I have this same exact motor. I just rebuilt the carb and took the sob apart 10+ times to get all the kinks out of it. It ran at first but was leaking gas from the carb. I had to replace the cork packing washers with O - Rings with the same Inside Diameter as the cork washers.

Ive never had any luck using those ignition modules on ANY multi cylinder engine. They work great for all single cylinder 2 and 4 cycle lawn equipment like mowers and backpack blowers, and weed wackers for which they were originally intended, but really no one I know EVER had any luck using them on multi cylinder applications, and your video just backs up my comment..

Hello Brandon , great videos by the way and a nice motor those 58 Johnsons. I have quite a few here in my collection. Why ever use solid state in the first place .Im an old school outboard mechanic guy points are fantastic and with good condensers last years wont pit.They have been using them in cars and boatmotors,lawnmowers,etc for decades before CD ,SolidState came out.You can polish them dissasembled every few years with a right angle Dotco air motor and a blue (fine) 3-m scotchbrite spin on disc takes 10-15 minutes to do. I have been doing it for years.If I had to buy new points for all my motors or solid state chips the last ten years or so I would be broke now,LOL. Im a firm believer in leaving things alone unless that choice is not possible and your customer is holding a gun to your head to do it,LOL. I just would never warranty any solidstate upgrade on a motor I sold or repaired. Thats just my own opinion of course ,Glenn P. in N.Y.
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Well good sir, I believe your opinion is correct. I should have left what works alone. I wanted to experiment a bit, show the world A) how to install and B) If they work, and how long they last. I thought for sure they would have lasted at least long enough to get the boat on the water, was I ever wrong on that one.

I've not had much luck with the nova II style ignition modules but I do have one that's ran for years on an old johnson 2hp motor with the module mounted underneath the stator plate for easier access just in case it ever dies or for troubleshooting. Supposedly the modules with the single connector like the ones made to replace the Kawasaki part 21119-2095 made by rotary work great with the OMC coils. I've heard that some of the cheaper modules can be damaged or overheat at higher rpms as the coil voltage increases so its been advised to add a decent length to the wire coming from the coil to the module to induce a bit of a voltage drop across the wiring. I recently purchased a couple of the Kawasaki style modules to experiment with on an old 35hp evinrude that has a bit of a wobble on the stator plate.

I have done electronic conversions on various motorcycles and I could not see how that one worked. They look like hall effect ICs but they could not be positioned close enough to the pints cam to trigger reliably. Without a specific kit for the application they were unlikley to be any good. also, the primary and secondary voltages are much higher than with points, so they blow oild coils desgined for points. Given that you are not going to use the engine that much I think you are better off with points.

Is there a device you can hook up to the motor and it will tell you what are the problem areas. I don't know where to begin. Just bought a gasket to replace the very old one and it still won't run.

I know that amount of smoke is normal, but what if the water barrel has a lot of black sludge on top? What could be the cause? I was test run a 61' 10hp Evinrude on 24:1 mixture. Thanks.

Great video Brandon, again as usual! The solid state stuff usually works or doesn't work right out of the box IMHO. It's interesting that you lost 1 cylinder and then both stopped delivering spark. I would conclude the coils just couldn't keep pace with the load on them and they ultimately died. I've had coils a few years old that worked fine at startup and died shortly after warming up. Resistance was zero at that point. It is bizarre that both coils failed on the initial startup run though, I'll be interested to see what you determine as the cause in the next video. Thanx for sharing your adventures with the older vintage motors. I have several and have worked on outboards for years, living on a lake, it's great for business. Work safe and enjoy your weekend, see ya on the next 1 Doug@ the "ranch"

Its odd, seems like just at the 4 minuet mark in the video you see an increase in smoke; I believe that is when the bottom cylinder died.
@lakesideranch5 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage I would agree, can you make a professional call that your motor suffered from solid state infant mortality? Seems like the ignition system was A-Okay at initial startup, and suddenly dropped that cylinder and subsequently lost all spark when the second module failed or coils just gave up the ghost. Never saw 2 coils fail on the same engine at the same relative time. I know you stated they were from other running engines, but strange they both failed on your motor... Thanx for the reply here, I enjoy all your productions and have much respect for your video and editing expertise. Keep up the great work! Enjoy your weekend with your family! All the best from here. @@ragman2323 ok well there isn't many cause for the leak. By manifold I'm assuming your meaning exhaust housing, make sure your bolts are tightened down and your not missing any. If you have a gasket, between the block and the housing, check the gasket.
