I learned to drive ours (2-ton dump) at 12 y/o. I had to scoot down to get the clutch pedal pushed in, put it in granny and just let the clutch out- you couldn’t stall it in first. Head down the dirt road feeling like a king! I’d pull it out of gear and stand on the brake with both feet to stop! Ours had the floor starter, too. I still remember that smell and sounds....

Kool truck , almost as old as I am. We had a short bed 56 Chevy , I loved that old girl as a kid , we worked on her after getting it around 1965. New brakes , master cylinder wheel cylinders the whole nine yes. She was used hard by us for a few yrs moving sand , shoveled must have moved 20 tons in total trips and small bed. Wish my pop had saved her for me but she was wanted by another. Really enjoy your vids a lot , thanks

I'm here from the future to comment. I somehow missed this video until I watched the Unit 614 Crane Repairs part 5. (3-30-21) That's a fantastic truck! That 235 won't do anything for you in a hurry, but it will do it for you reliably for a long darn time., I'm a bit jealous. I know what you mean about the brakes on older MD trucks. I've got a 73 F-600 dump that's the same way. The brakes are great, then after sitting over winter there's nothing, right to the floor. Bleeding the master cylinder down at the Hydroboost unit, one pump brings the whole system right back to life. No idea why.

Just like one of the trucks we had on the farm when I was a kid. We had a Chevy dualie and a Studebacker truck, both from long ago. I don't remember the years, but both were good trucks. I learned to drive at age 12 on the Studebaker. I drove a 1956 VW to school in the 70's, having fun at full service stations telling the gas jockey to be sure to check the coolant !

I can see a boom crane mounted next to the cab, and cable winches front and rear. It’s old stuff like this that makes your channel great. I can’t tell you how much I like your channel just for old cars trucks and equipment. There have been plenty of times I wished I was your neighbor just so I could come over and see what was old parked in your driveway. 👍👍

I'm guessing it might be a 261. I have saved 3 Studebaker medium trucks. 1 1/2 ton, 2 ton and a rare 3 ton. These workhorses of America have been overlooked by restorers. I'm surprised it doesn't have the Timken-Detroit vacuum operated 2 speed rear axle. Keep up the great work saving old American iron.

With your antique cars and other machinery this truck is the ideal truck to have around, its past life as a fire truck then having a previous owner who kept it is good shape you have something that you should be able to use without spending all your time from other project and being able to use.

Jonathan, back in the late 50s on the farm in Illinois, we had a 57 Chevy Grain Truck with that exact Grey metal interior, no radio, when you opened the ashtray i looked for a stick of gum. My Dad did not smoke so he would put sticks of gum in the ashtray. He also would wind a bit of bailing wire around the base the gear shift so he always had some in the truck if something needed fixing It had a 4 speed with the 1st gear we called Granny Grunt was to help launch a heavy load of grain from a dirt field. Once out on the hard road you would shift up as you head the elevator. We had stock racks we could fold up and and haul a free cattle or pigs. I drove that truck from the time i was 12 or 14 really young. Mostly fixing fix then later haul the grain. Yes 236 In LIne Six but it had the gears that allowed it to haul everything we needed. Early on Dad would let me hold the button to lift the dump when we went to the elevator. Later i did it all by myself. I miss those days and my Dad. Seeing this truck and you starting it brought back so many wonderful memories. Take Care, Dennis in Virginia

That engine could be a 261. Look at the engine block right above there where the starter bolts on. If there are two vertical casting marks roughly an inch long and about an inch apart, you have a 261. Same stroke as a 235, siamesed cylinders for larger bore. Another tell tale sign is what appears to be a full flow oil filter, judging by the large lines going to the oil filter.. Good old truck for sure!

I gota 59 Viking and love it! I use it all the time, geared so you can drag around Egyptian Pyramids around even with your 235, my has a 283 in it and has so much torque that even with several tons on the bed you can let out the clutch at idle and it wont stall.

Now that is a cool old truck for sure! I am not a big fan of the "patina" look most if the time, but I think it works very well on this truck. Looks like the engine bay is mostly original stuff, minus the voltage regulator as Jonathan pointed out. But those battery cables look original. The oil pressure gauges looks original as well. And that radiator hose! Looks like its barely holding on.
