Brandon, this video allowed me to swap a power head. I cannot thank you enough for this tutorial. To my shock I fired it up and it runs like a dream. I love these old OMC motors.

Thank you. I have been restoring a 1960 johnson 10 hp. I was unaware of that hidden bolt. I cannot thank you enough. You sound identical to one of my professors and I thought you might have been him until I saw your beard.

Great video. A coworker just gave me a 1977 25hp with a wobbly upper mount. Now I know how to get at it. Thanks

This is a very useful video. I just need the pan -- the part that holds the tiller handle. Still have to remove the power head.

Wow, sure looks familiar to me. I did a total rebuild on a 1972 Evinrude 25hp and went through the exact same hassle trying to get the powerhead off. That front attachment bolt is a real bitch to get at to begin with and my motor had been sitting outside for 12 years after only being used in salt water. So I did the same thing you did - pulled the powerhead and exhaust housing off together to get at the front bolt. One of my lower motor mount bolts broke when pulling that apart and when I finally got exhaust/powerhead up on the bench, the front powerhead bolt also promptly twisted off due to corrosion. Took me half the day to finally get everything pulled apart. When I put it all back together, I first ground out a small section of the steering handle so i could get at that front powerhead bolt a lot easier with the exhaust housing already installed on the swivel bracket.

Thanks for the tip on the front powerhead bolt. I guess that is the same to at least 1975.

Brandon, excellent video. I’m an old timer that grew up with these type of outboards. Recently retired I am getting back into old style boating. I picked up a 1971 Johnson 20 hp. The pull start won’t pull past to compression cycle so I tried drill on the top crank but. I will barely get past compression cycle. Pulled the power head off. Still the same so if pulled the head and everything looks fine. Pulls over nice and quiet without the plugs. I “oiled” up everything and put back the head. Same result. Before I disassemble everything for an autopsy I am asking you advice. Can the crank bearings somehow shift during compression so it makes it very difficult for the motor to ge past compression. Can I somehow lube up the crankcase to see if there is a difference? I certainly appreciate you comments. Regards Pete

I looked but couldn't find it. Do you have a video on fixing or removing the shift handle?

Brandon, I am working on something similar (1977) I broke the bottom nipple off the bottom of the crankcase. I tried to drill it out and went right through that check valve for the oil recirculation. There is no part number to replace. Should I give up on this motor? I have another nipple but I am reading there is a check valve down there.

If the drive shaft is seized into the power head do I need a new crank shaft? Motor was ran with no oil in the lower unit and the drive shaft stayed with the power head instead of coming out with the lower unit. Would love to get in touch.

It happens, I wish it was rare, but its not uncommon. Usually, it happens when someone didn't but anti-seize on the driveshaft splines when the lower was removed. My email is in the 'About' section.

I have a 1997 30 hp johnson and have a back up 1998 25hp will it have the same power as the 30 hp
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Technically no, the 30hp can get a bit higher RPMs, thus, a hair more power. Will you notice a difference? probably not. But, you will if one has a different prop, or lower compression. a 'fresh' 20 will outperform a well used 30.

Hi great video! I have the same exact outboard! Why did you take the powerhead off? Is the motor seized up? Did you do a compression test? I have yet to put mine on the fishing boat. I might be able to use some of your parts if you are not going to rebuild yours, let me know!
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
The dude had it sitting - carb up, with no hood on it. Got mud, sand, and grass clipping all down inside.
@goldsmith96615 жыл бұрын
Would you sell a couple parts off it? Mine is missing the tiller handle. Is there much demand down there for those older 2 strokes?
@cmanfishing2475 жыл бұрын
And should it get spark with the stop switch disconnect

Yes, it should.
