It's amazing to me that so many years after his death, I see so often from people all over the world, from all walks of life (other than perhaps the religious), the thought "What would The Hitch think about this". I can't think of another person that comes up like this so consistently. I envy the people on this stage for having such an opportunity to be close to this inspiring man, even if for too short a time. Charisma, moral integrity, bravery, talent, loyalty........ and joy in his vices. Qualities every man wishes he has. We will never know what The Hitch would think about this, because he would so often surprise us with an insight we didn't perhaps think of. He would sometimes agree with us, and sometimes not, but it would always be a joy to hear what he had to say.

1:16:43 Wow, Douglas is a really good friend defending Peterson like that, and he didn’t even smile when others were mocking him
@aidanhall66792 сағат бұрын
My respect for Douglas rose considerably, frankly I was disappointed by the almost puerile (and dogmatic) attitude with which the others mocked Peterson, I thought they were above ad hominems, even if Peterson explicitly defended the idea that knowledge of DNA was present in ancient civilisations, which I don’t think he did, even if it were speculative, I don’t think it’s reasonable to smear one’s image on account of an unfortunate miscommunication. That said, I can’t say the manner in which Mr Murray responded to some of the questions was particularly justified or admirable, what with his pompousness almost like he was dealing with a massive hangover, as for Dawkins if I were listening to audio I’d forget he was there, and when he did speak all I heard was arrogant scientism with a stern mug of self-righteousness to boot, I can forgive him for his age, it’s admirable to see him out and speaking even now, especially on such sensitive topics, his reputation isn’t exactly bulletproof and his demeanour won’t change my high opinion of him as a writer and a personal scientific hero. I’ve already addressed Fry, a man whom I also admire hugely but who I can’t help feel grossly missed the mark on his disanalogy between Peterson and a toothless dentist - not only is it the case that one’s personal attributes have no bearing on the validity or soundness of one’s advice, but it’s not like Jordan isn’t qualified to advise on mental health, he’s a qualified clinical psychiatrist of goodness’ sake, and don’t get me started on Dr. “philosophy bad” Krauss… a demonstrable ignoramus on all things philosophy or anything that can’t be calculated for that matter, not only are his arguments self-defeating but they imply that not merely can science operate independently of philosophical inquiry, but where philosophy extends its influence, scientific progress is retarded. Utter nonsense that it’s hardly worth going on, philosophers have made quick work of Krauss’ drivel in the past but it seems like he is either blissfully unaware or unwilling to change his mind. Maybe he’s just targeting a few bad actors who give the whole field a bad name, but if so he shouldn’t go around portraying it as though it’s a systematic defect, shameful the rest of the panel, eminently educated as they are in the humanities (at least Murray and Fry), didn’t called him out on it.

I don't think that Hitchens was being objective when condoning the invasion of Iraq in 2003, he knew that the pretext concocted to invade was bs and that it went against international laws. Hitchens had spent time in Iraq and had friends there who were persecuted by the regime. Hitchens abandoned principals of objectivity, after all Hussain had a secular government with the best education in the Arab world with women professionals in high ranking position. Hitchens knew how the US military operates and that the country would be destroyed, wish that, by the time of his death, he would have admit that he was wrong siding with the neocons.

Douglas Murray arguably gives the best insight into Hitch's genius when he notes the gift of making his readers curious. Striving against arguably the greatest sin in life, as simply taking lived-experience for granted? Which R. D. Laing described as the conscious problem of failing to notice that we're always failing to notice that we actually don't have a clue 'how' we actually do, being human. We just do it? And no human being can explain the subconscious synchronisation of their behaviours. Try wiggling your fingers to notice how this reflexive motion occurs without any instruction from your conscious mind, to contemplate why St Augustine suggested the mind is quite naturally alienated from truth?

"Speaking your mind is an invitation for discussion, not silence or offense" - Lawrence Nobody thinks like that and I fucking HATE IT. I am so cynical about people at this point, I no longer even think this is a misunderstanding. People respond with silence because they just don't care for making an honest thoughtful effort: They believe it is comfortable to live in their thoughtlessness because everyone else does and that leads to them feeling offended when someone dares to dive into a hard conversation. The cure? More confrontation.

Great conversation. But. Surely Christopher would have understood that Oct 7th was directly related to the consequences, that he himself alluded to; of a ‘doing what you want’ attitude toward humanity and then rationalising it away afterwards was a sure way to bring about chaos..? Douglas speaks as if the world must first get the J3wish to safety - seems legit. But not if the threat of Arabs must first be eradicated - this is patently ridiculous. Such silliness that sounds profound if given no intellectual attention. Not to forego the point that Oct 7th was a tragedy. Precisely the tragedy that CH expected would happen. Seems quite trite to mischaracterise the man; since you’re supposed to be celebrating the ways in which you knew him best. Maybe he would’ve just immediately agreed - post Oct ‘23 - that the j3wish project was now all set for complete Arab domination… But that just immediately makes him sound rather ordinary. It is with great grief that Palestinians must perish for the terror they have in their number, but that isn’t to flippantly forgive perhaps why it is there. All complications and complexity aside, real people are losing their lives where perhaps they may have not.

As Lawrence mentions, Hitchens could befriend anyone, even if they had opposing views. It seems a recent development- and I wish it would fade away- to reject people if they do not share one’s every value and thought. We have effectively ended civil discourse by throwing babies out with bath water. Tolerance has been lost, and we must reclaim it.

@@InigoMontoya- As far as Hitchens goes it wasn't recent by any means lol. His inner circle, whom he had known for most of his life always said the beauty of their friendship was that you could have extremely savage disagreements with him and it never clouded the friendship one bit.

My thoughts exactly. I think Hitch would call him a revolting racist

I loved Hitchens, I would have watched, but in the first minute you introduced three Zionists, three people who excuse the G-word in Gaza. That was enough.

Hitchens certainly didn't mind a war for Israel himself.

@@satireofcircumstance6458 - Yes, after 9/11, he (and Sam Harris) were total neocons. But I still enjoyed his take on religion.

And Hitch would call you out on your closed mindedness.

@@alaakela - Forget Hitch. This is the first time a G-word happening in real-time has been captured on camera and shared across the world. I'm not going to waste my time listening to people who deny or make excuses for people who invented a god who, by the way, called the inventors, "The Chosen People."

They'd have much more credibility if they dared to attack Judaism. I won't hold my breath though

Such highly intelligent and generally, humane people (not sure of Murray, though) simply see no justification for the struggle of the Palestinian people, and blindly side with the zionist cause. I was again amazed that Dawkins, whom I respect highly, thinks the Palestinian struggle started on 7 October.

I think Christopher's early death greatly affected the decade following. Imagine the tongue lashing Hitchens would have given to the MAGA right and the cancel culture left. Christopher's opinions and musings would have influenced many, and I believe this influence may have made the difference in close elections and referendums like Brexit. The world is in much worse condition because we lost Christopher so early. Rest In Peace.

@@Dannylikestobike Understand that he has now met Christ. Hopefully, he repented before the end. I have no idea if he did. But there is still time for you. Cease your rebellion against Christ. Repent and turn to Him, while He still grants you breath to do. The day His incarnation is marked would be a wonderful day for that. But understand that for you, just like for Hitchens, if you continue to refuse, you will face Christ's eternal judgment. Know that. Repent!
