Correction - it's the oldest known surviving colour videotape. CBS had used videotape for their black-and-white shows as early as either 1956 or 1957; the oldest surviving tape (documented) dates back to October 1957 with "The Edsel Show" (aired on 13 October of that year).

I think they mean it's the oldest videotape in the Library of Congress's possession.

I saw that video tape of WRC in Washington, DC. They went from Black & White to Color. President Ike Eisenhower was at the studio when they pushed the button to start Broadcasting in color. They were also recording on color video tape. Today it doesn't really mean anything. But on that day it was the beginning of a whole new era. The President was there, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was there. Members of the Cabinet, the leaders of the House and Senate were there. The President of NBC was there as well as the manager of WRC-TV station was there. It was a really big deal.

When you recopied the tape, where did you put the digital copy?

This was only Eisenhower's first appearance on color television; the NTSC standard had been modified for color in December of 1953. How about giving some credit to the individuals that did the first transfer in the 1980s? Ed Reitan, Dan Einstein? Without their research you'd STILL be scratching your heads....

Leave it to Eisenhower to wear a gray coat, white shirt and black tie for the first color TV broadcast.
