, chambered in a caliber the '73 was actually/originally chambered in and not .45 Colt's. I really, really like the .45 Colt's but it drives me a bit batty that current manufactures chamber "clones" of both the '73 and '92 Winchesters in a caliber neither was chambered in originally. There were a LOT of Winchesters of both models chambered in .44-40 and the caliber itself was, until somewhere around the early to late 1940s utilized, effectively, as a deer and self-defense round east of the Rockys. I'm really looking forward to that video come Friday! Take care and keep 'em comin'!!!

@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 I'm pretty sure we are singing out of the same hymn book. I've long been a fan of the .44-40 and deeply regret not buying a Rossi chambered in the caliber when I was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX in the 1980s. It even had the correct rifling! Only one other Winchester original chambering gets less love than the .44-40 and that is the third most popular Old West" caliber, the .38-40. You know, the 10mm/.40S&W ballistic twin, only in black powder loadings. But I can't in all fairness expect anybody to track down or utilize an original rifle for testing/a YT video as the ammo would almost certainly have to be handloaded and the rifles are probably worth their weights in gold to collectors these days. So, I'll just be settin' over here in my rockin' chair and wait for Friday's video!

I always use a lead sled for the initial sight in. After that, I will use bags and offhand for my own hold and shooting style. Usually, the difference is minimal, so no other adjustments are needed, especially when using my leverguns. I'm partial to Winchesters leverguns. But I do have one Savage 99 made in 1950. It's a wonderful rifle in great condition (300 Savage). I used to think that they were odd and ugly, but now I think that they are a very elegant and wonderful rifle. (Kind of funny how as a person ages there appreciation for things can change) I've installed a reproduction Marbles tang peep sight for my 60+ year old eyes, and with my reloads, it's one moa. And like you said, I don't load it to max, but close to it. I'm using the (Hornaday 150gr SST 300 Savage bullets), and the rifle seems to like just under max loads for best accuracy.

You might shave some off the group size by making sure the front bag is in the same place every time. Guns with two-piece stocks can oftentimes shoot best with the front bag right in front of the trigger. The front bag should never be directly under the front sling swivel, especially when the sling is attached. Personally, if it isn't hunting season, guns really don't need slings so I generally remove mine. Exception being, those slings that are difficult to remove. Lol You are one of few youtubers who know what type of aimpoint to use. Black n white square. Your eye will quarter it with the reticle consistently and repeatedly every time.
