Fireball was always my favorite driver. Hated to wear firesuit and hated fires, interesting that is the way he went, but his love of racing is the way he went. RIP Fireball. I am 77 and will always remember you.

Fireball was allergic to the fire-proofing chemicals used back then. He had a medical waiver because of his extreme allergic reaction to the liquid solution used. He was our hometown hero and we Daytonans will NEVER forget Edward Glen Roberts, our beloved driver…..

I first heard of this specific race in an old book about the best NASCAR drivers. It talked about Fireball Robert's 1958 domination and how Eddie Pagan went flying out of the track. Cool to see this race in color.

This was a time when Stock Cars really looked like the cars you drove on the streets, not like today's Stock Cars. People could relate to the cars much better than today, despite the fantastic increases in speed.

I passed by the track in 1974 and didn’t realize it until I looked to my left and I was right behind some stands. And those beauty queens still put today’s to shame, they are real. Could you what would happen if they put the flag of the south in the race show!

NASCAR Cup cars stopped being stock in 1967. The transition from dirt tracks to long paved speedways demanded higher speeds and higher safety standards, and strictly stock cars could not do the job anymore. Still, it would be cool if the bodies were still stock looking, but the arrival of the Gen 4 in 1992 brought an end to that for marketing reasons.

I can't even imagine driving one of these cars for 500 miles at 115 miles per hour. I own a stock '56 Buick and I am not comfortable driving it much over 65 although it will do it. These guys are driving with basically a helmet, and a rudimentary roll cage. They are wearing shirts pants, and leather shoes. No real restraints of any kind but a lap belt.

Don't mind the missing guard rail...just keep racing! If the walls or fense didn't hold up under a crash today they stop the race until fixed! These were some brave men back then unlike today...lol

This is awesome- a parade with clowns, a guy shooting a rifle, Confederate battle flag. Then a beauty pageant with James Arness judging, tobacco companies as sponsors, cars flying all over the place, starting on fire, flipping over... why did those 1950’s cars roll over so easily?

A very high center of gravity and almost no drag or downforce on the body to keep it on the ground they are going so fast. They handled like bags of meat...and no power steering Awesome Bill from Dawsonville 35 years later more than doubled the speed of over 200 miles an hour. That track looks like it has bad pitted acne

@@feellucky271what a nonsense. "High Center of gravity". Way better than todays cars. Back then, the engine was placed low behind the front axle. I race one of those on German streets, yes modded, but basically stock, since 1988 til today. I still smoke about any regular pass car on the road.

I remember when Fireball Roberts was killed. Me and my dads favorite driver. I had the pictures in my scrapbook. When he died Nascar came to a halt until new safety equipment could be created and utilized. The cars of that year were the last of the STOCK cars. They became race cars after his death. Greatest advance was the implementation of the fuel cell. If I remember correctly the first race at AIR was in 1960. Were the Atlanta International Raceway paint schemes and coveralls just advertisement for the upcoming track? Please reply if anyone knows.
