1958 & 1961 Johnson 18 HP Disassembled

I'm building a Glen-L Squirt and am rebuilding a 1958 Johnson 18 hp FD-12 to power it. This video shows both a 1958 and 1961 Johnson 18 hp disassembled, identifying all of the parts: block, crank, rods, pistons, magneto, flywheel, carburetor and more. Video discusses broken parts, such as scored pistons, locked lower unit and broken skeg. This is not intended to cover rebuilding methods, but is meant to show and identify the various parts.

I just acquired a 58' Johnson FD-12, indeed your video is immensely valuable! This one is frozen so I have it soaking in a little penetrating oil via spark plug ports. I will probably need to break it down so, now I have a great idea what to expect. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. I have a FD15f 18 hp engine. I need to remove the power head to replace the crank. I'm stumped. I removed the the easily accessible 6 bolts under the engine but something else is holding it. It appears there is a Philips head bolt at the forward end that is inaccessible unless I remove the tiller swivel. Can't believe its that hard. Am I missing something? Tried removing the swivel by unbolting the upper and lower rubber shocks, but can't remove it. Please help.

Loved the video, not sure you can help me but I have a 1961 18hp Johnson but the model is an FD-15F I can’t find any info on what the F would stand for??

No, but OldJohnnyRude had some great videos on rebuilding vintage Johnsons. His might be on the 15, bit it's practically the same.

That 1958 has HYPOID gears. The teeth slide across each other to reduce noise and vibration. The downside is friction loss and there is a special lube required. The later model has straight cut bevel gears. It uses regular heavy gear oil. Retired gear salesman.
